Day Of The Triffids by John Wyndham

I'm just back from holiday and as usual managed to get caught up slightly with my reading (never seem to find the time when i'm not on holiday). After getting through a trashy (and thoroughly enjoyable) horror novel by Brian Lumley called Demogorgan I picked up a copy of Day Of The Triffids by John Wyndham. I've been meaning to read it for years as i'm a big Simon Clark fan and a couple of years ago with the permission of the Wyndham estate he published a sequel called Night Of The Triffids (i'll be reading this just shortly).

Anyway...Day Of The Triffids proved to be the best book i've read in a long time and probably the third or fourth best apocalyptic novel i've ever read (a genre that i'm drawn to). I'm now thinking about investing in the DVD of the BBC adaptation that was originally televised in the early eighties. I do remember seeing it back then but i'm a bit hesitant and was hoping someone could confirm both it's worth and whether it tampers in any way with the original story? I would imagine with the BBC being involved it would have been adapted with the utmost respect but any advice would be appreciated.

And if anyone has read the book i'd be happy if they could share their opinions. Also if anyone has read any other Wyndham novels i'd appreciate it if they could throw some recommendations at me.

Yeah...there are a few. Try these.

Blood Crazy by Simon Clark
King Blood by Simon Clark
Stranger by Simon Clark
The Rising by Brian Keene
City Of The Dead by Brian Keene
The Conqueror Worms by Brian Keene (haven't read this one yet but it sounds damn good)
Chasm by Stephen Laws
I Am Legend by Richard Matheson
I haven't read them but F. Paul Wilson's The Adversary Cycle of books that begins with The Keep seems to build towards an apocalyptic situation. I'm trying to get a hold of them all but they are difficult to track down in the UK.
Oh...and if you like your comics then I would hearily recommend you check out The Walking Dead by Robert Kirkman.

Intriguing book. I also watched the BBC TV series in Grade 10. It's a cross between "The War of the Worlds" and "28 Days Later...". Those of you who have read it will know what I mean with that second example.

But it's an interesting social commentary that the book made.
