I had the misfortune of seeing them in concert when they opened for Nin. Worst show I've ever seen. Homme spent the whole time throwing stupid jock insults at the crowd. They were way off key. They didn't move from the spot they started out on. Death From Above 1979 were the first opening act there and blew them out of the water. I couldn't believe how bad of a show Queens put on.
Then again I think their records are boring, uninspired pieces of shit too.

I saw them open for NIN twice and I thought they brought the house down.

But I stand by my decisions. Led Zeppelin is waay overrated... The Who is just OK, and the Rolling Stones just plain suck except for "Sympathy for the Devil".
Guns N Roses are VASTLY underrated. The 3 Major albums they've put are all classic. Axl Rose is one of the greatest frontmans ever (whatta voice man). Slash and the rest of the band play amazingly, and there all great live. I wish they'd get their dues.
And Sublime I don't think are too underrated, but I think they deserve respect for what they've done (and what they could of done). Just listen to the self titled album... Its kicks ass.

Actually, I sort of like Sublime, but it would have ruined the joke to say "1 for 5"...
Sorry, guys...I really do not like Brian Wilson's act. I've bent over backwards to give them the benefit of my doubt, because so many people I respect and whose judgement I trust like him/them, but it ain't happening. It's like the rock n' roll version of Buffy.

metallica is definately overrated... from the black album back were masterpieces... the black album is when the mainstream discovered them... and then every album after that just sucked.... and the last album, st. anger was one of the most horrid albums ever... bought it for 20 bucks, listened to it once, and then gave it away

CCR was dismissed for years as just a good singles band by a lot of rock critics. Their reputation has been gaining steadily for around 20 years or so, but it's still not where it should be.

Granted I'm not a fan of their studio releases but I was willing to give them a chance when I saw them open for Nin in Edmonton. Not sure if they do this every show but a)The band members did not move at all, and not in a cool 'shoegazer way', b)Homme spent a good portion of the time insulting some idiot in the crowd who insulted him. Boo hoo, and c) Were consistently way off key, not to mention pretentious, indulgent jam sessions. Oh and I'm not talking about Grateful Dead type things either, I'm talking bad Quicksilver Messenger Service type things.
Overall, fucking yuck.

Not trying to start some shit, just wondering your arguement for calling Led Zeppelin wayyyy overrated and calling Axl Rose the greatest frontman ever. I like GNR but they are not underrated at the least during the late 80's early 90's they were the band with use your illusions 1&2 both solid ass albums they were the band of there time. Led Zeppelin although not the g.o.a.t. are not overrated at all

When it comes to being overrated, The Rolling Stones take the cake. I don't want to begin a gargantuan rant, but the overratedness of The Stones will definitely bring it out. I almost threw up at my Superbowl party when I saw my mom and her friend "rockin' out" to (what was quite evident to me) shitty fuckin' shit (thank me on the eloquence of my words later).

I used to think that too, since I was only exposed to their mainstream, FM type stuff. Then I picked up some of their early stuff and it's actually pretty mindblowing. If you listen to any of the following records through and through:
Sticky Fingers
Exile on Main Street
Beggar's Banquet
Let it Bleed
and still think they're overrated, then come back but don't judge them on that superbowl performance, which was actually quite wretched.

Actually, maybe two hours after I typed that I happened to hear Tired of Waiting For You, and thought "Maybe I should go back and clarify that..."
They're a great band. It's simply that my perception of where they rank in the critical consensus of bands of the British Invasion is right behind The Beatles and The Stones and ahead of everyone else and I don't really see it that way. Plus, I'm not as in awe fo Ray Davies' songwriting ability as most everyone is. So it's sort of a matter of degree.
All this Doors hate is damaging my spirit. I blame Stone and that shitty, shitty piece of shit movie and Val Kilmer and his damned brain dead, hanigin' out at the Billy Baldwin Memorial Post Office performance for giving some people the wrong impression of that band and Morrison in particular.

No, I get what you're saying. It terms of rank behind bands like the Beatles and Stones and ahead of others, I can understand where you're coming from and such. I mean, I'd put the Yarbirds ahead of the Kinks any day of the week. I don't find them terribly influential myself, but they did make some damn fine music, fun stuff to listen to.

Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin are common answers for "overrated", but I think now that people have become so aware that they are the common choices for this category that their popularity among music aficionados is declining severely. Personally, I don't think either of them are really great - but I like Pink Floyd's stuff a lot more than Led Zeppelin's. LZ has a lot of energy, but their sound is pretty bland. It's just straight blues and adrenaline. Not very interesting.
Just to interject...I don't think it was just straight blues. I mean, in the early days, blues played a major role in their sound, but I think their sound was more then just blues. I mean, their sound has spread from folk and country, and even influences from India, and the surrounding area. I think they were more then just some blues band filled on energy and adrenaline. I mean, if you listen to stuff like "Whole Lotta Love", "Rock and Roll", "Dazed on Confused", and "Black Dog", then ya, there's tons of blues and energy. But, then you also have stuff like "That's the Way", "Fool in the Rain", "In the Light", "D'yer Mak'er", stuff that's so completely different from the other songs mentioned. It could also because I've listenened to their stuff inside out. I also think it's important that a band is filled with adrenaline and energy when creating music, you don't feel cheated that way.
I don't wanna come off sound harsh or anything. I'm just a diehard :)
I also realize this thread is all a matter of opinion, so hey.

My thoughts exactly. It seems kind of pointless to say that bands are popular worlwide, i.e. Radiohead, are underrated. Same with Sublime and some other bands mentioned. Any band who has had multiple hits on national radio can't really be considered underrated. Same with Guns N' Roses. Weren't they like the biggest band in the world or at least the US at one time? Not exactly underrated if you ask me.
My picks for underrated:
Eels
Kings of Convenience
Mclusky
Old 97's
Rjd2
16 Horsepower

Right... In Canada they get the fuckin' recognition they deserve... everywhere else, they don't... And I think it has something to do with Sony's lack of promotion for them... When they came to Scotland they were only known as "Special Guest" playing second fuckin' fiddle to Avril Lavigne... (Fucking hate that cunt)...
I've got all their albums, and believe their music is fuckin' brilliant... As well as Everclear's...
