I love Nightwish. Once is definetly their best album. Every song is just perfect. The only problem is that they are no more as a band. The singer, Tarja (i think thats her name), got kicked out.
Fear not though. If you enjoyed Nightwish, you'd probably like Lacuna Coil. They are a little softer, but they too have a hot singer with a nice voice.

I've been a fan for years. Definitely a badass dragonslayer/80's rock band with that operatic vocal. "End of All Hope" rules and their Phantom of the Opera cover is the best I've heard. It rocks!

My favorites are Once and Wishmaster. I don't know how the hell they're going to replace Tarja. Her performance on Once is breathtaking.

But if it's Nightwish you dig . . .

I agree.
This band is awful, there vocals are so hard to digest. It's like so much
power in the vocals they come off sounding retarted.
Even when I find a song were they get the instrumentals right to my ears, there vocals kick in, and I stop playing the song there.

I know, bummer. But I'm not worried. I think these guys will do the right thing, search long and hard, and find a worthy replacement. There are plenty of opera singers out there. And now with the exposure Nightwish has had (huge in Europe), they'll surely get plenty of try outs.
Ignore party poopers like Heat Collector here. Nightwish is increadible. Once is increadible. The only album I don't really care for is their first, "Angels Fall First."
Wish I Had an Angel has got to be one of my all time favorite songs. It just gives me goose bumps.

Anyway, I'll fill this space with something fun. There's this woman I work with - doesn't like metal at all - and I was even able to turn her into a Nightwish fan.

Not quite. The rest of the band fired her. They just left her a letter in her dressing room stating their wishes after one of the shows. I'm not sure if they've found a new vocalist yet, I know they were holding tryouts a while back... Hm, a quick trip to ThePRP might let me know...
EDIT: Nope, while they are recording demos, they still have yet to find a new vocalist, and supposedly aren't looking for the exact same type of vocalist, but one that they can "tread new ground" with.

Good lord... I just visited their website, these guys are AWFUL. I don’t understand why, or how, they even have any fans.. or why they even enjoy there own music for that matter.
Techno + wannabe metal + opera + weird ass sounds = GAY VIDEOGAME MUSIC.
This music does nothing but make me laugh. And I feel sorry for all who enjoy.

And no, that's not directed towards Tai Mei Jew. I just haven't seen many threads about a band without someone going "Worst. Band. Ever."
I agree, Nightwish kicks ass (Once is a masterpiece), too bad Tarja is gone. I mean, I think Within Temptation is ten times the band (really give a try to songs from "The Silent Force" if you like Nightwish), but Nightwish definitely is my second favorite metal band.
And yeah, I'm a fan of power metal. Hell, I'm a fan of all types of metal (I'm falling in love with death and black metal right now), except Numetal which I'm not very much a fan of. Have also in mind I'm not very knowledgable in music, I just download everything everyone suggests.

They say that when a ship is sinking , the rats leave first and the captain stays until the end.
Well , talking about Nightwish , its bad Tarja was kicked out and ppl threw the towel because the new announced singer is as hot a piece of ass and the voice sounds good so far. Althought I will admit that it is not as good as Tarja. ( She had a unique warmth in her tone and it's hard to beat THE group voice from scratch ) , we have to remember that Nightwish is a great symphonic metal band that no one can match. Vocal is 1 thing , music is another.
Tarja's NEMO --> http://nightwish.com/files/audio/nemo-sample.mp3
Annette's EVA --> http://nightwish.com/files/audio/eva-sample.mp3
almost equal ..... BUT
Annette's 7 Days To The Wolf --> http://nightwish.com/files/audio/SevenMP3.mp3
Superb musical track but Anette's vocal lacks a bit in high pitch IMO.
Taking the part of a well-liked good singer isn't the easiest thing to do but I'm willing to give her a chance.

But I just watched the video of Anette and she's cute too. At least looks cuter than Tarja. Never found the whole Morticia look very attractive.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed. The new song is nice, but hardly a good indicator. But I don't think she has quite the "oomph" that Tarja had.
I wonder how good a singer they could have found had they not expected her to be beautiful as well.

I'm bumping this thread to ask some stuff to the fans who didn't jump off the wagon when Tarja left.
What did you guys think of "Dark Passion Play", now that the whole "Argh Anette!" thing has boiled over? I personally loved it, and find it to be my favorite Nightwish after "Once" and "Century Child". I adore Anette. She has a great voice (which, okay, isn't Nightwishy at all, but who cares?) and lots of presence. "Amaranth" and "For The Heart I Once Had" are fucking great.
Second in the list, has anyone listened to any of Tarja's solo stuff? I got her album "My Winter Storm" and have given it a thorough listen. Found it to be very purdy. Some of the tracks are a little boring, but overall it's pretty solid. Think Nightwish when they're being their mellowest and most melancholic ("Forever Yours", "Sleeping Sun", if you like those), without the heavy guitarwork and chorals. "I Walk Alone" and "The Reign" are my favorites right now.
Hopefully I'm not the only one who is still a Nightwish fan. Might get to see them live in a couple of months, should be interesting.

Here in Europe the album had great sales, so the change of singer turned out to be a great success for them. I was sceptic how the fans would take it, but they stayed loyal. It's Holopainen's band, anyway. Turunen and her husband really screwed things up and left the band no choice but to fire Turunen.
Personally I like Anette's sound more, even if removes the opera gimmick from the band. Never been a fan of the band, thought. But I respect what they do, and of course I support a local band who has made it big internationally.

Annette has absolutely no range or strength in her voice. The whole time I was listening to the new album, I couldn't help but think how much better it would be with Tarja. Annette is spectacularly bland.
It's a testament to the music ability of the band that the album is still pretty good.
I really like Tarja's solo album. It's solid, but clearly put together by committee.
The way I see it is this: Tarja and Nightwish need each other. As separate works, they will never be complete. They will always be good, but not great. There will always be that "what if" factor.
Hopefully a few years down the road they can reconcile their differences.

A little off topic here...
Do you guys listen to the other 'similar' bands? After Forever, Epica, Stream of Passion etc..?
In my opinion, Epica's latest release far outshines Nightwish's.
You should also check out stuff like The Gathering's older stuff (not that there anything wrong with the new stuff, its just not 'metal' anymore), Draconian, Tristania... Assuming that you havn't already, of course.

Through Nightwish I began getting interested in other kinds of metal (as seen in the metal thread that's dying like some sort of dying patient), so I began searching for other similar bands.
Within Temptation, as I've pimped many times around here, is my favorite. But I also love Epica (haven't heard their latest, but "The Phantom Agony" and "Consign to Oblivion" are fantastic), Lacuna Coil ("In A Reverie" is so underappreciated; better than "Comalies" for me), Theatre of Tragedy, Leaves' Eyes (I'm a sucker for Liv Kristine), Tristania, Xandria, Cadmenia, even Beautiful Sin (though that's, what?).
Cool genre.

Lacuna Coil is one of my favourite bands, and you are right, In A Reverie is underappreciated, as are the 2 EP's... Unleashed Memories is perhaps my favourite though... I'm anticipating the new release!
You really need to get Epica's new one 'The Divine Conspiracy' - It's bloody brilliant!
As for Liv Kristine... I HATE Leaves' Eyes, really hate them. It wishy washy, wet and boring (In my opinion :P) But the old ToT stuff is pretty good... very atmospheric, Dark Velvet They Fear is wonderful!
Hmmm... there should be a female fronted metal thread or something.

Angtoria are pretty awful IMO, REALLY middle of the road.

The DreamsideOut of those I've only heard Octavia Sperati and Angtoria. The former is great, the latter a little too much on chorals. Like WT on steroids.
I think I've heard something from Estuary but not sure.
And yeah, Unleashed Memories = tits. Too bad you don't like Leaves' Eyes. It has some interesting songs. "Into Your Light" and "Solemn Sea" are great. But then I just love Liv Kristine. My favorite Theatre of Tragedy is "A Hamlet for a Slothful Vessel".

Is that the first album you hear by them? If it is, do listen to "The Silent Force" and "Mother Earth". The first is incredible, better than "Heart", the second is great. "The Heart of Everything" is fantastic, but "The Silent Force" is a little better in my opinion, more heartfelt. Just have in mind that "What Have You Done" really, really isn't their sound. It was a song made to catch people's attention.
I'm gonna see them live in three weeks for the first time. Can't fucking wait.

Nightwish was the band that got me into metal. Just before Century Child came out I heard Wishmaster (the song) and Over The Hill and Far Away and I was just blown away. Before that I was listening to the likes of Creed, Chili Peppers and Tool so this was something insanely different for me.
Their best albums IMO are Oceanborn and the new one Dark Passion Play. I still prefer Tarja's vocals but I think Anette is great as well and the way things are now, we get a Nightwish album and a Tarja solo album, so like 2 Nightwishs' :P
As for the Leaves' Eyes talkins in this thread, I think they are great, I just recently bought both albums and Vinland Saga is definately the stronger of the 2.

I dunno, I like 'The Silent Force' but I always thought it was a little weak, I'm not sure why... I haven't actually listened to it once since THOE came out.

Yeah, I have all their tracks. It's the only band in existence whose stuff I really seek out obsessively. "The Dance" is great. "Enter" is all right, I think they found themselves somewhere around "Mother Earth".
And that's fucking awesome you've seen them so many times. I have both live DVDs and they seem like incredible performers, so I had been lusting for a day they'd come to Mexico (they had only come once 3 years ago, before I even knew them); I jumped at this chance. There's also a "meet and greet" at the end, so I'll get a chance to meet them. Again, no other band I've ever been interested in meeting.
Did you see them in "The Heart of Everything" tour? How are those songs live? Just as awesome?

Those songs really rule! The Howling and The Heart of Everything are just completely brilliant! The highlights of the shows for me are always 'Deciever of Fools'. 'Ice Queen' and 'Mother Earth' though... Its just insane!
Ahhh... Mexico, I'm guessing the venues will be pretty small there? Over here in the UK they are playing massive venues, which i really don't like. I got to see them 4 times in America last year though, in tiny venues - that was AWESOME!

Extremely small. And in the dodgiest part of the city (which is pretty scary, but hey).
I can't wait to hear "Our Solemn Hour" live, that shit must be chill-inducing, same for "Jillian". And yes, they seem to ace "Ice Queen" every time. Do they play a lot of songs? Because I went to an Evanescence concert a few months ago and they didn't really play that much. The "Java Island" concert looked great because they played so much; I hope it's like that every time.
