NOT HAPPY!!! And yet sort of happy. Im pissed that now the dvds i have are basicly turning into my old Vhs, i have over 400 dvds. i dont want to play the upgrade game. why do they do this to us? But im excited because its new and looks somewhat cool. what does anyone else think? anyone double dipping or just saying fuck it and buying all future ones in Blueray like me?

I'm pretty sure that Blu ray and HD-DVD (which ever wins the format war) will be compatible with DVDs. It would be retarded not to be.

I just have this nagging feeling that no matter how retarted it would be, companies wouldn't really care if it weren't:p

I'm curious. How exactly does someone think BR will "invalidate" their cureent DVD collection and turn it into "VHS?"
My collection isnt going anywhere. Just cause something new comes out isnt gonna change the clarity I get in my current dvds, BR IS NOT gonna be the WOW factor that DVD was to VHS. Its gonna be slightly better than negligible and mostly is gonna hold much more content and eliminate that slight pause in layer change.
My current tv isnt gonna dissapear..my current DVD player isnt gonna evaporate, so I dont get the, "my collection is gonna be null and void" argument. THAT can only happen if someone has the, "must have everything new and current and latest" outlook regarding technology.
This is NOTHING like the NEED we all had in changing over from VHS to dvd...hell yeah..THAT was needed. DVD to BR dvd? Nope...
Sure I will more than likely go BR with current and upcoming flicks, but I have ZERO intention on upgrading the thousand I already own. Heck, even if I did, it would be like maybe 10 or so scifi/fantasy ones...mostly BR is gonna be good for TV on dvd eliminating the need for so many dvds. LOTR TRILOGY will probaby fit on 3 discs TOTAL...Movies AND supplements.

You just proved the point by saying a lot of the things people said when DVD was first coming out:p Just replace DVD with VHS and Blueray with DVD.

I dont think so.
No biggie if I am wrong, but I dont see a major visual difference occuring with BR like dvd did to VHS. I am well aware of the difference in resolution numbers but so far, I havent even been wowed by seeing HDTV playing dvds vs reg tv with a component hookup when 2 movies are played side by side.

Well Said Joshmo. My collection is my collection. I can add on to it with blueray if i want. either way my collection isnt going anywhere! and hey VHS SUCK they dont compare to the whole vhs to dvd change. Well Well Said. But still they piss me off! first the make special special editions of movies i already own and now they make better quality movies with more special features movies that i already own! its a battle i will never win. so whats one to do....Be happy with what you have. :D

The Blu-Ray and HD-DVD players are completely backwards compatible with DVD so you don't have to replace your collection at all. Just buy the new movies on Blu-Ray or the other. There are over 12,000 movies coming out on DVD this year alone so it will take a long time for DVD to just disappear.
