If so, then I will put it at #1 on my best of 2005 list.

It's up for debate between 2004 and 2005.
However, IMDb states the American release date for Oldboy as:
USA 25 March 2005 (Los Angeles, California)
USA 25 March 2005 (limited)
USA 1 April 2005 (Wisconsin Film Festival)
USA January 2005 (Sundance Film Festival)
So yes, it is very legit to call it a 2005 film and place it on your list for the year past. I know it's on mine, more than likely #1, the only real competition being the excelllent King Kong. Oldboy is actually my 19th favorite film.
And it's up for 2005 Golden Schmoe contention...so make sure you vote for it! In every category! ;)

Good, so now I can call Oldboy my favorite film of 2005.

Of course, technically it's from 2003... and some schmoes (including me) saw it in 2004 and added it on their lists from that year.
But as it came out in 2005 in the US, we can consider it a release of that year, thus calling it the year's favorite and nominating it for the afore-mentioned Golden Schmoes.
