View Full Version : Cabin Fever: And I, one of the few who didn't like it.

Ever since I saw it in theatres a few years ago, I never really talked about how I felt about it with anyone. Until now. I gotta admit, CF is one of the few movies i've seen that really kicked ass throughout, but just completely disappointed me in the end.
I still remember it kinda vividly; *

Rider Strong's character is being shipped through the hospital, they look him over, decide there's nothing they can do for him, then they ship his ass out into a truck I think, and dump his sorry ass near some creek. But he isn't dead, at least he doesn't look that way...then of course, that one Ken doll-lookin motherfucker got smoked by the sheriffs the second he came out of hiding, and...that was the end. THAT WAS THE END?!
Somebody please tell me there was something I missed or there was more to the story cause, otherwise, this baby gets the same score it got from me two years back: 5/10. Or rather, 2 ARROWS IN THE HEAD. No disrespect to The Arrow...

I admired the grotesque gore as well as the killer concept and some of the acting was pretty strong indeed *Bert pissed me off, but no doubt that was the aim*. But I find that the film itself was overrated and not all it made itself out to be in terms to the hype that surrounded it.

I actually really liked this movie. I liked the ending and its only an hour and a half so that's a good thing (mainly cause that qualifies it as a quicky which I can watch any time I feel like seeing rotting flesh)

i was looking forward to seeing Cabin Fever after all the good things i heard but it ended up being a pile of shit, the acting (aside from the main character) was crappy, the direction was poor, the plot went from bad to worse and as for the gore effects, they were decent at best

i'd actually say your in the majority, not in the few....everybody and their mothers seems to hate on Cabin Fever and better yet Eli Roth.
The dudes so fresh and new, give him some time to grow.
Cabin Fever was no classic by any means, but it was very solid in my views, and strayed away from the stupid Grudge & Ring rip-offs and such.
Hostel, well,go see it this weekend and see for yourself.I fuckin' loved it.

I for one quite liked the "Ring" remake, though the Americanised "Grudge" missed the scares and the atmosphere dramatically.

There have been a very similar threads about this movie in the past. So, I'll re-post the gist of my last comments.
Did I like the movie? Yes and no. I definitely think it's quite overrated though. The "don't drink the water" concept is highly unoriginal, despite some speculation that it was unique. Also, some of the dialogue was not only poorly written, but in poor taste. Example:
Jeff: Why would you want to kill squirrels?
Bert: 'Cause they're gay.
Jeff: Bert, don't be a fucking retard.
And another:
Paul: So, you like me now? Is this like a date?
Karen: Don't be gay.
I'm sure I'm going to be bombarded with posts by people who think I'm overreacting, but yes, I do take offense to that kind of thing. Not only is it completely inappropriate, but it's just wrong and as a writer/director, Eli Roth should show a little more respect and a little more tolerance. After all, it's the 21st century, for fuck's sake. I was so pumped up for Hostel for months, but after reading that this script shows even less tolerance for gays, I'm a little leary. But yes, I'm going to see it anyway and only then will I have the ability to make a proper judgement.

I'm not going to say you're overreacting, and calling it poorly written is your prerogative (and not that I disagree or anything, I wasn't a HUGE fan of this flick), but I think you're looking at it from the wrong perspective. It's not that Eli is intolerant or homophobic, he's just relaying dialogue that he's heard in real life (I'm assuming). After all, how many times in your recent memory have you heard college kids (and younger people in general) call something "gay" off the cuff with their limited vocabulary? That point has probably been brought up before, but it's more a reflection of ignorant assholes around us in our society than Eli's own views.
But hey, I can't speak for Eli, so I'll leave it at that.

I give it a 2/10 because it had some nice gore moments and a couple of good looking woman but other than that the movie flat out sucked.

I pretty much hated Cabin Fever. There are many scenes which where obviously taken from other much better films. The characters where all stupid, especially the obnoxious guy (Bert?) . The "stoner cop" was so annoying he alone made me give this a low rating.
Eli Roths interviews he did before the film came out where also lame. I remember him saying stuff about how hardcore this movie is gonna be and how people sre gonna be sick over some scenes. I didnt think it was hardcore or sickening.
I am gonna skip HOSTEL. Maybe I'll catch it on DVD.

Well, thank you for speaking your mind in a mature, adult fashion and for not jumping down my throat. I was sure I would've been beset with comments telling me to get a life and to stop overreacting.
Well, just came back from Hostel a little while ago and sadly, the dialogue is even more homophobic and ignorant than that of its predocessor. Words like "fag" or "queer" and choice phrases like "that is so gay" are all thrown around with such ease and in abundance. I came quite close to walking out of the theater. It's definite proof that Roth should learn to put a little more tolerance into his writing. I understand that the lead characters are young, heteosexual males, but it's possible to have their personalities showcased in a less offensive manner.

I want a horror movie that doesn't have hateful terms and phrases spewn every 5 minutes. Asking for a horror movie that doesn't contain the word "faggot," or the phrase "that is so gay" is really not all that much.

I agree though. There's really no need for "gay", "fag", "queer", "retard" etc. Cursing is alright in that most of the time it enhances the frustration and anger of a character...but the derogatory words are not necessary. I'll take "fuck" over "fag" anyday...unless fuckers out in the world are offended. :D

Tarantino has the n-word in Pulp Fiction and Reservoir Dogs and they actually help the dialogue.

I wouldn't say help, dudeman, but uh, I aint gonna deny that it enhances it to an extint.
Oh yeah, and I just got back from seeing Hostel, and honestly, not since the first Saw (2004, 9/10) have I felt like..."fuck sunshine and dinner, I'm camping out in this fucking theatre for the entire weekend, cause I gotta see this shit again and again!" it was so good.
I had a lot of reservations about Jay Hernandez before the film just cause...for some reason I don't really like him, but, the kid did AIGHT in this. Roth still needs to sharpen the dialogue and his transitions from scene to scene- especially in the first half of the movie- could move along a little bit gradually, but I'm beginning to think that's more his style and it might not change.
But overall, I loved it. The gore factor was through the fucking roof, the T&A was all over the place (for some reason I have a craving for European porn now), the main characters I actually gave a shit about and for some reason when I did leave the movie I found myself quoting Takashi Miike's lines from his cameo: "You go in there, you will spend...all your money!". And I actually did use my last 7 bucks for today on this movie!
This baby gets a 8/10 from me. Or, if you will, 3 ARROWS IN DA MUTHA FUCKIN HEAD!

Hell, I want a horror movie where they don't kill off the Black comic relief sidekick or the intelligent fat guy in the first half-hour, but, we can't win them all.
J/K, but I see where you're coming from.

This could just be where i'm around at in Philly, but alot of the dialouge in Hostel for me was realistic and made it that much better. Alot of kids in that age range won't talk in classy, degree style writers dialouge, they'll talk like alot of teens do in general.
Bluntly stated, i'd say roughly 50/50 of the kids I know ALWAYS use that type of wording and dialouge (the whole "dont be a fag" type of thing). I'm not bashing at all,but that is a big way of talking around my area for sure,so for me personally,it honestly just threw a better vibe into the mix as it seemed to be in touch with how real people are talking.

Well, you're in luck. That sums up about every other horror movie created.
I felt that the dialogue fit, because it seemed like something that the obnoxious character would say, much like college kids that happen to be obnoxious and in their own little world seem to do in this day and age.

weird thread title, IMO, cause, I've noticed that there are not very many people who liked the film. Negative opinions seem to overweigh the positive ones usually on Cabin Fever threads.

The hate for this movie comes from the boasting Eli Roth made in 2003. He proclaimed "Wrong Turn," from earlier that year, to be a weak throwback to `70's and `80's horror and went to say that "Cabin Fever" would be the all-time throwback to the the time period.
Yes, that was his opinion, he had the right to say how he felt, but his movie couldn't have been more mis-marketted and overhyped. The previews made it look creepy and scary as hell. But, it wasn't scary at all in any way. The acting was fine, it had a dread-filled atmosphere and it has some unexpected gory quotients here and there...but It was also terribly written and dread-filled atmosphere was ruined by "funny" comic relief characters that were better off in another movie. The director played in cameo himself as one of the "funny" comic relief characters, a stoner! The director literally ruined his own movie by himself!
It's not that that I don't have a sense of humor, it's that this movie was better off as a straight-forward scary movie instead of scary-and-"funny" horror movie, that was it's fatal downfall.
"Wrong Turn" was consistenly on the ball and never letting up it's fun, creepiness, surprising kill/gore effects here and there and chases. It played it straight-forward and was most effective that way. It may not have been the most original backwoods slasher movie, but the filmmakers put it in the effort.
"Cabin Fever" was the opposite of that and was a joke, and not a "funny" one either. If they had stuck to the dread-filled atmosphere and kept it on the ball, it could have been much better. The actor's talents were wasted. That is why "Cabin Fever" is so hated. It promised to be something, but turned out to be something completely different. Eli Roth screwed with the audience and it was his fault.
But, I don't hate Eli Roth. I gave "Hostel" a fair chance and enjoyed it. It wasn't that much of a "gore/torture" movie as the previews promised, but it turned out to be a better suspenseful movie than the all-out gore/torture movie it could have wound stinking up as. But, I still question his nerve and arrogance over the matter of "Cabin Fever > Wrong Turn."

Not gonna argue that, but then again no film can be very good if it's not done by me. In comparison to other films already out there, I'd say I quite liked it.
