Lucas has long hinted that Episodes VII-IX dealt mostly with the next generation of Skywalkers, i.e. the children of Luke and Han & Leia. It would make little sense to me to continue episode numbering system if the central characters of these movies didn't have direct ties to the first 6 installments.

Lucas wasn't that bad. There were mistakes he made. But the Return of the Jedi scene in Jabba's Palace was the most interesting part of all Star Wars films.
Despite the fact that that whole adventure of rescuing Han was basically a side story that deviated from the trilogy's central story (i.e. overthrowing the Empire/the Jedi making their return)? : /
