On that site there's a petition started to get the studios to release the original 6-hour version of The Thin Red Line. It's a long shot but it might work. You never know.
Sign it! I know there are some major TTRL fans on this site.

Me too. 3 more hours of the movie is almost two good. Storylines with Mickey Rourke and Gary Oldman to a Billy Bob Thorton narration? Why haven't they released it already!?!
I know the chance that a petition like this will work is almost nothing but it would be interesting to see if the petition really took off.

Eh... never second-guess a genius: if Malick wanted to release different versions of the flick, wouldn't he?! Just like he does now with THE NEW WORLD which I heard will be released in versions varying substantially in length, but all of them with the director's approval.
It's like with Kubrick movies... of course I'm curious to see all those deleted scenes of EYES WIDE SHUT shot with Harvey Keitel and Jennifer Jason Leigh in some major roles (Keitel played the Sydney Pollack part, and Leigh, I think, a prostitute or something), and outtakes, and all that fancy stuff, but even after his death the Kubrick estate would never hand it out, because they want to preserve his works as they were intended by him.
So, even if THE THIN RED LINE is messy, it is also startlingly brilliant most of the time. It's like a poem, really. Even if it has its flaws, it shouldn't be changed or extended or whatever, unless the poet himself wants to change it. In that case, though, he shouldn't like one George Lucas NOT give US the choice between different versions of the same poem. Oh boy, am I drunk, or what?:D

These petitions never work, so why the hell am I even signing this? I love Malick's vision, so shouldn't it be left at the under three hour length?
Nah, I can't resist. I'd LOVE a six hour cut on DVD.
Signed.

If it never release i'd be okay because the original cut is a masterpiece. But still, it would be pretty cool.

I've said this before, and I'll say it again.
There will never be a 6 hour version of that film. Why? Because a 6 hour version of that film doesn't exist. After all the principal photography was finished, Malick made a rough cut of the film, and it was 6 hours long, then, on his own without being told by anyone, he trimmed it down to what we all have now. This is a very popular thing that goes on in filmmaking. He didn't make a 6 hour long film that was rejected, the 3 hour film is the true directors cut, its what he wanted us to all see. When he went to show his 6 hour cut, he told them that it wasn't finished yet, mainly to show them the idea of what he was making.

Even if that is the case (and who knows really) I would still love to see the 6-hour cut.
That doesn't make much sense to me anyway. Why would someone cut a 6-hour film just so the studios could "see what he was making"?

Studios ask directors all the time to see a rough cut of their film after principal photograhy has concluded. You view dailies after each day of filming, then after all is said and done you make a rough cut of the film and view it with producers and studio execs.

But is the footage still out there somewhere? And he cut it down to 3 hours, that means he cut half the movie out!
As much as I love the movie, six hours seems a bit excessive to me. But I'd still watch it out of curiosity.
BTW, I heard that All the Pretty Horses was originally 4 hours long. I'd like to see that version of that movie as well.

I still think an original cut exists but your points shouldn't be simply ignored. I've just never heard anyone else saying the cut doesn't exist.
Keep signing!

I read somwhere that Malick doesn't keep his deleted footage, kinda like Woody Allen in that aspect. After the playoffs I'll do some research and see what I can find. Don't get me wrong, I'd love to see a "Directors Cut" as well, even though 6 hours seems like a little too much.

It was just started today (Jan.22). Give it a few weeks and I bet there will be a ton.

You mean a cut where Adrian Brody actually has a line?

I want to see what Terrence has take out of it, and how much it adds to the film.

I'm assuming it adds a whole hell of a lot, including a whole bunch of new characters. What I would rather see though, is the original 3 hour cut of Days of Heaven that he was forced to cut down to 90 minutes give or take.
Doing a little research I found out why Malick shortened The Thin Red Line in the first place, it was in his contract that he not make a film longer than 3 hours. If it were up to him I'm guessing it would of run about 4 hours. Maybe there could be a "Directors Cut' but I highly doubt that since Malick doesn't even like doing Director Commentaries. I did find out however that the original cut is closer to 7 hours, than 6.
