Do we have any DC fans among us? Hope so. This topic is about one of what I consider to be his best storys in a movie. Well maybe not his best, but one of my altime favs. And that is Scanners. I have the DVD of it and it's devoid of extras save for a trailer. What I would love to see in a special edition.
The movie uncut (if it was)
Audio commentary by at least Mr C & Mr Ironside (revok)
Maybe some deleted scenes if there are any.
Making of or behind the scenes.
Trailers.
Bios of all the key actors and fiilm makers.
A makeup effects featurette of Dick Smith.
A nice gallery.

What I want to know is what the process of things was:
a) Cronenberg came up with the idea of "scanning" and thought it would make a cool movie.
or
b) Cronenberg wanted to make a movie but had a low budget, so he came up with "scanning", which simply requires the actor to screw up their face a bit and then plonk a bit of synth over the top thus creating a very cheap but believable superability.
I'm sure an audio commentary would do well.
I've seen the 3 film Scanners set around, but I've never seen the 2nd and 3rd films. I imagine they're not a patch on the original.

Scanners is based on incidents in that happend in the 60s;
Pregnant women were given Thalidomide(aka;Kevadon, Softenon ), a new painkiller designed to ease the pains of birth, there were side effects;some childeren were still born, some were extremly deformed and others were severly mentaly handicaped.

I, like you schmoes, am also a fan of Scanners. Cronenberg is my all time favorite director and Scanners has one of my all time favorite scenes and characters. I love Michael Ironside as Darryl Revok he makes such a great villain it's unfortunate he isn't in it more but still his time on screen is awesome. As I stated before this contains one of my all time favorite movie scenes and no it's not the exploding head (though that is awesome). It's the scanner showdown, that is just a great piece of work, great display of make up effects and the score works perfectly with the scene. The one thing though that I've always disliked about this is Stephen Lack(Cameron Vale) he's honest to god got to be the worst actor I've ever seen. I mean the man has no emotion or facial expressions at all. But other than that this was actually a really good flick.

How is the Special Edition of The Fly? I plan on picking it up soon, along with Scanners, Videodrome and Naked Lunch. It's a shame Cronenberg put out the complete let down (in my honest opinion) that was A History of Violence.

I agree totally, G.O.W.! I'm a long-time fan of DC, and of SCANNERS as well. Love Patrick McGoohan in this.
So, I guess I'm the newbie, huh? Well, hello to all!

i'd love to see criterion pick up Crash, Scanners, and Shivers... the only thing i don't like of Cronenbergs features his is commentary, they are very listless.... however the supplements on Videodrome are great... scanners needs a special edition treatment...
