View Full Version : Bored with extras

Extras used to be a consideration for me when buying dvds. If a film came out on a vanilla dvd I'd often wait for an SE release down the line and I'd always choose a 2 disc version of a film over a 1 disc.

However recently I've found that I watch extras less and less, mainly because it eats into time in which I could be seeing another film I've never seen before.
I keep my dvds in large cd wallets due to lack of space in my room and when I re-organised them recently (and added an extra 200 or so into a new wallet) I found myself putting many of the extras discs of 2 disc SE's back in their original cases and into storage with the empty cases in the attic.
Even those extras I do watch, bar a very select few, are one watch affairs.

I've noticed recently that a tactic in the UK lately has been to re-release films that originally came as 2 disc versions at budget price, dropping the second disc and I've purchased a couple this way recently (A Very Long Engagement and The Descent). From here on out extras aren't going to figure into my purchasing decisions, it's all down to price, screen format (no OAR, no sale) and transfer quality.

Any thoughts on this? Do you love extras, do you buy or upgrade your dvds just for extras or is a film alone enough to make you part with your hard earned?

Depends on which movie it is. King Kong '05? I could care less about the extras. The Devil's Rejects? Well worth investing in the two-disc for me. And that's not to say Rejects is better than Kong to everybody, since I know some like it more, what I'm saying is that I know enough about Jackson's filmaking techniques from 12 discs worth of stuff from LOTR, so I'd rather invest more time in learning about Zombie's, which contained a whole disc dedicated to the production of the movie, with still more extras on the first disc.:p
There are other examples, but you see my point.

Personally, I rarely take the time to watch a behind-the-scenes doc, unless they are unique or different than the regular fluff piece (Peter Jackson's Kong diaries come to mind). I didn't care to get the Kong two-disc set, since my main interest is in the film.

The only extra I look forward to is a good commentary track, and I don't mean those bland, dull, pedantic ones where the speaker talks "Oh, look, this was our last day of shooting" or stuff of that nature.

its always hit or miss with me....mostly i will watch the making of and other extras, but more often than not, the extras are so short and pointless its not even worth getting the "second disc"....

...BUT that's definately not the case with all movies..i couldn't really get into the extras on Donnie Darko: Director's Cut, but to this day I CAN'T GET ENOUGH of "The Snowball Effect: Making of Clerks" on the Clerks X Three-disc set.....i do agree on "The Devil's Rejects"- way of special features making, where the special feature can be just as entertaining and in-depth as the film itself

it's all with the movie
terminator 2:ultimate edition is a great example. Favorite movie of all time and I'd love to see more on it. Star wars is another example

it's all the movie

Agreed, if the movie is good, the extras should be intriguing to watch as well.

i always go for releases with extras (as long as the film isnt edited, its OAR) unless theres no chance of a better edition, ive put off buying numbers dvds in the hopes of them getting better versions

i do have a number of dvds though that still have extras that i havent watched such as the 3 disc Brotherhood of the Wolf, ive had it for over 4 years and still have yet to watch disc 3

I watch some. The thing that just pisses me off to no end is the DTS situation.

King Kong was a huge release, uit had DTS in the theater. Why did the disc not come with it. I spent $4000 on my theater rooms sound to experience the movie on another level. DTS is the way to go and alot of people do not use the format. bastards.

I have couch shakers. Silent bass units that rumble the couch with bass hits. The War of the Worlds earthquake scene when the aliens come out of the street is like a back massager. BECAUSE IT HAS DTS. The 5.1 is not nearly as good. LOTR is amazing. And Jurassic park, Fowgetabbouit!!!

My point is thins, i have found myself putting alot of movies back due to not having DTS. I almost didnt get Hostel, Just Friends, New Zorro, and bunch others becasue of it.

If the extras are done well, I will watch them, I'll watch 5 minutes then turn it off if its no good. Devils Rejects is very good one. Fight Club double disc is amazing.

My favorite movie right now is Walk the Line, i bought the 2 disc for the features. HORRIBLE FEATURES. The directors commentary was okay.

The best commentary directors are David Fincher, Oliver Stone (listen to JFK if you want to see how smart he really is) Rob Zombie

THE KING OF COMMENTARIES IS ROBERT RODRIGUEZ.

Rodriguez does the best DVDs period.
Film Schools. Cooking Schools. The new Sin City one was amazing.

I usually look at buying the two disc with bonus features, but I like to look up reviews to check out if the bonuses are worth it. But yea sometimes bonuses can suck like on the Bourne Supremacy dvd. Has like 8 docos, but they're 5 mins each. They might as well have cut them up together!

All depends on how much I liked the movie.

There are movies that I liked enough to buy but really don't care about the extras and then there are movies that I love and want as many extras as possible.
