Very interesting thoughts JoBlo, a great review and you definitely mentioned some of my favorite highlights...please forgive the upcoming rambling response...but words cannot describe how I feel about this film, I mean, if I had to write a book titled "Why I Love Movies", "Boogie Nights" would have it's own chapter...

I must admit that I would be lying if I were to say that "Boogie Nights" is anything but a perfect movie, in my opinion...at the very least, it is a film that delivers everything I am looking for in a film... "true" and "real" drama, humor, inventive as well as old-school direction not to mention stylish camera work (16mm and otherwise), "action" (in more ways than one), great tunes, amazing ensemble acting (the old-timers and the fresh new talent as well), and most importantly, subject material that I dig...namely Sex, Drugs and Rock & Roll. Although, this film could have been about any dysfunctional group of people or any rise & fall success story, the 70's sex industry is certainly a vivid backdrop for this cinematic masterpiece...

You are absolutely right JoBlo, about the across the board "stellar sexual standout" performances. They all deliver...Mark Wahlberg, Julianne Moore, Melora Walters, Don Cheadle, John C. Reilly, Luis Guzman, Heather Graham, William H. Macy, Burt Reynolds, Philip Baker Hall, Alfred Molina, Thomas Jane, Philip Seymour Hoffman, etc...great call on the "nerd/groupie" performance by the way...speaking of which, I was "reading" the adult magazine "Gallery" recently, and there is a monthly spot for adult film stars' interviews, and they had interviewed "the blonde chick with the giant breast implants in the hot tub" (sequence where they are using videotape and the camera guy says "it's videotape...we just shoot and shoot and edit later" & "technically, licking the thong is good, but we want to see some passion" [quotes from memory, may not be word-for-word])...Anyways, "the blond chick" says that she and the other large-breasted brunette (in said hot tub) started hanging around a lot with Hoffman during the shoot, and that he is now a really good friend of theirs and was their favorite star on the entire shoot out of everybody...can you say "porn groupie"? Sounds like a mild case of the "Charlie Sheen Syndrome". (Note: when I say "their", the two chicks in the hot tub are "married" in real life and only work in solo videos or in lesbian scenes together...and who says love doesn't conquer all...)

Since you mention moving the camera around, that is also a big drawing point for me..."Boogie Nights" just feels so "cinematic", if you can dig what I'm sayin'...

You also mentioned my absolute favorite scene in the film...the "Rahad Jackson Drug Deal"...for so many reasons, two specifics are Alfred Molina (Rahad Jackson) and Thomas Jane (Todd Parker). The second "stars" commentary on the 2-disc set has John. C. Reilly and P.T. Anderson pointing out that the entire shooting of that scene in the unbearable smoke was just like watching the greatest hits of "The Alfred Molina Show" and from what I have seen (of the scene), I wholeheartedly agreed. They also absolutely say that Thomas Jane did his part in rehearsals like normal, but when the big moment came, he just snapped and was brilliant...I agree...by the way, you should see my Thomas Janeimpression... "We want what's in the goddamn master bedroom! Under the goddamn bed! In the fuckin' floor! In the Goddamn Fuckin' floor safe! That's all..." (I think I have most of the film memorized since I throw out random pieces of dialogue all the time from it.)

All I know is that if I was a director, I would want to be Paul Thomas Anderson...I mean, he get's final cut, creative freedom and most of Stanley Kubrick's types of extras...and he's only in his 20's...man...

Ok...Ok...I admit it...I'm fifteen inches......in my Adidas.
