I think your Ice Age prediction is a little high. There is no doubt that this will be a big film, but I am not so sure if it will be Monsters, Inc. big. If it has an opening that high then it will definitely cross the $200 million mark though.
My Predictions:
1. Ice Age- $38.0
2. Showtime- $20.0
3. Resident Evil- $16.0
4. The Time Machine- $13.0
5. We Were Soldiers- $10.5
6. 40 Days and 40 Nights- $4.0
7. John Q- $4.0
8. Return to Neverland- $3.5
9. A Beautiful Mind- $3.0
10. Dragonfly- $2.5

I see RE surprising some people,i hope. It's a unique offering, considering there aren't too many Horror films out there,at least ones with zombies, lickers, and tyrants.Plus it has a huge following.Showtime has been done before, and Ice Age is just one of the latest CGI creations with annoyingly cute characters.

Ice Age-30 mil
RE-25 mil
Show-18

I don't think the numbers for RE will be totally accurate because i see tons of underage blokes paying for a pg-13 or g-rated film and sneaking into to RE instead.

It's time for some mutant zombie action.I've had enough of the politically correct CGI and Buddy film offerings.

Resident Evil - 8.5 Million

I'm bad with numbers but I'm guessing Ice Age will be huge. Besides the fact that it's one that looks good for kids and funny for adults it will have the new star wars trailer ahead of it too.

It might not have as many people going just for that as other movies have in the past since it is going to be on TV tonight.

I remember the last time one of the star wars trailers came out. My theater had to put up a sign stating that no refunds would be given once the trailers begin. People were paying to get into the theater to see the trailer and then getting refunds since they didn't give a crap about the movie.

Ice Age - 38 - This will be huge, I mean come on, CGI animation, good for kids and adults!
Showtime - 20 - Deniro and Eddi Murphy, Need I Say More?
Resident Evil - 15 - Hot Chicks, Zombies, and Action... What guy won't see it? Girls on the other hand...

Horror Whore seems to be the only person who is being realistic about Resident Evil. Compare the movie to Tomb Raider (which was a huge success). Milla Jovovic is less than half the star that Angelina Jolie is. Resident Evil is less than half the videogame franchise that Tomb Raider is. Everyone who came within 3 feet of a computer during the '90s played Tomb Raider, while Resident Evil is just one of dozens of imitations. Put it all together, and consider how cheap the RE trailers look (technologically equivalent to Wing Commander, which was what, 5 years ago?), and you have a movie that is unlikely to open more than one fourth of Tomb Raider. (Also, remember that Tomb Raider was released in the summer, which is the best time for poorly-scripted FX movies.)

The Other
03-11-2002, 10:41 AM
This is what I think the three new movies will make...

ICE AGE - $38-40 million
Showtime - $17-20 million
Resident Evil - $8-10 million

Whoever predicted that RESIDENT EVIL would make $25 million must've been thinking with his dick. As Crapstorm already pointed out: Milla Jovovich is no Angelina Jolie when it comes to talent and b.o. appeal, and the game isn't as popular as TOMB RAIDER. I'd also like to add that the marketing for RESIDENT EVIL has been lame compared to that of its predecessor. The surprise this weekend is going to be SHOWTIME. Since it's playing in only 2600 screens, it has no chance of beating ICE AGE for the #1 spot. But it should have a stronger opening than most of you have predicted. It has tremendous crossover appeal. African-americans will flock. So will action-comedy fans. Its PG-13 rating makes it family-friendly. And last but not least, the De Niro factor. De Niro and comedy are a match made in box-office heaven. As for ICE AGE, the only question is how big it's going to be? It's playing very wide (3200 screens). So a $30 million opening is a given. But will 20th Century Fox join the Kings of Animation, Disney and Dreamworks, in the blockbuster department? My predictions:

ICE AGE - $35 million
SHOWTIME - $26 million
THE TIME MACHINE - $13.5 million
RESIDENT EVIL - $12.5 million
WE WERE SOLDIERS- $11 million
ALL ABOUT THE BENJAMINS - $6.5 million
40 DAYS AND 40 NIGHTS - $4.2 million
JOHN Q. - $3.8 million
RETURN TO NEVERLAND - $2.8 million
A BEAUTIFUL MIND - $2.8 million

ICE AGE is going to be huge.

1) ICE AGE - $45 million
2) SHOWTIME - $25 million
3) THE TIME MACHINE - $16 million
4) RESIDENT EVIL - $12.5 million
5) WE WERE SOLDIERS - $10 million
6) 40 DAYS & 40 NIGHTS - $6 million
7) JOHN Q - $5.5 million
8) RETURN TO NEVERLAND - $4 million
9) A BEAUTIFUL MIND - $3.5 million
10) ALL ABOUT THE BENJAMINS - $2.5 million

Oh my, a box office post! http://www.joblo.com/ubb/wink.gif
I'm sure it's impossible to predict anywhere near the actual, you have to see it to know, BUT, I'll give it a shot anyway...

1.Ice Age - 35 M
2.Showtime - 20 M
3.Resident Evil - 15 M
4.We Were Soldiers - 10 M
5.The Time Machine - 9 M
6.All About the Benjamins - 5 M
7.40 Days/40 Nights - 4 M
8.John Q - 3.7 M
9.Return To Neverland - 3.5 M
10.Dragonfly - 3 M
11.??

I don't think 'A Beautiful Mind' will be in the mix anywhere, but can't think of an appropriate replacement for #11. :P

If resident evil bombs, im gunna... don't get me started. i could really care less about the other openings however, Ice Age might open lower thann most expect. anyway, back to RE, im am dyin to see this movie. from most advance reviews, this movie sounds great and packed with action, suspense and topped with some good ole nudity. im prayin for a franchise to come. hopefully RE will open with at least 15 million, but unfortunately, that's probably just me being optomistic. http://www.joblo.com/ubb/frown.gif

ps. does anybody know how many screens Res.Evil is openning on?

I am sure Resident Evil has a small cult of loyal fans like EDsoulsurvive who will camp out on opening day, but cults do not a blockbuster make. Look what happened to Final Fantasy last summer. Huge bomb. Really, the only movie adaptation of a videogame to bust the block is Tomb Raider, and most of the credit there goes to Angelina Jolie's huge ... um ... stardom. It's naive to think that Resident Evil will earn more than $12m this weekend. $9m is a more realistic guess.

Crapstorm
03-12-2002, 12:22 PM
I made an error in my previous post. There have been other videogame adaptations than Tomb Raider that have been successful. Here is a list of all the based-on-videogame movies I could think of with their opening weekend grosses. (I left out the Pokemon franchise, because it's not technically based on a videogame.)

1. Lara Croft: Tomb Raider (2001) $47.7m
2. Mortal Kombat (1995) $23.3m
3. Mortal Kombat: Annihilation $16.8m
4. Final Fantasy (2001) $11.4m
5. Street Fighter (1994) ~$10m
6. Super Mario Bros (1993) $8.5m
7. Wing Commander (1999) $5.1m
8. Double Dragon (1993) $1.4m

I don't think that Resident Evil will really flop that bad. I think that it'll do about the same business as the Mortal Combat franchise. However, I am not sure if it will actually reach it's production budget domestically. Imdb.com says that it costs $67 million to make. It's quite risky to put that much money into this movie.

Final Fantasy may have worked if it was similar to the games and they utilized a fantasy setting.Instead they tried to make an all CGI Aliens set in the future. It had no ties to the FF universe. It would definitely had done better business if it had.RE on the other hand has many elements from the series of videogames,it's not an abrupt departure.

Besides the characters and story, which are all original with regards to the RE universe, all the other familiar element of the series and novels are in place.FF did not contain anything whatsoever from the series, what a big mistake,no matter how nice it looked,it was the Halloween 3 of videogame movie translations.

I don't see only fans flocking to RE,i see people looking for an entertaining action film warming up to this, but there's no doubt, the fans, and there are many, will be the majority of the audience.I can see good word of mouth helping tremendously, and there is nothing else out there like, except for Blade 2 the following week, but that's a more of the same cash in sequel, and the first one was overrated.Plus RE is about much more than Vampires, there's so much going on,from what i've seen.

I don't see why the legion of fans is considered a cult,i would call it a Brotherhood/Sisterhood of admirers of one of the most entertaining, intriguing, exciting, creepy, and challenging vidgame series ever created. The series channels the spirit of all those classic zombie films of yesteryear, and horror films in general.

If i was'nt working thursday night,i would be camped out in front of the entrance to Broadway Mall or Sony Raceway theaters, depends which one will show it in SDDS.As it is i'll just catch some zzz's FRimorning and go to the 7 oclock showing with my bro.

Wait a minute, who said RE was an imitation of Tomb Raider,if i remember correctly RE was released first or around the same time,so it's silly that it copied TR in anyway.Plus the games could not have been more different with regards to graphics, setting, control, and strategy.I ask you this, what series is still going strong to this day and converting fans constantly.RE of course, the TR vidgame series is just about dead, but RE is just keeps on rolling, look at the new release for RE 0 in Japan,i think the preorder is already sold out,or close to it.Then there will be a remake of the first game on the Gamecube, and ports of 2 and 3.

The series could'nt be anymore popular, right up there with FF,probably even more so,in a popular and sales sense. And i think you may be mistaken,RE has sold more copies than TR,the series as a whole, and like i said it's popularity just continues to grow.

TR is just a curiosity now,RE is an obsession that gets better with time.

Jolie, really what did she do before that, she was'nt that popular, until TR was released,a mild box office draw at best. And TR was horrendous, what a joke that film was,but then again besides the first game, the series is not on the same level as RE.

Also,i heard RE only cost 40 mil to make, the IMDB number may include marketing and distribution costs, but i've heard the actual production is only 40 mil. They can make that up easily. You'll see,RE is going to surprise alot of people, and if it does'nt come close to my prediction,i'll eat crow.

You can't compare this to other so called vidgame films it's a unique creation.Wing Commander was just a SW ripoff,Mortal Kombat was just a one dimensional fighting game,Super Mario does not translate to the big screen, and Street Fighter, well, see above about Mortal Kombat.

Frost, hang in there, one month is not a long time too wait, even though i have to wait 2 more days and i can't take it,it'll be out soon enough over there. It does'nt make any sense,Constantin Films is a German/British production company,it should came out over there first,or at least the same time.Ah,that's Sony for you.

The T-Virus viral compound is almost ready to be unleashed on the entire civilized world.

T-minus 2 days, just about time for the special forces detachment of RPD,the S.T.A.R.S,to saddle up,and warm it up.

Here are my final predictions for this weekend's new wide releases:

1. ICE AGE - A huge but less-than-blockbuster opening. The reviews so far have been favorable but not ecstatic. 20th Century Fox has yet to prove itself as a formidable box-office contender in the animation department. Still, it's the only animated film out there. RETURN TO NEVERLAND is on the way out. THE TIME MACHINE is its primary competition for the family audience, but that movie is only moderately successful. It's also opening very wide (3315 screens) and the marketing has been robust. I'm sticking to my original prediction of $35 million.

2. SHOWTIME - With a running time of 90 minutes and playing wider (2917 screens) than the initial estimate, this promises to open bigger than I first predicted. The reviews are going to be RUSH HOUR like: Critics will show disdain or indifference but general audiences will embrace it. Its crossover appeal is also the widest of the new releases. Families, teens, African-americans and even women can enjoy it. Last but not least, audiences will find the De Niro-Murphy combination irresistable. I see an opening of $30 million.

3. RESIDENT EVIL(2528 screens) - It has several hurdles to overcome. The R-rating will restrict a good number of its target audience (many will be forced to buy either ICE AGE or SHOWTIME tickets to sneak in to see it). Milla Jovovich may be a hot babe but she's no Angelina Jolie in the talent and b.o. department. The reviews have been generally unfavorable. Its target audience may not listen to reviews but it needs to appeal to a wider audience to be a huge hit. Multiple repeat viewings by dellamorte and Lazycouch notwithstanding, the movie should gross $13 million, at best.

Alot of people think ICE AGE will beat the compatation but i think different.

(1)SHOWTIME- Looks really funny and Deniro and Murphy look like a good team.$29 million.
(2)ICE AGE- Animation is being over done but kids will still like this.$22 million.
(3)RESIDENT EVIL- Men will like it but women will not. Violance and hot women, what's not to like.$17.5 million.
(4)TIME MACHINE- Did good the first week evan though it didn't get good ratings.$14 million.
(5)WE WERE SOLDIERS- Great movie thats doing well so far.$10 million.
(6)ALL ABOUT THE BENJAMINS- Funny movie thats doing alright.$7.2 million.
(7)40 DAYS AND 40 NIGHTS- Should have made more money because this is a funny movie.$5.5 million.
(8)JOHN Q-Really good acting and an overall good movie that should have made more money.$4.4 million.
(9)RETURN TO NEVERLAND- Dont know why this movie made so much money but it has done well for a cartoon.$3 million.
(10)DRAGONFLY- Didn't make alot of a money but still did aright for the ratings it got.$2.2 million.

Hah Hah,everyone underestimated Resident Evil,i'm busting at the seams.I thought it would do a little better, but an opening weekend of almost 20 million is excellent,it just may pick up that all important steam i reffered to with good word of mouth.

The great thing is that i saw not only teenagers at the theater, there were older people going to see RE too, that's great.Men and Woman in their 30's 40's 50's and some who looked like they were in their 60's.The best part is that i was just about right with regards to the tired buddy cop genre with boring established actors(Deniro,Murphy),that's a pathetic opening for that film. Some people were way off on their prediction of that film(29 mil plus),what were they thinking?

Yes RE did beat the combo of Murphy and Deniro,i'm so giddy right now, you'll see it could just about hit the 100 million mark in about a month.

Good luck, dellamorte. I see a huge drop because of BLADE 2, which has the same target audience as RESIDENT EVIL's. I can guarantee you right now. It won't reach $100 million. $60 million, at best.
