Favourite Albums of 2012
Not quite to the end of the year, but we're getting there. This is my top ten of the year at the moment (no particular order):
Grizzly Bear - Shields Animal Collective - Centipede Hz Liars - WIXIW My Bloody Valentine - EP's 1988-1991 (I suppose this is cheating, as it's old material re-released, but this is my list and I'll do as I wish) Beach House - Bloom Grimes - Visions Sleigh Bells - Reign of Terror Alamaailman Vasarat - Valta Purity Ring - Shrines Daniel Rossen - Silent Hour/Golden Mile |
so far the best album of the year for me has been:
Serj Tankian: Harakiri but Oct 9 sees the release of: Between The Buried & Me: The Parallax II: Future Sequence and that will surely be the best album of the year, of the past 2 years, pry the best album since: Between The Buried & Me: The Parallax: Hypersleep Dialogues! |
Still a lot of great stuff coming out and stuff to catch up on but so far I've really liked
Coexist - The xx Shrines - Purity Ring The Seer - Swans Strange Weekend - Porcelain Raft Give You the Ghost - Polica Gossamer - Passion Pit Celebration Rock - Japandroids Visions - Grimes Attack on Memory - Cloud Nothings Something - Chairlift Bloom - Beach House |
yeah it's way early for that topic but i'm a good sport ;)
So far ... Fear Factory - The Industrialist - favorite song : God Eater Ministry - Relapse - favorite song : Double Tap In This Moment - Blood - favorite song : Blood Serj Tankian - Harakiri - favorite song : Cornucopia The Agonist - Prisoners - not definitive song but so far i like Ideomotor As I Lay Dying got a new cd coming out tomorrow .... and i loved An Ocean Between Us The new Testament cd "Dark Roots of Earth" looks promising ... haven't heard it yet The latest Atari Teenage Riot and Skinny Puppy are labeled 2011 but i'm pretty sure both cds were released in 2012 I haven't listened to the whole latest Metric cd but "Youth Without Youth" is pretty catchy . I love it ! Canadian alt-rock FTW edit : fuck pop! |
So far I've really dug:
Bloom Beach House Shields Grizzly Bear Break it Yourself Andrew Bird Coexist The xx Kill For Love Chromatics channel ORANGE Frank Ocean Swing Lo Magellan Dirty Projectors |
Dirtyfrog, I take offense to you declaring that pop fuck [itself].
Gosh, I really want to like that Frank Ocean album more, but there's a lot of filler and not much cohesion. Some of the songs feel unfinished too. "Pyramids" and "Bad Religion" are still among my most-played. Jessie Ware is in a similar camp. Her memorable songs dominate my iTunes most-played or the year. I cannot turn on the G.O.O.D Music compilation without some scrub yapping "Ric Flair!" into my ear, so if anyone knows of any Kanye-only (R. Kelly too) versions floating around...also, Jay-Z should've stayed retired if he's going to get all closet-Republican on us. Since I'm in a hating kind-of-mood, I wish A$AP Rocky would just release the damn album so we can begin the quick process of forgetting he existed. Sleigh Bells have released the worst album of the year, after the refreshing blast of "Treats". On-track for the year's most underrated: Animal Collective, maybe The xx (don't know the critical reaction entirely but I like it better than their debut), Deerhoof & Woods (who always make this list), Jens Lekman (although I'm still disappointed nothing on it approaches "Kortedala"), Dan Deacon (with the year's stupidest album title), Matthew Dear, Daughn Gibson, Lower Dens, and that phenomenal album by Julia Holter, which seems to be flying under-the-radar despite a BNM designation from the Fork, I don't know, it is too early and if I provide a list then I'm being a hypocrite. I still have high hopes for Flying Lotus, Grizzly Bear, Bat for Lashes, Titus Andronicus, Kendrick Lamar, Crystal Castles, Tame Impala, Emeralds, Lindstrøm, Andy Stott, Tim Hecker/Daniel Lopatin, and just in time for Christmas, Scott Walker. |

Cruisin' California is the worst piece of shit music i heard in a while. Dividing by Zero & The Future Is Now are great tho. Not original but they live up to the name :) Tayzlor : ok noted ... i still stand on my opinion tho. I like a lot of music and even the style i don't like i will still give respect to honest musicians. I'm sorry but pop is mostly about the team behind the act. I'd like to see the Wizard of Oz behind Rihanna. 1 thing tho , i give respect to Madonna (even if i'm not a fan ) .... seeing her play that Dimebag riff gave me a boner. |

I'm really enjoying Two Door Cinema Club's Beacon.

Red - Taylor Swift
|
Would like to add Flyleaf's new one "New Horizons" to my list. Damned solid album, however none of the songs on the disc stand out like an "I'm So Sick" or a song like "Again". But definitely listenable as a whole.
|
Adding Crystal Castles (III).

1. Deftones - Koi No Yokan
2. Storm Corrosion - Storm Corrosion 3. Between The Buried & Me - The Parallax II: Future Sequence 4. Crosses - ++ 5. Soundgarden - King Animal |

"I Love It" is definitely a top-ten song for me. Summer jam, etc.
Only thing I have left to listen to is Hecker/Lopatin, Memory Tapes, Big Boi, and, fuck, Scott Walker. If "Epizootics!" is indicative of anything forthcoming than I just don't know what. I'm debating whether or not to give Matthew Friedberger's latest batshit album concept a spin. I probably will, since I think he's unfairly maligned. I'll keep you posted! Not getting too excited about the "Sir Lucious" follow-up even though I haven't heard the singles. This year's disappointments: Memoryhouse, Micachu, The Tallest Man on Earth, everything Ty Segall, Purity Ring (singles band), Frank Ocean (despite the undeniable greatness of some of the tracks), Teengirl Fantasy, Matthew Dear, Jens Lekman, Titus Andronicus x 10 Favorite EPs: Serengeti, Times New Viking, Dum Dum Girls I also really love that Passion Pit album despite societal pressures saying no, it's uncool. The sentiments contained therein come for a genuine place, you know? |
Well my favourite cd at the moment is by Guy Sabastion

Deftones is a rare breed of group that changed their sound over the years and that i still follow. From the nu-metal roots of Adrenaline to the more experimental output of the eponymous album to the softer side of Saturday Night Wrist. The new album is definitively more rock than metal but i don't care because that's how i feel. 10/10 |

My final favorite CD of 2012
#1 - Deftones / Koi No Yokan http://wac.450f.edgecastcdn.net/8045...i-No-Yokan.jpg No contest here. This CD is more rock than their usual nu-metal foundation but it's only the culmination of always re-inventing themselves subtlety on every album. Metallica could take a lesson here. This band evolved as i did and as a day 1 fan , no band ever did this do me. Chino is on top of his game ... again. Basically , Deftones went from a band to a sound. Actually , unlike Metallica , they deserve the mainstream rock radio recognition they got ( more like Tool ). FAV TRACK : GRAPHIC NATURE #2 - Fear Factory / The Industrialist http://wac.450f.edgecastcdn.net/8045...rialist300.jpg The band who cannot get a break even with a cult status. Internal scuffle about musical direction left them disorganized and making shitty records ( Digimortal , Transgression ). Mechanize was a great comeback but i liked The Industrialist better even if they replaced Gene "The Atomic Clock" Hoglan on drum with a machine. Fear Factory is all Burton & Dino anyway and the concept rocks ! FAV TRACK: God Eater #3 - Grimes / Vision http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...lbum_cover.png Thought i was the only one who liked this CD but i guess a lot of Schmoes also do. Her blend of dubstep/electro/80s pop is mesmerizing. I guess the fact that Claire Boucher (aka Grimes) is a Montreal-born one woman musical machine helped me a bit in my judgement. FAV TRACK: Genesis #4 - Delerium / Music Box Opera http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/...500_AA300_.jpg Delerium caught my attention way back then. Semantic Space was a hell of a dark new age / ambiant industrial record ( still one of my favorite). Like Deftones , the band changed its sound over the years ... probably because Silence with Sarah McLaughlan was such a big hit. My main draw is the quality of the new female singers this time around ( Stef Lang , Nadina and Anna-Lynne Williams ) while keeping the sure-shot around ( Leigh Nash , Kirsty Thirsk and Jaël ) FAV TRACK : Light Your Light ( ft Jaël ) #5 - Serj Tankian / Harakiri http://cdn.songonlyrics.com/wp-conte...j-Tankian.jpeg Man , i miss SOAD. Just like RATM , this group burned out too fast. The solo project of Serj was OK til this record. The sound is very very close to what an actual SOAD record would have been and the political message hits you like a ton of brick. FAV TRACK : Cornucopia BONUS KUDOS Front Line Assembly - Airmech OST http://www.disturbiamagazine.com/wp-.../fla-09-02.jpg I didn't want to include this in my top 5 ( since it's basically the same people as Delerium ) but this CD is my 2012 equivalent of the Tron : Legacy soundtrack. Instead of a movie , it's for a videogame. I actually never played the game but i always slip this CD as my background music when i play Dead Island. This OST got the full pristine care package and when i listen to it , i mostly feel like lighting a cigar while sipping on a glass of cognac. Great achievement for a record 100% instrumental. Electronica Lounge with a dash of Dubstep .... simply awesome ! FAV TRACK : Arise |
