Hey you guys I r ealize that there is a lready a Criterion thread but this is more of your favorite Criterion thread. I have just gotten into it and now own The Man Who fell To Earth, Charade, Straw Dogs, and the Wages of Fear.
Whats your favorite Criterion DVDs. this not only means the movie but the extras that go with it.

I loved The Rock Criterion, especially the nifty features like the featurette on firing arms in movies that actually had a specialist talking about it and the realistic stances used in the film instead of the normal "hold it how it feels good" usually done in actions films. And of course the movie is one of my favorites ever.
The only other Criterion I really, really remember was Chasing Amy and I thought as far as the extras went, for a Criterion, it was really lacking.
I have a feeling if they put out that Gojira (Godzilla, 1954) Criterion that might end up being my favorite.
In The Mood For Love. The apex in terms of every aspect of DVD, technical, extras, and film.

Well my favorite movie is Ivan the Terrible, Part One and its released by Criterion so I might have to go with that. I've never seen the Criterion version though so I have no idea how good it is or whats on it. I actually just ordered Eisenstein The Sound Years and I cant wait till it gets here. 4 of my 5 favorite films are on Criterion actually.
The Antoine Doinel boxset is amazing as well as the 2 disc of M. Has anyone seen Criterions Ivan the Terrible or the Eisenstein Collection? If so how is it, I'm very anxious to see it. I was actually told by one of my professors that I'm gonna like Part Two more. I might be switching my changing my favorite movie shortly if thats the case.

The picture is below their usual fare, and that extra on the second disc about Ivan's secret message is utterly idiculous, and you'll be dissapointed to learn only Alexander Nevsky has a commentary. That being said, the disc is a true sign of the great things to come from criterion in the future. The extras are great (including a re-construction of an unfinished Eisenstein movie) and some great essays.
As for me, my personal opinion is that Ivan The Terrible Part I was better than Part II, although it must be said I didn't really watch them in optimal settings (I was on a train to Paris when I caught Part II and had to watch under it under some sheets as to not disturb the others in my cell). The climax was awesome however. However to me both films pale in comparison to the awsome Alexander Nevsky, which I hope will rock your socks off. Anyhow this set will be a wise purchase.

YOU ALL ENVY ME NOW!!!!
I'm kind of Russian (more American than Russian but still) so I fluently understand Russian and I get to watch the films without subtitles...
I agree though, I first saw Nevsky when I was 14 and I really dug it back then...especially the music. And now that I've seen all three, I still think Nevsky is better, but second place goes to Ivan Grozny I.
I haven't checked out the Criterion dvds yet, and it'll be a while before I do but I am intrigued.
Now...if only Criterion would release Battleship Potemkin on dvd, then I'd be one happy camper.
