I think the Blue Velvet and Lost Highway are the best, but Elephantman is great too. I think that David Lynch is a master director.
What do you think guys?

Actually, i'm going to say "The Straight Story," which is a completely different film from any of his others. He shows a real touch of humanity and beauty in directing this movie.

DAVID LYNCH
1. BLUE VELVET (1986) A
2. THE ELEPHANT MAN (1980) A
3. MULHOLLAND DRIVE (2001) A
4. WILD AT HEART (1990) A
5. ERASERHEAD (1977) B+
I didn't include the TWIN PEAKS television series, because this is a film forum (but I would rate it second only to BLUE VELVET). The "prequel" (FIRE, WALK WITH ME) is barely worth a mention.
I haven't seen THE STRAIGHT STORY yet (although I was a big Richard Farnsworth fan). And I hated the incomprehensible (and reprehensible) LOST HIGHWAY.

"Blue Velvet" is the only one I've seen so far, but I think it's pretty good.

Didn't want to start a new topic on the subject if we had an old one, so I unearthed the old one.
1. "Blue Velvet" (1986)- A+
2. "Mulholland Drive" (2001)- A+
3. "Twin Peaks" (Pilot) (1990)- A+
4. "The Elephant Man" (1980)- A+
5. "Twin Peaks" (TV Series) (1990)- A (First Season; Eps. 1-7)
6. "The Straight Story" (1999)- A
7. "Wild at Heart" (1990)- A-
8. "Dune" (1984)- B+
9. "Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me" (1992)- B+
10. "Twin Peaks" (TV Series) (1990-91)- B- (Second Season; Eps. 8-29)
11. "Lost Highway" (1997)- C
I have yet to see "Eraserhead" (1977)
(I didn't notice that this was a Favorites one instead of a Best thread when I bumped it. Oh well. My Favorite Lynch film is probably "Mulholland Drive", with the "Twin Peaks" pilot and "Blue Velvet" not far behind, and the list following- as above- from there.)

This is embarassing, but the only David Lynch flick I've seen is Mulholland Dr.. I loved it, and can't wait to see more of his work.

I will say The Straight Story. Only because I have only seen two other ones by Lynch: The Elephant Man and Dune. But, The Elephant Man is a very good rival to The Straight Story, I guess it could be either of them. Two wonderful dramas. I have never been the subject of one of his mind games yet, however, I'm very interested in seeing what it is like. Lost Highway is high on my list, one day I'll get to see it. Dune was very close to a mind game because you couldn't figure out if there was a plot or not; that was a crazy movie. One of intensely beautiful imagery, but no coherent plot to sustain those images.

"Blue Velvet" is his best work... of course, I'm still trying to figure out how much I liked "Mulholland Dr." Don't get me wrong, I dug it, it's just one to think about for a while.

since you ask for one "movie". My all time favorite should stay The Straight Story. A disney movie by David Lynch. Who would ever have taught! It is one of the most touching movies I saw.

Elephant man and Blue Velvet are fantastic movies. I also enjoyed Twin peaks at the beginning but then unfortunately it faded away. My opinion of Lynch is that he does possess talent. However I feel that he has had patches in his career where his movies are strange for the sake of being strange and substance has payed the price.

Mulholland Drive or Eraserhead. Both could be his best, both could be my favorite.
MD simply blew my mind in so many directions the first time I saw it. I read a piece by David Foster Wallace about when he saw Blue Velvet in theaters as a college student and having the same reaction. This is my Blue Velvet, and I think MD might be one of the most artistically important films ever made. I've spewed pages of reasons why I feel this way on this board, so i won't regurgitate, but for the fascinating tangle of semiotics, feminist theory, and brilliant dialogue, MD is the masterpiece of current film.

Mulholland Drive reigns supreme in my eyes as the ultimate Lynch masterpiece. Every other film or project he worked on led up to this film. It's his greatest work, and even though I like the baffling twistiness of Lost Highway or the creepy suburban nightmare of Blue Velvet, MD is the one that trumps them all.

I am tempted to say ERASERHEAD which i only watched yesterday night and got completely blown away by this guys imagination!
BUT if i see this movie again and again and again i would probably be sick or something.
I still didnt see The Elephant Man, Wild At Heart, Dune or The Straight Story.
From Mulholland Drive, Eraserhead, Blue Velvet, Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me and Lost Highway the winner is...
Mulholland Drive.
BUT i am yet to watch all his movies and my opinion will most probably change. If i see ERASERHEAD again then my opinion will change maybe.
I dont know.
At the present its: MULHOLLAND DRIVE

I was the most surprised by "Wild At Heart" so that's my favorite Lynch movie.
When I rented it I had no idea who Lynch was or what he was capable of doing.
