Whats the best way to burn dvds, such as best recorders, etc. ? Is it better to use a dvd recorder or dvd burner and also what are the best discs to use? I used to record dvds with a dvd recorder, but I couldnt get the special features and chapters on the disc. I'm new to dvd recording and dont know much about it so if someone could help I'd appreciate it.

No. 1. Downloading and burning DVDs is illegal.
No. 2. I think the law has changed and you can no longer legally make backups of your own DVD discs.
No. 3. I find CloneDVD the best to rip them, then use Nero to burn the resulting ISO.

Phillips DVD+R's have been the most efficient and affordable to use.

I always hear that, rip with CloneDVD and burn with Nero. What's the purpose of burning with Nero? What are the advantages? I use CloneDVD to do both and get really good results. Even with large ISO files, I usually get really great quality, comparable to the real dvd.
Also, I've used many different brands of discs and I've found that Fugi DVD+R work pretty well and are easy on the wallet. Another program that works really well is AnyDVD. It helps go around all the encryption software and takes out all the previews and auto-start software on your DVD. This software doesn't rip or burn, it just works in conjunction with your rip/burn software to help create clean ISO's. Works well with CloneDVD. You get a 21 day free trial so there's nothing to lose. Here's a link: http://www.slysoft.com/en/

AnyDVD is a must. An absolute blessing. I use it to region-free my R1 discs, so I can make backups to watch in the bedroom as the TV/DVD combi unit in there isn't multi-region.
As far as using NERO instead of CloneDVD to burn...I just like NERO :D
CloneDVD's burning part seems a bit "faceless" to me...it just gets on with things. With NERO, I like to know that I'm in control of burning speed etc, so I prefer it.
Personally, I use nothing but Datawrite DVD-R discs. Cheap as chips here in the UK from www.blankdiscshop.co.uk. I used to use the Datawrite full-face printable white discs, but the last batch I got were less than impressive (about 50% failures when burning), mind you that's about 25 out of over 200 of them I've used. I've since bought a batch of the Datawrite Yellows and they've been going swimmingly.
I also recently used a bunch of TDK DVD+R DL discs to burn some movies I really wanted the extras etc for. 2.4x certified discs, and I burned them flawlessly at 8x using a Sony DRU-810A. Impressive to say the least.

I can't speak for any software other than X Copy Platnium, but with Nero you don't have any fifteen second "DVD BACKUP" warning screens when you push play.
Oh, and I use decrypter, shrink, and then nero.

Thanks Everybody. I think i'm gonna go with CloneDvd and Anydvd. Do these have the dvd backup warning?

Nope, they don't
Good thing with CloneDVD is that you can actually rip out unwanted extras, screens (such as FBI warning etc) and audio tracks to clear up space. It also automatically compresses the remaining video to fit on whatever size DVD you specify. The compression rate is excellent...I burned one disc at 47% its normal size (53% compression) and could hardly notice the difference. The picture looked a bit softer but overall is well within acceptable boudaries for what it had achieved. You'll have good results with your chosen software, raging_bull. :D

It all depends on what kind of player you have. Some players have trouble reading DVDR's. Also, try to streamline the disc as possible. Try to leave only the essential features. CloneDVD is pretty good for taking out all the stuff you don't want. Sometimes when you cram a lot of data on a disc, the player has trouble reading it. I don't know why or how, but it's been my experience.
Also, what kind of media are you using. Try using a different kind of media. I have 3 players. A Toshiba about 4 years old, Sony DVD/VCR combo about 2 years old and a cheap GOVIDEO DVD/VCR combo. And I've used 2 kinds of discs, HP DVD+R and Fugi DVD+R. The HP's work on the GOVIDEO and the Toshiba. And the Fugi's work on the Toshiba only. My Sony, which was my most expensive machine is fucking worthless. It sometimes won't even play store bought DVD's. My Toshiba on the other hand will play anything I throw at it. It is the best!
Also, did you use AnyDVD to decrypt? Did you make an ISO or those TS Video files. I don't really know the technical aspects but try a combination of things. I remember when I first started to burn, I couldn't figure out how to do it. And I hated wasting discs. But once I found a program that would burn well and discs that would work on my player it is really worth it.
I wish I could be of more help. I really don't know much about troubleshooting for CloneDVD since I've never really had any problems with that program. I just pop in the disc and make sure that AnyDVD is running properly. Then I open CloneDVD and click on the clone DVD, not copy DVD. Then select the DVD I want to clone and select the features I want to keep. Then I take out all the audio I want to take out and click next. I click the "make ISO" file and name it. Then click "go." After the disc is ripped. Go back to the start screen, pop in your blank disc and click "write existing data." Select the ISO you want to burn (although it should already be selected for you). Click go and it should burn ok. Try not to use your computer when burning. I usually don't and I get better results. Hope this helps.
Peace...

eljefe15 has basically said it right.
Go through CloneDVD to the point where it says "ISO/UDF creation successful", then just close it down.
At this point open NERO, choose "Burn Image to Disc", and point it to the ISO file that CloneDVD has created.
Try burning at 1x using NERO for best compatibility. If that doesn't work, try using different media than the ones you currently are. If STILL not successful, get yourself a new DVD player. As has been stated before, Toshiba appear to be the best for reading R/RW discs. I use a Toshiba SD330E and it's never refused to read anything but bad media.
Of the mainstream discs, I'd probably try TDK or Verbatim. Datawrite are some of the best quality/cost balanced discs you can buy, but if you're in the US I'm not sure of availability over there.
