You know I think there's a lot of cases of a band going clean in terms of stopping the drugging and boozing....then their next record sucking shit. I can think of a lot off the top of my head, but for now I'll only say With Teeth by Nin. Boring, unspired, overproduced shit that pailed in comparison to his drug fuelled opuses. Let's name some more!

You can also go the other way around.

Look at Stevie Ray Vaughn... his better stuff was while he was clean and sober.

Granted, some bands seemed to have been better when on their Drug of Choice, but there are also just as many instances where them NOT using drugs also provides a lot of inspiration. Take Jerry Cantrell, for instance. I loved his Mad Season kick, when he was clean and sober. Then, he goes back to drugs and fucks up the whole band.

Oh well.
How about referencing:
1. Bands that SUCKED after getting off drugs (and why)
2. Bands that IMPROVED after getting off drugs (and why)

Then ask if the choice to change the 'style' of music was the main influence for making the 'newer' on/off drugs album better or worse.

It's funny, when I saw the title of the thread, that's the first album I thought of. I dont think the record sucks. But it is a dissapointment, when the guy has made 2 of the best rock albums of the past 20 years.

It's not really a band, but the first thing I thought of when I saw this thread was Robin Williams. The guy was fucking hilarious on cocaine and now he's family friendly and useless.

Matallica has sucked in its post Alcohollica days. Hetfield needs to get back on the bottle and write another Master of Puppets instead of St. Anger. They lost their edge with the lack of alcohol, drugs, and hair.

Keith Richards needs to get back on the horse.

I heard that Richards still smokes the occasional doobie.

But I think injecting heroin at this point would kill him...Or turn him into an indestructable super-being.

O Z Z Y

Not only did he make better music as a junkie, he also almost killed Sharon. So close!

ROFL nice one! Yeah, Richards is at the point now where soon he won't be a walking mummy... he'll be a walking SUPERHUMAN mummy!

Drugs can only fuel your creativity for 20 years tops before you burn out. Look at the Stones.

Frank Zappa was apperantly clean his whole life, but he made plenty of great, cerebral shit. When you *are* drugs, you don't need to take them.

That being said, bands like Spiritualized wouldn't be the same without the leader being a junkie--though Pierce isn't looking too good lately and his last album was a bit iffy.

Good! I was hoping someone would say that!

Although I do like St. Anger, maybe because I was comparing it to Load/Reload/Black Album. Yuck.
