Requiem for a Dream is my favorite film of all time, and these two performances were fabulous. Which did you like better? Ellen Burstyn's performance is one of the bests I've ever seen.

Burstyn by a landslide. I thought Connelly was good in this, but her performance palls in comparison to Burstyn's extremely sad and emotional performance. She was robbed at the Oscars (of course, not like that hasn't happened before).

They both deserved Oscar wins, but I'd say Ellen Burstyn by far had the better performance.

Very powerful film, also very sad! Ellen Burstyn's performance was one of her best, up there with ALICE DOESN'T LIVE HERE ANYMORE and THE EXORCIST. A very difficult role, a very brave and powerful performance. For me, she's the best alive actress who still acts ("who still acts" is important- let's not forget that Katharine Hepburn is still alive... but doesn't act anymore).
About Ms. Connelly... I've always thought she was very gorgeous but couldn't act... until this film. That scene with the dildo...

I still can't get over the fact that Ellen Burstyn didn't win the Oscar.

Well, considering the fact that she was up against the most popular film actress in the world who had been nominated twice before without a win, who arguably gave the best performance of her career. It's easy see why Burstyn, who won a Best Actress Oscar before, didn't win.

Close call, but Ellen Burstyn had the meatier role, so I'm going with her.
