Rushmore, Grosse Pointe Blank, and Full Metal Jacket are all good calls.

However, FMJ was only half of a great movie. The second half was pure drivel. Unrealistic war scenes and bad dialogue nearly ruined the whole movie.

Firstly, Duel was actually a TV-movie, so that's probably a very good reason why it didn't get nominated.

Secondly, L'Atalante and L'Age D'Or are much too sophisticated for the Academy. What chance did a foreign flick had in the '30s? Or the '20s (Joan of Arc, Napoleon, I doubt anybody in the Academy even saw this flick before 1930)? I mean, even Best Foreign was introduced in '48.

Anything by Lubitsch, and Bringing Up Baby(especially).

The Academy really should look at horror and satire much more closely.

I'm not list the movies year by year, only the movies that first comes into mind

Chasing Amy, Singin' in the Rain, Wonder Boys, Adaptation, Heavenly Creatures, Misery, Dracula (1931), Psycho (Hitchcock), etc.

2002- Adaptation (Spike Jonze)
2001- Memento (Christopher Nolan)
2000- Requiem for a Dream (Darren Aronofsky)
1999- Magnolia (Paul Thomas Anderson)
1998- Happiness (Todd Solondz)
1997- Boogie Nights (Paul Thomas Anderson)
1996- The People vs. Larry Flynt (Milos Forman)
1995- Leaving Las Vegas (Mike Figgis)

1986- Blue Velvet (David Lynch)
1985- Back to the Future (Robert Zemeckis)
1968- 2001: A Space Odyssey (Stanley Kubrick)
1960- Psycho (Alfred Hitchcock)
1959- North By Northwest (Alfred Hitchcock)
1954 (I think)- Vertigo (Alfred Hitchcock)

Hell, pretty much every Hitchcock movie that wasn't nominated for Best Picture. The only one of his movies that was ever nominated was Rebecca, which won. But he has done so many classics, and they weren't even nominated.
