View Full Version : Out Of Print...Nooooo!

One of the biggest pains in the ass is when a DVD title goes ‘Out Of Print’. This is extremely tough for those who enjoy the more obscure genre films, so I prefer to make this point. Keep in mind; this is based on my own personal experience of being a rabid Horror DVD collector. When you see a title that you are after, unless it's just another easily obtainable mainstream title, grab it while it’s still available. Because it really is amazing to me how fast some titles go on the old moratorium list, out of print, just like that!
When companies like Blue Underground and Synapse put out a title, you can rest assure that if it is an obscure title (which they deal in mainly) you better get that DVD when it hits the proverbial streets. Don’t put off that purchase, unless you’ve got too many bills to pay, snag that title that you have been patiently waiting a millennium for!
I am still kicking myself in the ass for missing out on the ‘Maniac Cop’ DVD from Elite Entertainment; it is out of print and hard to find. Here is just a small list of tiles that are out of print:
Blue Underground:
The Allen Clarke Collection
The Christopher Lee Collection L.E.
Dead & Buried 2-Disc L.E.
Fast Company
The Final Countdown 2-Disc L.E.
The Larry Cohen Collection
The Mondo Cane Collection
Salon Kitty 2-Disc L.E.
Scum BBC Version
Two Evil Eyes 2-Disc L.E.

I agree! I once had a copy of Prom Night (#1) in my hands, but put it back. I've been regretting doing so ever since!
The cult classic called "The Burning" is out of print too!

I don't think so. I heard they're releasing that on DVD later this year. Not only that, I was able to get it at the Monster Mania Con last year.
actually, it's been released on DVD a few times in the UK. I actualy have some OOP DVDs... my most prized is KISS Meets the Phantom of the Park.

I still cry over not having the R1 Special Ediiton of Phantasm. The new release sucks over it. The first had one of the best extra treasure chests available. Oh well now I have the R2 Sphere and I think all the extras are probably still on there, just likely distributed and stuff. If not will have to hunt down the OOP Phantasm. Almost had it on my hands once but the seller for some reason never charged me nor sent it
I actually do have the R1 Phantasm DVD, it was great. Definitely one of the best DVDs MGM ever released. Last time I saw it in stores was in 2003, and i had no idea it was OOP til last year! Oh well, maybe you'll get it, I used to think Iwould never find the DVDs of Grizzly or Slaughterhouse but now I got em.

You know what old movies I thought were out of print? "Final Exam," "Graduation Day" and "Student Bodies." All classic rip-offs and parodies of "Halloween" and "Friday The 13th" back in 1981. I was never able to find them anywhere for the longest time. But then, I found out I was able to order them on DVD at my local mom & pop store. They really are still available somewhere! Yippee, I can't wait to see them!

Apparently. It probably went to DVD in limited release, fell through the cracks and is just hard-to-find. You ought to try ordering it and these mentioned "out of print" movies as well. You never know what you may find.
A few years ago, I was able to find "The Boogens" through pre-order at Suncoast. It wasn't on DVD and I still don't think it is. VHS tapes of it still existed.
I also found "The Entity" a while back as well before it was released on DVD. It was hard to find, but I was able to pre-order a VHS of it as well.
And also, "The Hand," another underrated gem from 1981. Not on DVD yet, but VHS's still existed a few years ago.

It seems that movies are being discontinued much more nowadays for some reason. New Concorde have pulled a slew of titles from the shelves, including all of the Slumber Party Massacre films, both of the Sorority House Massacre films, Hard to Die, The Coroner, and almost all of their Maria Ford titles. I'm also pissed that Hunting Humans has gone out of print already.

Although these titles may be OOP, the majority of them are still widely available if you look in the right places, for example:
Dead & Buried LTD Edition (http://www.ezydvd.com.au/item.zml/225258).
Two Evil Eyes LTD Edition (http://digitaleyes.resultspage.com/search?p=R&srid=S9%2d4&lbc=digitaleyes&w=Two%20Evil%20Eyes&url=http%3a%2f%2fwww%2edigitaleyes%2enet%2fdetails %2ecfm%3finfo%3dRYKOBU2001DVD&rk=3&uid=463118370&sid=2&ts=custom&rsc=cJLNG2WT1IV6-PnU&method=and&isort=score).

I own Student Bodies on Laserdisc by Paramount, and don´t believe that the company released this movie officially on DVD or we would have read something about it...
I know MGM released Clown House on DVD but withdraw the title immidiatly for some reason (Victor Salva crime???)
the same happened with I know what you did last summer on it´s first release because it was promoted by the creator of Scream or something like that

Believe it or not, I have been hitting up the previewed sections at blockbusters, FYEs, and eb games and finding some hard-to-get stuff.
At blockbuster I found the aformentioned Phantasm SE and Carnival of Souls criterion for 5$ each. (Carnival is not out of print nor very rare, but every other time I have seen it, it was upwards of 30-40$)
Then at FYE I found the old directors cut dvd (gold case and cover) of Army of darkness for 9.99$
And I find The Beyond special edition tin at ebgames for 10 bucks. I was in heaven.
Also, blockbuster has the whole 4 for 20 (9.99 or under) and 3 for 20 (15 or under) sale goin, so if you collect dvds, check em out. I just buy them, make sure theres the inserts and that there are no stickers on the disks or coverart, and but them in new cases which you can buy in bulk. :D

I came in here to mention The Burning, but I see it's already been brought up. I've been wanting to see The Burning for so many years now its crazy.
So I did a little research. Apparantly MGM has the rights, and have remastered the movie. If they go through with the DVD, it should be out sometime late this year or early 2007, hopefully with bonus features and all that good jazz.
...Unless someone knows how I can see the movie now?
and yeah, if Elite Entertaininment released a DVD you want, snatch it quickly because it seems like all their DVDs go out of print.

It's funny you brought up the situation regarding 'The Burning' and MGM. The SE DVD was first announced for a 2005 release, then it was said to be a summer 2006 release. Since summer has come and gone, I guess we'll see about 2007...I only hope.
I have The Burning uncut on vhs, but I need that damned DVD!
You're right about Elite, they're stuff goes on the old moratorium list faster then all hell...

My life these days....don't ask (God-awful)
The boards are one of the few pleasures left for me...sad, I know.
The Count? Haven't seen him around too much these days myself, then again there are times where some of us seem to drop off the face of the earth for a bit....and so it goes.
I still have to send along a completed piece of art that I owe to the Count as a favor.
( I gotta' get off my arse send that off ASAP)
Phew! I think that about covers everything... ;)
Again...It's great to hear from you Halo! :D

I know---that still PISSES me OFF!!! I NEED the CAR on DVD NOW!
Underrated best describes the film, dark and full of malevolance.
which features an excellent cast. We get James Brolin, "The Great" John Marley, R.G. Armstrong and character actor favorite Ronny Cox. Too bad that upon it's initial release, The Car was over-shadowed by (a galaxy, far...far away) 'Star Wars' back in the summer of 77.
And I believe that you started a thread on that one a couple years ago..... I missed out on buying the Book of the Dead edition of Evil Dead. Goddammit! I STILL don't have the new Grizzly DVD, it's on a backorder! It's a good thing I got the Slumber Party Massacre DVDs when I did, but I had no idea they were OOP. I remember how upset I was at missing the DVD of Redneck Zombies due to it being OOP, however I got it on VHS and there is no way in hell I'm spending money on it again.

I picked up the Evil Dead 'Book of the Dead' edition when it 1st hit DVD, I also own a copy of 'Grizzly' on VHS. As for the SPM series, I own the 1st & 3rd film on VHS. One of my favorite T&A horror flicks (which I own on VHS & DVD) is 'The Sorority House Massacre 2': Nighty Nightmare.
Last but not least 'Redneck Zombies'---a classicly so-bad-it's-good film, or should I say cheaply shot on video? I bought it on VHS for $3.00, couldn't pass it up at that price! :D ;)

Thanks, Cronos!
I live in the states...but I appriciate the heads up. Unfortunately I don't have a region free player yet. Since I'm on the topic....
I recently stopped in at my favorite shop that buys & sells new and used DVD's. I came across a copy of 'Nightmares' (1983) on DVD by Anchor Bay (still factory sealed to boot) which is OOP, it was released in 1999 at an SRP of $59.95.
I got it for only 4 bucks!!! Not too shabby, so I hope that I will eventually find 'The Car' at this shop...sooner or later it WILL be mine! ;)

God don't get me started on Out of print movies! Will SLAUGHTER HIGH EVER be released on DVD???!! Will THE WOMAN IN BLACK ever come back??!!! CLOWNHOUSE? MGM, why did you even bother you FUCKWITS!!!!
NIGHT OF THE DEMONS was a nightmare to get hold of! It claimed a R2 release was imminent, but never came to fruition. I finally got hold of a R1 copy without breaking the bank!!! Why has ROSEMARY'S KILLER (THE PROWLER) NEVER been released R2?!!!
I have also noticed a serious shortage of Xmas themed horror and 80's slashers on R2. I own SILENT NIGHT, DEADLY NIGHT 1 & 2 thank to a R1 box set. I've NEVER seen NEW YEARS EVIL, FINAL EXAM or NIGHT SCHOOL! I know virtually nothing about these films!!! All we get are the god awful post SCREAM slasher rip offs like SCREAM BLOODY MURDER etc
BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!
