I thought Randy being offed in Scream 2 was a fantastic and unexpected twist. A lot of people complain about his death, but then they also complain that the two latter films in the saga aren't 'daring' enough to kill off any of the main characters. Killing Randy in 2 made the following events with major characters - the car sequence and the chase through the film school - more unpredictable as the characters felt less 'safe'.
I wouldn't have minded if Dewey was killed off in 2. I think originally that was the intention but Craven/Williamson loved the character so much that they couldn't part with him.
