Heartbreaker and Cold Roses are genius but you should also check out Gold, Love Is Hell, Jacksonville City Nights & 29. Less noteworthy are Rock And Roll and Demolition. But if you like all of the aforementioned then you WILL want these too. And that's before you start to dip into his past as a member of Whiskeytown. Stranger's Almanac and Pneumonia are the equal of anything he has released as a solo artist. With his most prolific year just under his belt (he released three fucking albums in 2006 one of which is a double...that's just an incredible workrate...and there's nary a dip in quality to be heard) and talk already turning to what his plans for 2007 might be (another album is due) I think he might be one of the most talented and important artists to come out of the US in quite some time.

I also have Gold, which I forgot to mention, and I like it quite a bit too. Out of all the albums I don't have it sounds like I'll be picking up Love Is Hell.

What are some of your favorite songs/albums?

Albums:

1. Heartbreaker/Cold Roses (too hard to decide)
2. Gold

Songs:

1. Blossom
2. Oh My Sweet Carolina
3. How Do You Keep Love Alive
4. To Be Young
5. La Cienega Just Smiled
6. Friends
7. Sweet Illusions
8. New York, New York
9. Magnolia Mountain
10. Shakedown on 9th Street

I think perhaps you got the years mixed up because I'm quite certain he hasn't released three albums this year (one being a double). It's 2006 right?

This also nulls your 2007 statement I believe.....

I haven’t been on the board in a while but when I saw my boy Ryan in a thread I needed to get in. He doesn’t seem to have enough appreciators. I’d go…

1. Heartbreaker
2. Jacksonville City Nights
3. Cold Roses
4. Gold
5. Love Is Hell
6. 29

Demolition and Rock N’ Roll both have a few nice tracks but as entire records are pretty sub-par.

Songs: Come Pick Me Up (one of my favs of all time), To Be Young, Trains, A Kiss Before I Go, Dear John, My Winding Wheel, Magnolia Mountain, Beautiful Sorta, Political Scientist, Anybody Wanna Take Me Home, Hallelujah, Firecracker, Somehow Someday are all fantastic.

I really enjoy his stuff. He doesnt get much exposure in Australia but you can find his albums if you look. I think he toured here a couple of years ago with reasonable success but I missed his show

^I agree

I'm listening to some songs off Love is hell, and I dig them. I would call him a more mature(and better?) Conor Oberst.

Also, if you like Mr. Adams's songs, scour around soulseek or torrent sites. I have like 4-5 'unreleased albums' ive gotten from there, and I'm sure he has more. All in all I probably have 200 songs by the man. A man who has had a career for like six years. GOD DAMN. THAT'S CRAZY.

HIs best 'unreleased album' is 48 Hours, which is about as good as Cold Roses. Suicide Handbook is good too.

I'd say his best released album is Heartbreaker, which is easily one of my favorite albums ever.

Ahhh don't even compare him to Conor. Please, this is a thread of respect to Ryan.

I only have Rock N Roll and Heartbreaker, and out of the two, Heartbreaker is much better (To Be Young is an amazing song), but I can't really consistently get into either of them...

Also, if you like Adams, listen to Neil Young - Zuma.

Well...i've been meaning to do just this for a while now. So at your prompting I booted up my DC++ headed for the best music room available and after a quick search and a couple of hours of downloading I had 48 Hours, The Suicide Handbook, Exile On Franklin Street, the album of demos with The Pinkhearts, the Q Division Sessions, and i'm in the process of downloading the mammoth 7-disc Bedhead series. And beyond those there seems to be yet more that I will be investigating over the course of the next few days. I've gotta say...Ryan Adams seems to be heading in the same direction as the great Bob Dylan in terms of unreleased albums. I anticipate that maybe 10-20 years down the line there will be a huge box set released containing an insane amount of unreleased tracks.

Oh...and as per your Zuma recommendation. Not my favorite Neil Young album but it's still essential. I've been itchy with anticipation for the rumoured big box set that Neil Young has been working on for the last several years collecting together a lot of unreleased recordings. Reports suggest that it's going to be a monster.

It's all live stuff. But good clear recordings. None of that amateur hour bullshit. I imagine that much of it surely must be gleaned from sound desk material. It's mostly made up of songs that he's never recorded but has played live down the years. There's well over 100 songs spread over the seven discs including cover versions of songs such as Dead Leaves On The Dirty Ground and Beast Of Burden. I'm just a bit pissed that the fifth disc is missing a bunch of tracks (i'm a completist). What i've listened to so far sounds awesome. I'm well happy. I think i'm going to be having a Ryan Adams Fest over the next couple of months. Hell...i've got enough new stuff here that it's going to take me at least that long to give it all more than a cursory listen. And that's not taking account of all the rare Calexico stuff I downloaded last week. Go myself some mighty fine sounds here to be getting on with. Hallelujah!!!

I can't believe Ryan Adams would ever cover White Stripes. Nothing against them, but I always pictured him as thinking he's too cool for that band.

No. He actually changes the lyrics of the song a bit to comment on how cool the bands coming out of the detroit scene are...including a namecheck for The White Stripes. I'm assuming that you don't like them. Yes? No? I've enjoyed every White Stripes album and loved most of them. So I guess I can't contemplate any reason why Ryan Adams wouldn't like them.

Generally not a fan of them, no.

I just think he wouldnt' like them for the same reason he hates The Strokes. A critically applauded band that people say they like when they're trying to be hip and underground, which in turn has made them a bit uncool and aboveground.

Which to me makes them cool again.

Uh, he recorded his own version of IS THIS IT (the whole album), and the Strokes' drummer plays in one of his songs.

Well I heard a rumour that the first song 'This is It' off of 'Llor Kcor' was a dig toward The Strokes.

I could be wrong? I'm looking for evidence of this right now....

Can't believe I was trumped by The Heart Collector.

Believe it. Because he's right. Ryan Adams recorded his version of their entire debut album and has covered various Strokes songs live. I have a couple of these live covers meself.

They played "La Cienega Just Smiled" near the end of an episode of Angel, feel in love with the song.
