That's gotta tell you something, he rarely gives even bad movies that low of a rating.

I really liked "Elephant", and having been a big fan of Nirvana, expected to like "Last Days", but I found it to be a little too slow, it just didn't grab me. I do, however, recommend "Kurt & Courtney".

I loved it, but Van Sant's death trilogy (Gerry, Elephant, Last Days) are a required audience. You love it or hate it. I think it was enchanting, totally non-linear, but wonderfully paced.

Gus Van Sant's experimental films are... well, odd.
GERRY - I was bored too much to care.
ELEPHANT - I was thrilled and completely dazzled.
LAST DAYS - I was bored too much to care.

Just like everyone has already stated, if you're a fan of Van Sant then you'll like it, if not then you wont. I love the Death Trilogy.
Gerry - 9/10
Elephant - 9/10
Last Days - 8/10

Just rented it and will watch it in the next couple of days or so. Despite the fact that I loathe Gus Van Sant, I still wanted to give this a chance and see if I like it better than the other films I've seen of his (most of which were marginally unimpressive):
My Own Private Idaho - 6/10
Good Will Hunting - 6/10
Elephant - 5/10
Psycho - 2/10
Finding Forrester - 5/10
The one exception: To Die For (8/10)

Good Will Hunting - 10/10
The only Van Sant film I've ever seen. But Last Days peaked my interest,

I've liked Gus Van Sant's movies for the mostpart, My own private Idaho, was pretty good, Good Will Hunting was great, the remake of Psycho was cool (I know most don't care for it), and Elephant wasn't bad, although I would have liked a more explanatory ending....now to the point:
I was and still am a big Fan of Nirvana, and let's be honest, even though there is a disclaimer saying it wasn't about Kurt Cobain, that's pure BS, the film Last Days has moments where is looks like something is going to happen, but nothing ever does, I was looking forward to seeing this, and was heavily dissappointed, I am very glad I caught it on Pay Per View, and didn't go out and buy it, because I would hate to have wasted money on this film, it was 98 minutes of boredom, nothing more nothing less.
1/10

ok, i didnt see gerry, but i saw elephant. it wasnt bad, but wasnt good. i was interested by wat was going on, but overall it didnt resonate with me as a good film. now comes last days
boring as all hell, and completely pretentious. i know van sant was trying to"say something" but how bout a li lstory ? just a lil bit? and i know everybody else in the movie are just there to be represented as leeches, but i didnt care. the car scenes? wortless..it was just a horrible horrible film. i gave it zero stars and its my worst film of 2005.

I liked Last Days more than Gerry, but not quite as much as Elephant. Although I can understand why people might despise the last three Van Sant movies (or are simply bored by them), I really like them. On one level, I found it neat to see standard conventions so radically bent. But I also think that the general lack of narrative added conceptually to the movies rather than being simply showy or novel for novelty's sake. (Ie, the minimalism in Last Days helped convey Blake's alienation from everyone/everything around him.)
Oh, and, first post. Hi. :)

Last Days is a crappy ass movie. If you had no idea who Kurt Cobain was, the movie would fall apart. It relies too much on Cobain's image and history to be relevant as a stand alone movie. The whole time, you're thinking, "So this is what Cobain was up to..." But if you judge the film on its own, without the Cobain influence... it's a piece of shit. There's no characters, no story at all, no plot... I mean, really, Van Sant needs to get off his ass and WORK for our attention.
I love minimalism, hell, I'm a big Jarmusch fan, but what Van Sant is doing is just lazy filmmaking. What's a film without conflict? That's the only ingredient a film really needs...

I wouldn't call what Van Sant is doing "lazy filmmaking." If you knew anything about how to film a movie like that, you'd know that its painstakingly tedious.

No harm done if no one likes these movies; Gerry is thrilling, but really, really pretentious.
If I had known who Van Sant was in 2003 and seen "My Own Private Idaho", I would have been happy to see this guy get a second chance to make the movies he wants after "Even Cowgirls Get the Blues" and "Psycho".

Exactly, if you watch the special features on the DVD, you will see how hard it was for them to shoot that very long pull back dolly shot.

Really Katherine? And you knew Kurt personally? Were you a friend of his? For you to make such a statement about the kind of personality/character he had, well certainly you must've known him pretty well...

Any movie is hard to film! Even making a 15 minute short is tough work. Just because they showed us that "long take" that doesn't mean I'm going to praise the hell out of a film that has no characters whatsoever. I hope now i don't get a reply such as, "Well, Van Sant didn't want to have any characters and it's very hard making a movie without a likeable character... blah, blah, blah."
All I'm saying is that the juice wasn't worth the squeeze with this one. If you take out the Cobain influence, the film will fall apart. Think about it. It relies solely on all of our impressons of the guy... We see Michael Pitt look like him and immediately, we go, "Oh, look it's meant to be Kurt!" But if you just took this film as any rock star... it's less credible than even the Doors, which to me is a deranged comedy starring Val Kilmer.

Well for me personally I don't need the influence of Cobain. The film is about death against ones self. As Gerry is about death towards a best freind, and Elephant is about death towards a stranger. Just because Van Sant choose a Cobain figure as a way to show this, it doesnt mean the movie would fall apart if he chose someone else.
