I don't understand how tanking is a bad thing. It happens in professional sports all the time. You do what's best for your team.
The goal is the system has to prevent it from being beneficial. If there is no incentive to do it, then no one will. Fix the system.
We'll catch China in the overall medals once track and field starts, but I gotta say, they have been amazing. A lot of people thought their 2008 performance was a bit of a fluke (host countries always do better) but they have some amazing athletes there.
EDIT: Erroneous, I think I know the answer to this, but what do you think about the 16 year old Chinese swimmer who won a couple golds by absolutely dominating? She swam the final leg of the 400M medley faster than Ryan Lochte in his gold medal race. I like to give people the benefit of the doubt, but man, something is very shady here...
