Best Start to a film.
I was watching Trainspotting the other day and I'm still exhilirated and drawn into the film from the very beginning as Renton races down the street to the beats of Lust for Life and we're straight into the "Choose Life" speech - fantastic!

What other films have great beginnings to you think? They could be utterly crap films, but have a fantastic opening.

These come to mind for me:

The Matrix
Demolition Man
Blade Runner
The Dark Knight

*to be honest most superhero films have pretty good starts.

I'm sure there are others, but the above come to mind right now.

The opening scene for Drive is pretty phenomenal.

And the first few minutes of Melancholia is the best part of the film (not that the rest is bad)

jaw2929 03-22-2012 02:04 PM

First thing that came to my mind was these two:

28 Weeks Later (Robert Carlyle's opening scene)

Dawn of the Dead 2004 (great opening scene)

Bourne101 03-22-2012 02:18 PM

You are fucking in that movie in the first scene.

Others include:

Pulp Fiction
A Clockwork Orange
The Godfather
Saving Private Ryan
The Shining

The Assassination of Jesse James Opening

Along Came a Spider comes to mind. That car hanging off the clif. Best scene in the whole damn movie.

I always loved the first scene, pre-credits scene in Bad Boys (the 1995 Michael Bay one). Awesome scene.

outsyder 03-22-2012 07:41 PM

Can't believe I'm the first to mention Touch of Evil.

oh-dae-su 03-22-2012 07:56 PM

Since Hot Fuzz isn't displayed until the end, I guess the whole movie is the opening. :D

Matchbox225 03-22-2012 11:15 PM

Who Framed Roger Rabbit?
The Social Network
When A Stranger Calls
Werckmester Harmonies

That's all I can think of for now. I'll add more later if I think of any.

Some personal faves have already been mentioned.

This one comes to mind:

The Lethal Weapon sequels always made it a point to have a cool action scene to start the film. "Grab the cat."

X2 is the one I first thought of.

Can't believe I forgot 28 Week's Later. Opening scene is fantastic! Robert Carlyle isn't in enough films!

Once Upon a Time in the West - the opening tension leading up to the first shootout.

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (74) - the narration and text combo.

Cop No. 633 03-24-2012 01:52 PM

Children of Men - Grabbed me by the balls in the theater.

No Country for Old Men - The narration followed by our introduction to Anton Chigurh. It's just so well done.

8 1/2 - A visually excellent sequence that introduces us to the mind of Guido.

Narc - Grabs you by the balls.

Sunset Blvd - Iconic, simple, just perfect.

Dr. Strangelove - The opening titles set the entire tone of the film. The playful symbolism, the handwritten titles, the music...

And I think this opening is just a lot of fun:

Haven't seen Snake Eyes on these lists.

I can't believe I forgot Jaws. I think thaat is my favourite opening.

Wasn't the start of The Wild Bunch a fight between red ants and a scorpion?

Part of it. Kids put a scorpion or two into a pile of red ants as the Bunch ride past them heading into town.

The Rundown is another movie with a really awesome opening scene!

bonnielaurel 03-25-2012 10:56 AM

Ryan's Daughter: sea, umbrella, village idiot.
Vertigo: dizzy imagery.

Mr.Friendly108 03-27-2012 07:59 PM

Not sure whether it has been mentioned or not, but the opening to From Dusk till Dawn is pretty great.

SL Dubbs 04-12-2012 02:18 PM

American History X

Joe90 04-13-2012 06:52 AM

Opening scene of Inglourious Basterds. Absolutely Brilliant. The rest of the movie didnt live up to it but that was brilliant.

Hucksta G 04-13-2012 07:49 PM

Can't believe Super Troopers hasn't been mentioned!! :D

Chronos767 04-14-2012 04:15 PM

The opening to once upon a time in the west is an excellent and attention grabbing opening which slowly builds tension and atmosphere.

Also, the beginning off a clockwork orange thrusts us into the nightmarish dystopian hell without any build up or warning. This makes the film alot more disturbing on the whole.

The Start to Drive was really good.

Mr. Guiltless 12-01-2012 04:34 PM

Audrey Rose(1977) has the coolest opening imo. So eerie. Too bad it falters at the end.

The Shining
Femme Fatale
Once Upon A Time In The West
Shallow Grave
When A Stranger Calls(1979)
Lord Of The Rings(all 3 films)

blknge89 12-05-2012 11:32 PM
