Zhang Ziyi

Apologies if there has already been a thread created for Zhang but I've searched and can't find one.

For my money Zhang Ziyi isn't just the best chinese actress of her generation; she's one of the best; period.

Born February 9th 1979 Zhang Ziyi is the younger of two children.
Her education was at the Beijing dance academy where she specialised in folk dances and won a young dancer of the year competition in 1994.
On leaving the dance academy at 17 she applied to the China Central Drama College and in her second year there auditioned for a shampoo commercial that Zhang Yimou was making. She lost out on that job but, six months later, was cast in her first film; Yimou's The Road Home.
Her second film; Ang Lee's Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon brought her international attention and she's since compiled a distinguished CV and a reputation as one of the best Chinese actresses working.
Zhang is now two films into a Hollywood career with an eye candy role in Rush Hour 2 (in which she was the sole worthwhile thing) and an acclaimed, English language performance in Memoirs of a Geisha under her belt. However her next role is a Chinese one as The Emperess in Xiaogang Feng's Ye Yan, a loose adaptation of Hamlet.

Obviously it's a giant YAY from me. She's a formiddable acting talent (Look at House of Flying Daggers and 2046 for proof) and one of the most stunning natural beauties cinema has to offer (see above for proof)

She is pretty but her feet need help. Maybe like a transplant or something.

For the life of me, I will never be able to understand why a woman's feet are the deciding factor as to if they're sexy or not. What is all the fuss?

I started a Zhang thread a few years back, but I'm too lazy to go and dig it up so I'll just respond to this one.

I fucking loved her when she first broke out on screen in Zhang Yimou's 'The Road Home'. Her performance in that film was so natural and subtle that it instantly caught my eyes, and she continued to mesmerize me with a tour de force turn in Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, a role I personally felt should've earned her a Oscar for Best Supporting Actress.

But unfortunately, it just went downhill after those two great performances. Rush Hour 2 was awful and while she made for a great eye candy in that film, the role was so beneath her that it didn't give her a chance to bring anything memorable to the film, but that's not really a fault of her performance.

What I really disliked, however, was her turns in Hero and House of Flying Daggers. Sorry to fans of these two films, but I seriously 'em disliked both (and this is coming from a HUGE fan of Zhang Yimou) and Zhang's performances in them, which were completely bland and uninspired for the most part, and dreadfully overplayed during some of the big emotional scenes.

'2046' and 'Memoirs of a Geisha', however, were decent enough performances (though far from great) and helped raised my respect for her up a notch after 'Rush Hour 2', 'Hero', and 'Daggers', but I just think she has the potential to star in much better films and provide much better performances. It seems that her status as a bona fide star has clouded some of those genuine acting talents she showcased 5 years ago or so.

I'll give her a mild yay for now because she has still given more good performances than bad, but my opinion could change for the better or the worse, depending on how she improves (or not) as an actress.

To me, she's sort of a poor man's Gong Li (one of my all time favorite actresses, I'd urge anyone to check out To Live, Raise the Red Lantern, Ju Dou, & Red Sorghum, all of which are great examples of her talent............something that a film like 'Memoirs of a Geisha' does not showcase), but not nearly as good an actress and not nearly as beautiful either.

I actually think that she is more beautiful than Gong Li, and pretty much equal on talent. I think Zhang Ziyi has more screen presence, in fact, but maybe I'm just taken by her beauty. She is one of the most beautiful women who have ever graced the earth.

But about as big YAY as I can muster.

That's my dad's opinion as well, and most people I know do tend to think of her as more of an eye candy than Gong Li.

On the beauty part, I can understand (although I don't really think so ), but talent wise she's still a little bit green IMO. Give the gal a few more years, and she may become just as talented (if she makes the right decisions, that is).

Definitely a yay from me. Not only is she freakin' hot, but very talented also. Though her breakout performance in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon is still her best - she still comes out with interesting and/or entertaining movies.

One of the prettiest faces...ever

She's also one of the major reasons I grew interested in Asian Cinema. House of Flying Daggers is one of my favorite films, mainly because of her.
