Pop star: 'Horrifying, frightful encounter with paparazzi'

NEW YORK (AP) -- Britney Spears defended photographs showing the pop star driving with her infant son on her lap, saying she was dodging the paparazzi.

Several photos published Tuesday showed Spears driving her SUV with her son, Sean Preston, perched on her lap rather than strapped into a car seat in the back seat. Spears said she did it because of a "horrifying, frightful encounter with the paparazzi."

The photos show Spears holding the wheel of the car with one hand, and her 4-month-old baby in the other. A person is shown sitting in the passenger seat next to Spears.

"I was terrified that this time the physically aggressive paparazzi would put both me and my baby in danger," Spears said in a statement released late Monday.

"I instinctively took measures to get my baby and me out of harm's way, but the paparazzi continued to stalk us," she said. "I love my child and would do anything to protect him."

A spokesman for the Department of Children and Family Services, declined to offer any comment on the incident.

"We don't say who, what or if we're investigating," Stu Riskin said.

Sheriff's deputies, meanwhile, won't be pressing any charges, Deputy Luis Castro said.

"Unless a deputy saw the violation, there's nothing we can do," Castro said. "We don't even know if this took place in our jurisdiction."

The agency that snapped the photos, X17, said the pictures were taken "in a very peaceful context, in which photographers exhibited no aggressive behavior."

"We believe that the pictures speak for themselves," the agency said in a statement.

Spears gave birth to her son in September. He is her first child with husband of one year, former backup dancer Kevin Federline.

I hope she has an expensive court battle to keep that kid. This is just stupid, stupid, stupid. Unless the photographers were trying to eat her baby like hungry wolves or something, he defense is lame, lame, lame. I'm just glad that there was no Princess Diane stuff following up with the kid going through a windsheild -- I'm sure Spears would be much happier having THAT picture being taken. :rolleyes:

And I want to say, I HATE the papzi, HATE them with a vengance. However, them being shit-ass people doesn't excuse celebrities acting even worse, to the point of doing something as stupid as speeding off in an SUV with your kid behind the wheel. She is an unfit mother. The poor kid also has an unfit father as well. The baby is probably taken care of by a team of nannies or something, while her and Kevin are out fucking and partying.

I agree very much with Bubba's sentiments. I also hate the Papparazi. I think they are leeches on Society and would happily work for free to gather information on these scum that take joy in putting other peoples private problems into the spotlight. Had Cobain put the shotgun to the baby's mouth, or even had done himself in in front of the doll, maybe your analogy would hold true. Cobain never directly risked the life of his child for the sake of avoiding the press.

I say it again --- I HATE the papz, and have been annoyed by the way they act first hand - I've actually chased photographers before and in a comedic fashion, because they seriously scatter like roaches, one even having a bicycle stashed in a bush to use as get-a-way -- It was strange because I didn't think they'd be so unconfrontational of me, who they don't know, and who doesn't exactly look like security - but what Britney is doing is just bad parenting, and has very little to do with paparazzi. It takes less than a minute to use a car seat.

Well she is still ignoring the rules of the road and in response to your statement about the airbags, a baby as small as he is would be killed by an airbag which is why you are told to never have your baby in the front seet. Airbags will hit and suffocate a small child. The warning labels are clearly posted in the front area of a new car like hers but she should know better anyway. Britney is so fucking dense. As well, if she got into an accident, rear ended or had a collision, that baby would probably have a small chance of survival where he is if any.
