I think you're right, but for pretty much every book he wrote in the late 70s and throughout the 80s he was completely coked out of his mind to the point that he had to shove cotton balls up his nose so he didn't get blood on his typewriter. He wrote Misery right after IT, and Misery was essentially a metaphor for his coke addiction (with Annie representing coke).
