The BAFTA award nominations were announced in London this morning, and look ominously like what I imagine the Oscar nominations to look like.

So there we have it. A few surprises (BAFTA do like to keep it all a little "British"), but on the whole I expect Oscars categories to look incredibly similar!

Do the Baftas have a televised award show?

The BAFTA's are normally quite difficult to predict (especially in the supporting performance categories) because they tend to vote for British or semi-British choices, but I'll give it a bash, alongside my own personal choices.

BEST PICTURE
Will win: BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN (Diana Ossana & James Schamus)
Want to win: CRASH (Cathy Schulman, Don Cheadle & Bob Yari)

BAFTA's big award normally adheres to the winner of Oscars and Golden Globes big award. BM's only just opened over here, but all the critics are creaming there pants about it. Personally, I'd prefer CRASH to get this. It was the best film of the summer over here. BM is just feeding off it's own hype and is pretty much unstoppable. I must say I'm surprised to see GN&GL in contention. The McCarthy era was very much a part of American history and didn't really affect British interest.

DAVID LEAN AWARD for BEST ACHIEVEMENT IN DIRECTION
Will win: Fernando Meirelles - THE CONSTANT GARDENER
Want to win: Paul Haggis - CRASH

Best Picture and Director never coincide at the BAFTA's. They always seem to give this to Best Picture's runner-up.

BEST ACTOR
Will win: Philip Seymour Hoffman - CAPOTE
Want to win:Joaquin Phoenix - WALK THE LINE

P S Hoffman has all the critics raging about this performance and he's gonna sweep all the awards for his consistent work over the last decade. Although I'd rather see Joaquin win.

BEST ACTRESS
Will win: Rachel Weisz - THE CONSTANT GARDENER
Want to win:Reese Witherspoon - WALK THE LINE

It'll either be Rachel or Dame Judi here. I'd rather see Rachel win than her Dameness who already has more BAFTA's than everyone else put together. Again, I'd rather Reese win for her excellent portrayal as June Carter Cash.

BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR
Will win: Don Cheadle - CRASH
Want to win: Matt Dillon - CRASH

A tough category, I'm thinking Cheadle will win solely because he's also producer on this picture and they won't let it or him go home empty handed, will they? I was surprised not to see Bob Hoskins here for MHP, in which he case he'd be a likely winner. Nevertheless, I think Matt Dillon will be robbed here. His performance was, IMO, one the years finest and certainly his!

BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS
Will win: Brenda Blethyn - PRIDE & PREJUDICE
Want to win: Catherine Keener - CAPOTE

I'm thinking Brenda Blethyn will win this, otherwise, why would she be here??? Catherine Keener should win. She's the best of an ordinary bunch.

BEST ADAPTED SCREENPLAY
Will win: THE CONSTANT GARDENER - Jeffrey Caine
Want to win: A HISTORY OF VIOLENCE - Josh Olson

It's gonna be tight between Brokeback & TCG in this category. But I'm thinking they'll give it to TCG because it's more "British"

BEST ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY
Will win: GOOD NIGHT AND GOOD LUCK - George Clooney & Grant Heslov
Want to win: CRASH - Paul Haggis & Bobby Moresco

I can't understand why Hotel Rwanda was remembered from early 2005 but Million Dollar Baby has been completely forgotten. George Clooney will win this cos I don't think he'll win Supporting Actor and he's gotta surely win something out of his 4 nominations.

THE ANTHONY ASQUITH AWARD for ACHIEVEMENT IN MUSIC
Will win: BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN - Gustavo Santaolalla
Want to win: WALK THE LINE - T Bone Burnett

A tough category. I don't remember the music from any, and haven't seen Memoirs yet.

BEST CINEMATOGRAPHY
Will win: MARCH OF THE PENGUINS - Laurent Chalet & Jerôme Maison
Want to win: MARCH OF THE PENGUINS - Laurent Chalet & Jerôme Maison

Surprise not to see GN&GL in this category. March Of The Penguins had superb photography, glad it was remembered

BEST COSTUME DESIGN
Will win: MEMOIRS OF A GEISHA - Colleen Atwood
Want to win: THE CHRONICLES OF NARNIA: THE LION, THE WITCH & THE WARDROBE - Isis Mussenden

Memoirs is a lock in both the Production Design and Costume Design categories, although I think TLTW&TW showed more flair and imagination.

BEST EDITING
Will win: GOOD NIGHT & GOOD LUCK - Stephen Mirrione
Want to win: CRASH - Holmes Winborne

This really is a 5-horse race. Anyone could win. I'm just guessin'.

BEST FILM IN A FOREIGN LANGUAGE
Will win: THE BEAT MY HEART SKIPPED (DE BATTRE MON COEUR S'EST ARRÊTÉ) - Pascal Caucheteux; Jacques Audiard
Want to win: KUNG FU HUSTLE - Stephen Chow; Chui Po Chu; Jeff Lau

TBMHS did really well over here and was on the critic's top 10 for months. It's there's to lose. I'd prefer Hustle to win though, it seems more fun.

BEST MAKEUP/HAIR
Will win: MEMOIRS OF A GEISHA - Noriko Watanabe, Kate Biscoe, Lyndell Quiyou & Kelvin R Trahan
Want to win: THE CHRONICLES OF NARNIA: THE LION, THE WITCH AND THE WARDROBE - Howard Berger, Gregory Nicotero & Nikki Gooley

See Costume Design.

BEST PRODUCTION DESIGN
Will win: MEMOIRS OF A GEISHA - John Myhre
Want to win: CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY - Alex McDowell

Production Design was the best thing about C&TCF, but Memoirs is gonna steal this because they always give it to period dramas as opposed to contemporary/fantasy movies.

BEST SOUND
Will win: WALK THE LINE - Paul Massey, D M Hemphill, Peter F Kurland & Donald Sylvester
Want to win: KING KONG - Hammond Peek, Christopher Boyes, Mike Hopkins & Ethan Van der Ryn

Last year, Ray won this category, so it'd be no surprise to see another musical biopic win. King Kong's gonna be completely left out in the rain. BAFTA never rewards self-indulgent epics, remakes or sequels.

BEST SPECIAL VISUAL EFFECTS
Will win: THE CHRONICLES OF NARNIA: THE LION, THE WITCH AND THE WARDROBE - Dean Wright, Bill Westenhofer, Jim Berney & Scott Farrar
Want to win: KING KONG - Joe Letteri, Christian Rivers, Brian Vant Hul & Richard Taylor

BAFTA seem to take budget into account in this category and NEVER give it to the most expensive budgeted movie. Total Recall lost to Honey, I Shrunk The Kids in 1991! Twister beat Independence Day in 1996! Titanic lost to The Fifth Element in 1998! Gladiator lost to The Perfect Storm in 2001! I've got a feeling the animatronics of Narnia are gonna pip Kong in 2006!

ALEXANDER KORDA AWARD for BEST BRITISH FILM
Will win: THE CONSTANT GARDENER - Simon Channing-Williams; Fernando Meirelles; Jeffrey Caine
Want to win: WALLACE & GROMIT: THE CURSE OF THE WERE-RABBIT - Peter Lord & David Sproxton; Nick Park & Steve Box; Mark Burton & Bob Baker

TCG gets a consolation prize for not winning the main award. BAFTA should really introduce an Animated Feature category. I'm surprised VALIANT didn't get into the shortlist here.

CARL FOREMAN AWARD for DIRECTOR, PRODUCER OR WRITER in their first feature film
Will win: Peter Fudakowski (Producer) - TSOTSI
Want to win: Joe Wright (Director) - PRIDE & PREJUDICE

Does anyone really give a toss about this category? Even Carl Foreman couldn't care less! I'm completely guessing!!!

The British Academy Film Awards will be held on Saturday 19 February 2006 at the Odeon Leicester Square in London, it's normally televised live or repeated the next day on BBC1 over here. I'm not too sure if it's televised stateside, but there should certainly be an internet feed.

George Clooney has 4 nominations?? I can't remember a single person getting that many at a major award show ever.

Hes had 2 very critically acclaimed movies come out this year. Overall it's been a great year for him.

I'm pretty sure the BAFTAs are not broadcast in the states at all. Could be wrong.

There are some surprises here.

BEST PICTURE
THE CONSTANT GARDENER (Simon Channing-Williams)

The other four are basically locks for the Oscar Best Pic category, but most were predicting Munich or Walk the Line in the 5th spot. This could change things.

BEST ACTOR
Ralph Fiennes - THE CONSTANT GARDENER

Again the unexpected love for Constant Gardener. Fiennes was not really a contender before for the fifth spot, but that may be different now. Most were predicting Terrence Howard or Russell Crowe in the 5th spot.

BEST ACTRESS
Rachel Weisz - THE CONSTANT GARDENER

Weisz is LEAD actress now? And no Kiera Knightley?

BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR
Don Cheadle - CRASH
George Clooney - GOOD NIGHT AND GOOD LUCK
George Clooney - SYRIANA

Double noms for Clooney despite not much buzz on his GN&GL acting role, and the inclusion of Cheadle instead of Howard for Crash is out of nowhere.

BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS
Brenda Blethyn - PRIDE & PREJUDICE
Thandie Newton - CRASH

Must be their British-ness, but these ladies aren't getting the nods from the other awards shows or the guilds. (Newton is very deserving though.) And no Amy Adams?

BEST CINEMATOGRAPHY
MARCH OF THE PENGUINS - Laurent Chalet & Jerôme Maison
MEMOIRS OF A GEISHA - Dion Beebe

Seriously??

BEST EDITING
MARCH OF THE PENGUINS - Sabine Emiliani

Seriously????

BEST PRODUCTION DESIGN
BATMAN BEGINS - Nathan Crowley

Interesting.

The Constant Gardener - 10 nominations
Memoirs Of A Geisha - 6 nominations

Doesn't Geisha have like the worst reviews of all the Oscar-bait movies this year?

Crash is always my pick for best picture. The only "awards worthy" film I've seen. Not counting Walk the Line.

Warren Beatty & Orson Welles were nominated for 4 Oscars. Beatty actually achieved this feat twice. Welles was nominated for Best Director, Actor, Screenplay and as producer of Citizen Kane. Beatty received nominations in the same categories for Heaven Can Wait & Reds in 1978 & 1981 respectively.

Sound designer Gary Rydstrom also received 4 nominations for Best Sound & Best Sound Effects Editing for Backdraft & Terminator 2: Judgment Day in 1991.

Not a single nomination for Munich? It at least deserves a best director nomination. But I am very happy that FINALLY Fiennes gets a nomination for Best Actor somewhere.

Oh, and Rwanda's a 2004 film, not quite sure why it's nominated for Best Original Screenplay.

Munich isn't released in Britain until early February. Hotel Rwanda was released late in this country last year as well. As was Million Dollar Baby which has been completely ignored!

If you look at the history of the BAFTA's (http://imdb.com/Sections/Awards/BAFTA_Awards/) you'll see that they are notorious for giving awards to films which were released late in the UK.

Didn't get a chance to watch it, but judging from the winners, I would say:

PROS:
-Brokeback Mountain
-Philip Seymour Hoffman
-Jake Gyllenhaal (didn't expect him to win, but glad he did, it was the best supporting male performance I've seen of last year by a distance)
-Reese Witherspoon
-King Kong for Best Visual Effects

CONS:
-Crash winning Best Original Screenplay
-Three awards for Memoirs of a Geisha is a bit much
