These four are worth going for alone. Incredible. This lineup seems a ton better than some of the previous ones I've seen.

I'd consider RHCP and Sonic Youth pretty big bands. It would've been amazing to have Radiohead or Pixies or The Cure, but the lineup is impressive as it is.

He's not a great performer.

He's a mediocre rapper at best. And his production is solid but that can't make a whole record, much less a live performance. But his collered shirts look very um, classy. So that makes him very relevant.

Why can't he be kidding? Just because he does not share the same musical taste as you, he has to be wrong? Kanye West is a great rapper, and just a great artist in general. You may not like him because he's controversial and sometimes does stupid things, but most artists out there do the same. So don't fucking hate on people because they don't like the same shit you do. Throw out the names of bands/ artists you like and I'll dissect them one by one.

First of all, I'm not 'hating' on anybody. I've seen HC put a lot of music posts on here and he's put up some pretty great stuff, I've been really impressed with his taste, so that Kanye comment caught me off guard.

Secondly, he's not a great rapper, that's not even a matter of debate. His rhyme schemes are brutally simplistic (often repeating a same word disguised as a rhyme), delivery is sporradic at best, and a vocabulary with a lot to be desired. This isn't just my take, ask any true rap fan how good of an actual 'rapper' Kanye is and they'll tell you this too. In fact Jay Z was very hesitant to sign him initially, just because he was for the most part, unimpressed with his rapping skills. Check out The Rolling Stone cover article on Kanye a month or two back if you want proof of this. He's an amazing producer, everybody will admit this, but in terms of lyrical prowess, he stands far below mic monsters like Canibus, Ghostface Killah, or Ras Kass. I'm not hating on you, or HC here. You're obviously not alone in your admiration for Kanye, so all the power to you.

So basically what you're saying is Kanye is not a good rapper, and if someone thinks he is they're wrong. I don't think Kanye has the best lyrics, and for the most part, I just like him because his music has great beats and production and all that. So in part, I agree with you on that he isn't a great lyricist. But, I don't believe that that isn't debatable. That you can definiatly debate someone on, and possibly have a decent argument. If I had to I could defend him in being a good lyricist, even though I wouldn't completely agree, I would be able to sight a few lyrics inside of his catalouge that shows his skills.

I'm sorry for saying that you were hating on him, when you really weren't, just disagreeing.

If my entire post didn't make any sense, I'm sorry. I'm really bad at trying to prove my point in writing ;)

I was just saying that if to really define if someone is a good rapper, it's subjective until you start looking at it from a technical point of view and that's what I was doing. He definitely has times where his lyrics stand out as pretty extraordinary but those come admist a mass of mediocrity. So yes I could pick out a couple of very impressive examples, but I could pick about ten times more that weren't.

That said there's more to being a successful hip hop artist then just lyrical skills. The artists I mentioned like Kass and Canibus are killer lyricists but lack in other areas, like production and song structure, two things that Kanye excels at. So I guess I was just saying that if you like Kanye that's cool man, but I just think you'd be hardpressed to make a convincing argument that's he's actually a GOOD rapper. That's all.

No apology needed dude!

JUST ONE WEEK. ONE MOTHERFUCKIN' WEEK.

I'm gonna be there.

First day I'll watch

- 12:30 The Subways (unless I decide to grab lunch outside, instead of at my place before going. So yeah, probably miss this.)
- 1:30 Cursive. They're ok. Boy, they got a shitty time.
- 2:30 Eels. Better than the other option, Panic At The Disco. Ewww.
- 3:30 either Editors or Stars. Probably grab some water/food first, don't really need to watch an hour of Editors/Stars.
- 4:30 Ryan Fuckin' Adams
- 5:30 The Secret Machines. Though I might just end up grabbing some food/water, and waiting for the band at 6:30, which would be...
- 6:30 The Raconteurs. Hell yeah.
- 7:30 Sleater Kinney. I'll probably just watch like a half hour and then go get a good spot for...
- 8:30 Ween !!! <3 <3 I like 'em.

FUCK YEAH.

Then 2nd day:

- 12:00 Be Our Own Pet. If I get there on time. They're a nice band. Plus I bet there won't be so many people so it'll be fun.
- 12:30 Nada Surf, I guess. I've heard their name. If they suck I'll go watch the other band.
- 1:30 The Go Team. Should be fun, even if I'm not a huge fan of their music.
- 2:30 Built To Spill. Not a huge fan, so I'll probably refresh first rather than catch the whole hour.
- 3:30 Wolfmother. HOWEVER, I probably will miss this, to stand near the stage in which I'll see...
- 4:30 SONIC YOUTH. Hell yeah. They've been playing mostly stuff from Rather Ripped (which is fine, I love the album) but hopefully they'll play a couple of older ones.
- 5:30 The Dresden Dolls, I guess. Or The Smoking Popes. I don't really care. Might skip either to see the next band, which would be
- 6:30 The Flaming Lips. sweet.
- 7:30 The New Pornographers, though probably just half, to not get a completely shitty spot for
- 8:30 Kanye West. Should be fun. Too bad I can't see Manu Chao, though I might just catch some of his act since I think this set is 1:30 hours.

Sunday

12:30 Sparta. They're ok. Should be decent live.
1:30 The Hold Steady, though I might just skip it.
2:00 Hot Chip. I'd skip Hold Steady for Hot Chip.
2:30 Ben Kweller. Who is this dick? I dunno, i heard some songs and its ok. I'll give it a shot.
3:30 a bunch of shitty bands. I'll take this time to walk around and hit on fat chicks.
4:30 The Shins.
5:30 Poi Dog Pondering, maybe. Haven't heard them, but She Wants Revenge sucks ass. I'll probably use the time to get a good spot for...
6:30 Queens Of The Stone Age? Or Wilco. I dunno. This is the one I haven't decided. I'll probably flip a coin. Or ask around to see if QOTSA have been any good live recently.
7:30 Broken Social Scene. I might skip it just so that I don't get a horrible spot for RHCP.
8:30 RHCP. There's no actual choice here, they're the only ones playing.

SHOULD BE FUN.

and this weekend, PITCHFORK MUSIC FESTIVAL!!!!

That should go:

Saturday
2:00 Man Man
2:35 getting some fucking water, waiting for 3:30
3:30 The Mountain Goats, aka my obsession.
4:20 a bit of Destroyer, then some more water.
5:10 Art Brut
6:10 Ted Leo
7:10 Walkmen
8:10 Futureheads
9:10 Silver Jews

Fuck the Biz3 stage.

Sunday
2:00 Jens Lekman
2:30 water, nigga. water.
3:30 Liars
4:20 Aesop Rock.
5:10 Mission of Burma <3 <3
6:10 Devendra Banhart
7:10 Yo La Tengo
8:10 Spoon
9:10 Os Mutantes

Weather reports say there's going to be 'excessive heat' from Saturday afternoon to Tuesday. From 95 to 105 degrees or some bullshit. AINT THAT NICE. Fuck it, i'll rock out NAKED.

Goddamn I love Chicago. <3 <3

Heart Collector, have you been to one of these before? When you say you're going to skip some bands to get a good spot for others, are you just being safe or did you actually experience that in the past? Because Grant Park is huge.

Boy From School is catchy *punches you in the ear*

I'm not a huge fan of the other bands playing at that time so I'd rather dance a bit to that.

Bake:

- From recent setlists, Ryan Adams seems to be playing his country material. So expect songs from Cold Roses, Jacksonville City Nights, and Heartbreaker (When You're Young, Shakedown, Winding Wheel). Also probably one or two from Rock N Roll ,Gold, Love Is Hell. BUt yeah, mostly the country material.

- I haven't gone to any music festivals. However, from looking at the Lollapalooza message board, everyone's advice from last year seems to be that if you want a good spot, your best bet is to just wait there for an hour. Keep in mind that when I say good spot (for the artists that aren't headliners), I mean being 2 feet away from Lee Ranaldo. Someone posted a picture from last year and the crowd behind him (for The Pixies) and it was just fucking EPIC. So yeah, for the headliners if you want a good spot you definitely should skip at least some of the earlier band. :[ AINT THAT A BITCH. Then again, there's giant display screens, so it's probably not a big deal for most bands since, if you're far awayish, you can just look at the screen.

Also, word on the street is that Peeping Tom will be added to the lineup. Apparently Patton even said so at last night's show here. So yeah, even MORE REASONS FOR LOLLAPALOOZA TO OWN BALLS.

From best to worst, but mostly arbitrary - because the majority of the bands kicked ass. So the 'worst' aren't that bad really.

1. DRESDEN DOLLS - Hadn't gotten into them before, but they were completely awesome. The drummer fucking rocked, the energy was beyond amazing and the female singer showed her tits. Fantastic.

2. THE NEW PORNOGRAPHERS - Save for the lack of Neko Case and 'Letter From An Occupant', their set was essentially gold. Pop gems performed to perfection.

3. QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE - I still haven't digested tonight's bands.. but all I know is that QOTSA rock live and the solos were incredible.

4. IRON & WINE - Beautiful stuff. I didn't think they would work live, but they were one of the best.

5. KANYE WEST - Save for the audio problems in the beginning, he BROUGHT IT. I was way back but I could feel the intensity and I loved that he showed off other Chicago talents. The man has a big ego, but the talent to back it up. That was one huge party near the AT&T stage.

6. SLEATER-KINNEY - OK, I think they are fucking brilliant but the crowd bothered me. Too many screaming girls with mustaches. But they did put on a great show.

7. BUILT TO SPILL, MY MORNING JACKET, FEIST, SONIC YOUTH - Good stuff. Didn't blow me away, but kept my interest. Sonic Youth should have played 'Teen Age Riot'

8. RYAN ADAMS - I thought his guitar-work was amazing, but he is a bit self-indulgent and wasted way too much time talking about eggs and egg police and some random shit. Wtf are you smoking, Ryan? It's a one hour set and he's rambling like the homeless people on the El.

9. THE SHINS - Took some time to get going, but I liked them at the end. Simple summer afternoon songs done well.

Now, onto the stuff I wasn't that happy about...

10. STARS & EELS - They just sounded lost in front of a large crowd. I don't know what it is but the music doesn't transfer in that setting.

11. THE FLAMING LIPS - Yeah, THC. I said it. The blue balloons and santa costumes and confetti were cool and all, but the music kinda blew. It was just passable stuff and I know they are known for their stage shows but maybe they can put some emphasis on the music.

12. RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS - The crowd were a bunch of idiots and I got kicked in the head way too many times by crowd surfers, but that aside -- too many songs from Stadium Arcadium and not 'Californication', 'Under the Bridge' and 'Suck My Kiss' and other cool songs. I guess it was good for RHCP fanatics, but for casual fans like me, I was kinda pissed at their setlist. Flea and John Frusciante did belt out some mindblowing solos though.

13. DEATH CAB FOR CUTIE - Bored me. I regretted not seeing enough Ween. After the powerhouse Sleater-Kinney, Death Cab was flat and when you put all their songs together like they did, they all sound the same. I left halfway through to catch some Ween who at least looked like they were alive.

I saw some other bands like 'Andrew Bird', 'Calexico', 'Wolfmother', 'Broken Social Scene' but only partly and I couldn't really judge how good they were from a few songs. I wanted to see 'Manu Chao' but Kanye had a grip on my balls with superglue.

All in all, great weekend. The women looked nice, the bands were almost all excited to be at Lollapalooza and besides some drunk morons, most fans seemed to be rabidly into music like me and not just there for a picnic.

Hey, THC. Did you see that Chinese looking kid with the green mohawk in the RHCP crowd? Most amazing kid ever.

I was like two rows away from the stage at the Flaming Lips show. It was pretty much impossible to NOT have a fun time when you're right there, constantly yelling YEAH YEAH YEAH YEAH YEAH YEAH, FANATICAL FUCK, lifting people up so they can crowd surf, and jumping up and down. I'm not even a huge Lips fan, but that thing was just a huge party.

Saturday was the best day by far, since after that Kanye ruled balls.

Ween was pretty cool too. Played everything I hoped they would. OCEAN MAAAAAAN
