Hey everybody,
I've created this thread here so everyone on here can speak their minds about the upcoming 2006 Oscar nominations and who you think will win and lose. You can talk about earlier wins and losses and predict who will win this time around based on their performances. As well, we can talk about the technical awards and give opinion on who should win and who should have been nominated since many groups who clearly deserved an Oscar have not even been mentioned. So, here is information on this years 2006 Academy Awards and let's give opinions and news stories people have heard about the upcoming event.

uhhh . . . Okay - since this is official. :D
I love the Oscars and I really can't explain why. I guess it's because I'm just interested in what the industry considers to be the best.
-Brokeback Mountain is the only movie I didn't like among the Best Pic nominees (though I haven't seen Capote and probably won't anytime soon). Munich was my favorite in the same category. BUT, come prediction time - it'll be Brokeback Mountain when I'll fill in my vote.
-I don't think George Clooney will win anything, which is a shame because Good Night, and Good Luck is a very good movie and should be recognized in one form or another.
-The acting awards will be the only awards those respective movies will walk away with: Phillip Seymour Hoffman for Capote; Reese Witherspoon for Walk the Line; Paul Giamatti for Cinderella Man; and Amy Adams for Junebug. Those are my predictions!! :D
-Robert Altman is the MAN!!! - for MASH alone.

That's good bigred, good opinions. I also feel the same way about George Clooney not really walking away with anything. He doesn't even think he'll walk away with anything himself so who knows. Many people also feel that Crash is one that might get some top honours and maybe win Best Picture but I highly doubt it since I think it will come down to Brokeback Mountain and Munich for sure. I hope that Steven wins Best Director for Munich because he realy put together a brilliant film in such a small amount of time. It's going to be interesting once it comes down to the wire.

I don't think Clooney will walk away empty handed on March 5th. I just don't. His best shot is for Supporting Actor, and I think he'll win there, since his best alternate option is winning Original Screenplay for GNAGL, but Crash is taking that category.
Barring some great upset (possibly an Amy Adams win), I still think it'll go like this:
Brokeback Mountain
Ang Lee
Philip Seymour Hoffman
Reese Witherspoon
George Clooney
Rachel Weisz
If it was my vote in the major categories, it would go like this:
Munich
Steven Spielberg
Terrence Howard
Felicity Huffman
Matt Dillon
Amy Adams

Spielberg won't win Best Director just because he's already got two. I'm of the opinion, that it's usually the limit for a director (although John Ford has four). Anything can happen though, but I believe that Munich will win the same amount of awards as George Clooney :D.
I think Amy Adams will win/upset just because that's the category where the most upsets happen. Although I haven't seen Junebug, I've heard nothing but good things about her performance. I haven't heard anything about Weisz's - which makes me believe that Adams will walk away with the Oscar. Not saying that Weisz is bad or anything, I'm just predicting upset.
I don't think Felicity Huffman will win for a few reasons: 1)Absolutely NOBODY has seen the movie; 2)She has an Emmy or two, 3)Walk the Line got snubbed for Best Picture, so Best Actress will make up for it as far as the Academy is concerned, 4)Witherspoon was probably better anyway :D

Yeah Lazy Boy, good ones. On the spot of Best Actress award, I'm pretty sure that Reese Witherspoon will be walking away with an Oscar as well but maybe not since she won the Golden Globe and the SAG award. It's a tough decision but I personally think she should win.
For Best Actor, I'm stuck between Phillip Seymour Hoffman and Joaquin Phoenix winning since both were stellar. If I had to make a real hard choice, I'd give the Oscar to Joaquin since he was so great.
As for Clooney, he may win and he may not. It's not a definite.

That's true about Speilberg Lazy Boy but I'm not sure that they won't because Clint Eastwood also has 3 Oscars as well for Unforgiven, Mystic River and Million Dollar Baby so who knows. It may go to him and it might not.

Eastwood didn't win for for Mystic River - lost to Peter Jackson and LOTR: Return of the King. Eastwood is stuck on the two.

Oh crap, sorry bigred, I forgot about LOTR. You're right, he stands at two now.

No need to apologize.
I wouldn't mind seeing Spielberg get a 3rd Oscar. I just don't think he will this year. Ang Lee will get his first Directing one (he already has one for Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon - Best Foreign Language pic).

I seem to be one of the few people who found most of the nominated films overrated.
I thought Crash was very good but overrated.
Munich was a big dissapointment with a repetitive screenplay
Brokeback Mountian was pretty good but way too long and overrated.
The only films I did like that are nomianted are Good Night And Good Luck and Capote. Whats sad is that while he deserves it I think Hoffman performance has overshadowed the film. Everyone remebers that but forgets the film was excellent.

Well, it was kind of suprising that Capote was nominated instead of Walk the Line. Maybe its nomination will spark more interest in the movie, other than just the lead's performance.

While I enjoyed Walk The Line I thought Capote was far better

I've seen all five nominated movies, and I don't really think Crash belongs. I thought Match Point was far better and deserved a best picture nom. more, in my opinion.

I sort of agree with that since Match Point was an awesome film for last year but I don't think that acting wise, Crash will really earn anything but I might be wrong.

I still don't think that Brockeback Mountain deserves Best Picture or Best Director for sure. Not with all the other films it is put up against. There is something I cannot figure out as well, why in the hell was Eric Bana not nominated for Munich? He was brilliant in that and you're telling me that Heath Ledger was better than Eric Bana. Bullshit.

It's all perspective for the most part. I wanted King Kong at the top of Oscar voter's lists, but that didn't happen. The only movie that made my top five out of the Best Pic nominees was Munich - and that was #5. So, I'm not going to bash or criticize anybody for their choices - just make predictions :D.

Wow, don't we love Brokeback Mountain.
To offer a rebuttal, everybody SHOULD win. In my opinion, that's practically the definition of a nomination. It's a huge honor to be nominated which means that your performance was among the five best of the year - at least according to your peers. There's no trophy for 2nd place.
But I like how you think that Catherine Keener should not have been nominated for Capote but should've been for 40 Year Old Virgin. Good stuff, good stuff.

I agree. No need to pick one winner. The nominations are enough.

I still have no idea why comedies get very little respect. You listen to showbiz interviews and everyone always says how comedies are more difficult to pull off than dramas. And yet the same people year after year go out of their way to ignore comedies during the awards season. Catherine Keener clearly gave a more memorable performance in 40 Yr. Old Virgin. She did nothing in CAPOTE, except maybe get out of Hoffman's way to make him stand out more. I guess that's what the Academy considers great support.

That's all true, Catherine should have been nominated for 40 Year Old Virgin for sure.
Still, I really do wish that Eric Bana would have been nominated for Munich.
