I just heard this on BBC Radio 4's PM programme and thought I should post it here. Here's the BBC website story
Ballet dancer Moira Shearer, who starred in movie The Red Shoes, has died aged 80.
Shearer died in Oxford's John Radcliffe Hospital on Tuesday, her broadcaster husband Ludovic Kennedy said.
"She was full of spirit and also she was very beautiful," he said. "She moved wonderfully gracefully as you would expect of a ballet dancer."
Mr Kennedy said Shearer, whom he married in 1950, gradually became weaker after her birthday in January.
Very sad news. I saw The Red Shoes for the first time only a few weeks ago and absolutely loved both the film and Shearer in it.
