The series in its entirety is 12 hours long, so, make time :P
Not trying to give anything away, but be warned, take the ending with an open mind. Some people curse the series soley becuase of the ending, but don't realize that there is an entire manga series that takes place after the show, and is still running strong.
But yeah, I have absolutely nothing bad to say about the show, its still today one of my favorite anime series ever produced. Great story, excellent character development, and outdated, but still very effective animation.
Just wait till you meet Zod.
BEST. CHARACTER. EVER.

Whole problem with the ending is that when they started writing out the shows, the series was expected to run much, much, much longer. But then they were forced to wrap it up, and that's why so much crazy shit happened at once then it was over, I would love to see them one day continue that series..... the manga is amazing and I would love to see it as an anime.

I agree with SinisterMinistr ( and reading all his post explained some stuff to me ) , the end is pretty shitty ( well 90% of the serie is medieval gory stuff then it's all the way supernatural explanation for the last 10% ). Feels like we are missing 5-6 episodes at least.

I personally haven't seen it, but I've heard the Manga helps explain the shotty, tacked on ending of the anime series.
Sadly, disc one is always checked out when I'm at my local video rental store - 'tis the only reason I haven't watched it yet. :(

if you don't read the manga, it's not like you won't know what happens. The supernatural parts aren't difficult to understand, they just feel out of place. That said, the show covers a very, very small portion of the manga, so don't expect anything conclusive

Berserk is hands down one of my favorite anime series...If I had a digital camera I would show you the tattoo I have of the "Brand of Sacrifice " on my right wrist..My first encounter with Berserk was actually from a friend who imported the Dreamcast game from Japan (the US version was Sword of the Berserk) and it was pretty much love at first site..The only other show I like as much is Cowboy Bebop

If you want to continue the anime, so to speak, in a more animated venture you can check out the first video game which gives you a nice taste of what happens next. I'd recommend the second game as well, since it covers a lot of ground... up to vol. 27 of the manga, I think, but alas you'd have to import it. C'est la vie.
5 yrs ago I madly deeply fell in Love with this brutal yet compelling story anime entitled "Berserk" which was an outcome after playing a Sega Dreamcast game.
Here is the Limited Edition Boxset called Box Of War which even as of present it goes around a cost $80 above

Fast Forward to 2009 - Media Blasters released this promotional "Video Comparison" footage of the upcoming Berserk re-release called Berserk-Remastered:
Media Blasters' Berserk Remastered Video Comparison (http://www.media-blasters.com/berserk/trailer/berserkcomp.mov)
I was captivated with the upgrade they did both in Audio and Video.
With no hesistation upon its release, I immediately grab it - I was amazed that they even made used of Scanovo's Overlap packaging to store 6discs in one amaray case (though Im a bit sad they would have gone further if they made use of steelbook) but nevertheless it was an awesome re-release.

i'm giving it another shot. on ep 4 at mo. the only thing i really dislike is the music, sounds like enya, it's weak! the rest, although fantasy aint really my thing i'm starting to dig

haha yeah, the music is horrendous. No other way to say it.
Anyway, I haven't watched Berserk in a few years, but I wanna say the magic number is 10. Once you get past 10, the show goes beyond "stereotypical dark fantasy" to something really epic. The characters begin to get fleshed out. Guts is really one of the deeper characters you'll encounter in anime, but it takes a while for him be more than just a big, brooding beast. Griffith's ascension and motives become clearer and start to make waves throughout the kingdom. It starts to pick up around 7, but 10 is where the Griffith/Guts relationship takes an absolutely epic turn that shapes the rest of the series and makes it the masterpiece that it is. If you can get beyond that, you're in for a treat. But a lot of people don't make it that far because the first few episodes aren't anything special, so the hype around Berserk (most people start watching it because of high expectations caused by word of mouth) disappoint and they quit.

I love the music in Berserk. Like, LOVE it. I love everything Susumu Hirasawa does (including Paranoia Agent, Paprika, etc.). His stuff is integral to everything it's featured in, as far as I'm concerned. It just makes it all stranger and more creepy.
And the manga's really what it's all about. That's where the real greatness and craziness of Berserk lies. The anime is good, but it feels so minor once you read the whole series.

They're both great, but the weird thing about the manga vs. anime is the main characters. In the anime, I thought Griffith was profoundly more interesting than Guts. Even though Guts developed nicely and is a great character in his own right, it was really Griffith that drove the story forward. His actions and reactions are what we wanted to see. Guts is so much more significant and deeper in the manga.

There's always been rumors and talk of a second season, but as of yet it hasn't come to fruition. Personally I doubt it will any time soon.
There are a few games that follow the manga's story past what's covered in the anime, but the only one available in the US is the one for Dreamcast. I've always wanted the one for PS2 since it looks amazingly cool and goes way past where the anime ended, but alas, it's only in Japan (as far as I know).

Yeah in my opinion, that's when it takes off. When the Griffith/Guts dynamic completely switches. It goes beyond standard dark fantasy and dives into some very interesting character interactions and philosophies
Wasn't there word they were gonna continue the series with another anime run?
I think it's more wishful thinking and probably won't happen. It's possible that once the manga is actually over, they'll revisit it in anime form (similar to what they're doing with Inuyasha, which will start back up in September). Unfortunately, with all the breaks Miura takes, the manga will probably never finish.

it's definitely more character driven now. i really enjoyed caska's story and the ep when guts takes out 100 was wicked also

Nah, I have the first book of the manga and the art-style is completely different.
I love that shot of Guts resting against the tree with his sword, dead bodies everywhere.
