Books about zombies?

Yeah, so I'm really on a zombie kick right now. I got Max Brook's new book (World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War) for Christmas, and although I haven't had time to read it much lately, I'm absolutely loving it right now. I also started playing Resident Evil 3 and Code Veronica again because it's been ages since I last played those games (that god damn Nemesis!). Anyway, what's some other good zombie lore to read? I've already got The Zombie Survival Guide (as soon as I finish World War Z, I'm gonna give that one another read). Comics are fine, too (I wish I could find the old comics based on the first Resident Evil game I had, because they were fucking badass).

The Walking Dead is a monthly black and white comic, published by Image Comics beginning in 2003. The comic was created by writer Robert Kirkman and artist Tony Moore and chronicles the travails of a group of people trying to survive in a world overrun by zombies.

its really good,if you liked flicks like dawn of the dead

Sounds awesome. I'll definitely check it out. I haven't read a good graphic novel in a while.

Anita Blake: Vampire Hunter books she raises zombies for a living.

The Walking Dead is indeed awesome. Don't miss it. There's 5 trade paperback collections out now, so luckily you don't have to go tracking down single issues. I believe the comic's release has been in a bit of a slump due to Robert Kirkman working on other projects so the trades have caught up to the single issue releases. It may be a while before we see volume 6, sadly.

For books, you may also want to look into Book of the Dead - The Complete History of Zombie Cinema by Jamie Russell. I haven't read my copy yet, so I can't comment on it too much, but I've flipped though it and it contains a ton of information. It seems to cover all phases of zombie movies and even has a complete (or close to, who knows...) zombie filmography with descriptions for every movie. There's also lot of excellent photos and even a bunch of colour pages as well with some full page movie poster art. Very nice.

I haven't ready my copy of World War Z yet either. I'm planning on reading that when I finish up the book I'm currently on.

I was under the impression that the 6th trade is being released in the next month or so.

Yeah, I think it's street date is (was?) Feb 28th.

Book #5 encountered a few delays though due to the last issue that was to be collected in it not being finished on time, or so I was told. It was released 10 months after book #4.

I don't follow the single releases, so I don't know the exact release schedule, or what's been released and what hasn't, but if book #6 is to be released at the end of Feb, that's only 5 months after #5. It should be collecting 6 issues (#31-36) and assuming they were released monthly, and on time, we're still one month short.

Hopefully the huge delay between books #4 and #5 was just because Kirkman was too busy with Marvel Zombies and #6 is just around the corner, but I'm personally expecting at least a month delay.

I'm so glad that I got into this series so close to the release of the 6th soft cover because if I had to wait a long time to find out what happens after the way the story is left off in 5, I think I'd rip my hair out.

I'm definitely going to read "The Serpent And The Rainbow", which deals with actual zombies in Haiti. Should be good.

Psychocandy 02-13-2007 02:56 PM

Monster Island...brilliant!!!

I did not think it was possible but that has completily ensured that I will never watch that movie or read the book.

Zombie reading matter that I've worked my way through in the past couple of years, and more imortantly, have really enjoyed include:

World War Z by Max Brooks
The Rising and City of the Dead by Brian Keene
The Walking Dead comic book series
Cell by Stephen King (yeah, yeah, not strictly zombies, but close enough for me :) )
Monster Island and Monster Nation by David Wellington
28 Days Later : Aftermath graphic novel (again, I know, not strictly zombies, yadda, yaddam yadda)

What about the S.D. Perry "Resident Evil" adaptations? They're total schlock but lots of fun to read.

I'm reading "City Of The Dead" right now. It's Perry's novelization of Resident Evil 2.

Schlocky doesn't even begin to describe it.

But you have to agree they're entertaining. You can devour them in one sitting.

Yeah, they are good. I'll admit that much.

Actually they're good inspiration for some of the stuff I'm working on.

ZMoney08 02-08-2008 06:02 PM

Dead City is pretty good.

NuclearMisfit 02-08-2008 10:07 PM

Day by Day Apocolypse is a fantastic read if you manage to find this book at your bookstore, I suggest you pick it up.

AdNauseum 02-11-2008 11:41 AM

I was truly shocked by how good World War Z was.

i picked up City of the Dead and enjoyed it enough to track down the rest of the serise and find them entertaining and a decent adaption of video games that have tons of plot holes in them to begin with :D

Oddly enough i found that Caliban Cove and Underworld, the 2 books not based on any of the games to be the best ones folowed closely by CotD and Nemesis.

Walking Dead is really good as well but just so you know its not necessarily about the Zombies in that book and more about the ppl trtying to keep things together. But this is good cause it makes it harder to over use the Zombie attack angle so it doesn't get old fast.

MidnightAngel 02-13-2008 08:10 PM

Not the typical books about zombies but loosely based on the living dead theme.
