Does anybody else like their music to rock hard with some southern grooves and a slice of Black Sabbath boogie?

Here are some of my favorite sludge or stoner rock bands.

Clutch
Black Label Society
Corrosion of Conformity
Down
Sixty Watt Shaman
Mystick Krewe of Clearlight
Fireball Ministry
Five Horse Johnson
Puny Human
Mushroom River Band
Alabama Thunderpussy
Novadriver

I'm a big Clutch fan, but I'm not as much into those other bands, well not at all.

Great list of bands!! Check out "Beaten Back to Pure" if you haven't already.

They might be too hard for your list but....

Eyehategod
Soilent Green
and Crowbar would be on my list as well.

None can top the almighty Clutch though.

I just added Beaten Back to Pure to my wish list after checking them out on itunes.

Your choices for favorite sludge-rock bands are interesting. The bands that I've always known as 'sludge-core' are a little thicker though...bands like (and these were mentioned in part by eldiablo) Soilent Green, Eyehategod, Sleep, Mastodon, etc.

This all boils down to my little 'theory' that metal stems from either Sabbath or Zepplin and while the styles may overlap, one or the other will always be the predominant influence. Clutch, IMO, actually stems more from Zepplin than Sabbath as is evident in their musical guitar solos while the above mentioned sludgecore bands tend to be more Sabbath influenced.

Oh, I just realized you were grouping 'stoner-rock' into your list and yes, Clutch is definitely that. And I LOOOOOOVE FIreball Ministry! Have you heard Open Hand?

As far as sludgecore though, I actually love the band Sleep and the originators of this sub-genre, The Melvins. And I also really enjoy Mastodon, especially live. My husband is a HUGE Crowbar fan but I am wierded out by Kirk's vocals. Sounds constipated to me. I guess as a whole, I'm not the biggest fan of sludgecore.

One last one....."Devil to Pay" now I'll leave this thread alone.

My favorite sludge band is definitely Crowbar. The guitar tone is pure fucking mud. Kirk does sound constipated, but I still love his voice. I never got into Clutch.

I just don't think of Acid Bath as sludge, maybe because of the gorgeous vocals...I mean, really. Scream of the Butterfly is one beautiful (albeit disturbing) song. Have you heard Agents of Oblivion, Dax's more mellow offshoot?

My husband and I went to see High on Fire about a month ago. It was the LOUDEST thing I've ever seen in my life! My ears CHIRPED afterwards. My five year old was talking to me the next day and I was like, 'what honney?...what was that?' :D

And Neurosis always puts on a great and emotional show.

I worship anything Dax does. So, of course I own the Agents of Oblivion albums. I'd say pretty much all of When The Kite Strings Pop is sludge except for two songs (Butterfly and Bones Of Baby Dolls). At least half of Paegan Terrorism Tactics I would have classified as Sludge as well.

Yes, now that I think about it, I suppose you're right.

Paegan Terrorism Tactics also has this great song Venus Blue that realy delivers in the Vocals department. Have you ever seen them live? I've heard a few people say Dax tends to dissapoint vocally during a live performance. That is vaguely disturbing.

Sadly I was too young too see them live. They split up when I was only 9.

I can't believe Bongzilla has not been mentioned yet. You can't really talk about sludge without throwing them in the mix.
