Anyone who was ever an X-Phile (raises hand) will also know that his short-lived TV series, "Kolchak: The Night Stalker" was the inspiration for the show. He even guest starred in the episodes "Agua Mala" and "Travelers"

RIP

Really a bad day.
I loved this guy, he was fucking awesome.
Always will I remember him as Kolchak - I will watch some episodes to honor him. But at least he died at a ripe age (83).
Also, he was great in Alfred Hitchcock Presents and of course, Christmas sotry.
Don Knotts was also an awesome guy, sucks that he too died.
I say an RIP for both of them. They will be remembered...

And played Murphy Brown's dad (excellent casting), the DI in Tribes and was in my favorite Magnum, P.I. episode (for what that's worth), playing a Hemmingwayesque writer named Mad Buck Gibson, who was dying and wanted to go out on his own terms, trying to hang glide an almost certainly impossible distance between two islands.

He was, quite simply, money in the bank.

Sad day, indeed.

My favourite character that Mr. McGavin played was unquestionably, "Kolchak the Night Stalker". Which I grew up watching as re-runs on the Sci Fi Channel. His role as the father in "A Christmas Story" goes without saying. And I also liked him in another father role, in "Billy Madison". I personally would have loved to have seen him return in some role on the short lived, and quickly cancelled "Night Stalker" television show that ran on ABC, but it just wasnt meant to be.

Great actor, and it's sad to see him go.

Rest in Peace, Mr. McGavin.

Thanks for the memories.

Easily one of my top ten favorite TV shows of all time.

I can only hope that Darren is hanging in space over Lake Michigan with the tapestry of obscenities he wove.

He was Sandler's dad in Billy Madison. I don't know if it's true, but I always like to think that the character of Shooter McGavin in Happy Gilmore was named after him as an homage. It may not be true, but it's a nice thought.

He was pure genius in A Christmas Story and will always live on through that movie- he must've known that. :)
