80's Music Appreciation Thread

I'm not surprised that no one else has started one of these threads on here. But I'm glad to be the instigator.

Please no 80's haters as this is an appreciation thread.

So what songs really take you back to the 80's and put you there? Have your favorites from that decade changed or stayed the same? Try to post the more obscure works and give us some awesome blasts from the past!

Here's goes a great groove to start things off(wait for it):

Remember this 80's FM smash from Australian band Real Life?

Or how about this covered to death Matthew Wilder song from 1983:

Contrary to belief, Nena was NOT a one hit wonder; at least not in Germany. I like this song better than 99 Luftballoons:

How about this gem from Better Off Dead:

Another Australian masterpiece:

Here's a pretty forgotten love song from the 80's:

Another great 80's groove:

Remember when Ministry were New Wave?

And rounding it out for now is this great Alice Cooper homage to Jason Voorhees:

More to come later...........
Please add your own.

I completely love you for starting this thread. Seriously.

I listen to Real Life's "Send Me An Angel" almost every day, hahaha. I just love the moody dance songs. You seriously posted some awesome songs that not many people remember. I'm impressed! "Like To Get To Know You Well" - Hell yes! I have so many 80's movie soundtracks. It's sad that soundtracks aren't what they used to be, huh?

I also love:

Yaz (or Yazoo) - "Situation"

Tears For Fears - "Mad World"

Berlin - "No More Words"

Scandal - "Goodbye To You"

T-Pau - "Heart and Soul"

The Fixx - "One Thing Leads To Another"

Rachel Sweet - "Then He Kissed Me/Be My Baby"

Jermaine Stewart - "We Don't Have To Take Our Clothes Off"

Pat Benatar - "Invincible"

E.G. Daily - "One Way Love"

Rupert Hine - With One Look"

Teena Marie - "Lovergirl"

Agh...there are so so many more that I will probably end up listing soon, haha.

And I love you for loving it. The 80's were a constant party. If I was the age I'm at now- then, I probably would've lived a short and very happy life.

In the words of David Lee Roth, "The clothes SMILED and the music SMILED."

And in the words of Randy The Ramm(The Wrestler), "90's sucked".

I have so many 80's movie soundtracks. It's sad that soundtracks aren't what they used to be, huh?
Yeah. Not even close. I just love these two from The Breakfast Club:

We Are Not Alone by Karla DeVito

Wang Chung - Fire In The Twilight

and also The Goonies

Cyndi Lauper - Goonies R Good Enough

The Karate Kid
Bananarama - Cruel Summer("This school SUCKS man! It SUCKS!!!") lol

Bonnie Tyler - Holding Out For A Hero

Yeah we could probably go on and on with just the soundtracks!

I also love:

Tears For Fears - "Mad World"

Berlin - "No More Words"

Scandal - "Goodbye To You"

T-Pau - "Heart and Soul"

The Fixx - "One Thing Leads To Another"

Pat Benatar - "Invincible"

E.G. Daily - "One Way Love"

Teena Marie - "Lovergirl"
Yeah, I was originally gonna throw some Patty Smyth in there and "Goodbye To You" was the song. Good call. Same thing with Teena Marie's "Lovergirl".
Early Tears For Fears is GREAT! I consider The Hurting to be an even better album than the chart topping Songs From The Big Chair. Pale Shelter is my favorite song by them. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KTn4o...A739E76829C43A
T'Pau's "Heart & Soul"- another good call.

I absolutely love Liz Daily, Berlin, The Fixx, and especially Pat Benatar.
Great picks!

Here is some other overlooked 80's radio fanfare:

Robert Plant - Big Log

Expose - Come Go With Me

Rod Stewart - Young Turks[E.G. DAILY IS IN THE VIDEO!]

Belinda Carlisle - Circle In The Sand

Julian Lennon - Too Late For Goodbyes

Haha! "Holding Out For a Hero" is such an epic song. That entire soundtrack is loaded with great tunes. I used to adore Belinda Carlisle! "Heaven Is A Place on Earth" is one of those songs that really reconnects me with my childhood. Nice picks!

And in the words of Randy The Ramm(The Wrestler), "90's sucked".
I love that scene.
'The Ram': "Then that Cobain pussy had to come around & ruin it all."
Cassidy: "Like theres something wrong with just wanting to have a good time?"

That cracked me up.

Here are some more:

REM - "Stand"
(Michael Stipe was so handsome when he was young!)

Michael Penn - "No Myth" (It's on a fan-made Stargate video)

Laura Branigan - "Self Control"

Loverboy - "Turn Me Loose"

Benny Mardones - "Into the Night"

I also can't forget these awesomely bad videos:

Moon Ray - "Comanchero"

Baltimora - "Tarzan Boy"

As a Canadian, I feel somewhat obligated to mention The Safety Dance, which is just an awesome song no matter how you look at it.

Lol Yeah. I had forgotten how funny those videos are. Great picks! Laura Branigan's "Self Control" is one of my faves! I remember when that song was on the radio nonstop.

Some more 80's faves:

I remember when this played on Friday Night Videos nonstop:

Billy Idol - Eyes Without A Face

And this song was on Casey Kasam's Countdown forever:

Wham! - Everything She Wants

Billy Ocean - Caribbean Queen

Kraftwerk - The Model

Huey Lewis & The News - Heart & Soul

Marillion - Kayleigh(I prefer this version over the music video for the full length guitar solo)

Murray Head - One Night In Bangkok(I remember going to every Crazy Eddie and Sam Goody looking for this song in the 80's) lol

Samantha Fox - Touch Me

Oran "Juice" Jones - The Rain

Siouxsie And The Banshees - Cities In Dust

80s music is a strange era. In the 90s , i was saying it was a complete crappy decade. Early 2000's , i had totally forgot about it. Now , i can't stop checking it out because of all the memories it brings back.

At 36 , i'm pretty much a child of the 80s and i remember a lot. Sure it had really aweful things going on : spraynet , shoulder pads , fluo fashion , bad early technology , etc . But on the good side : it was bright , innovative , risk-taking and carefree.

It had a lot of one-hit wonders too ... those are my fav ( fav being a word for the ones i remember the most lol )

Information Society - What's on your mind

Dead or Alive - You spin me right round

Rockwell - Somebody's watching over me .. yes its MJ singing the back vocals!

Falco - Rock me Amadeus ... it's in german , can't figure out what the song is about but it's probably why i like Rammstein nowadays

Opus - Life is Life .. this is bad , yet i can't forget it ever existed ... someone cut my wrist plz !

Toni Basil - Mickey

Herbie Hancock - Rock it .. srsly dunno why this tune was a 1-hit wonder , don't get me wrong it's pretty good , just not mainstream ( no vocal , lotsa scratch) ... and Herbie is still doing doing music now but he's into jazz

yet for all these songs i posted , i can't deny that i switched to metal in the late 80's

Megadeth - Wake up dead

Suicidal Tendencies - How will i laugh tomorrow ... this song litterally saved my life

Queensryche - I don't believe in love ... prolly the greatest concept album ever made ! ( i still have the VHS edition from which this video is taken )

Lita Ford & Ozzy Osbourne - Close my eyes forever .... oooh sexy Lita ! my biggest wet dream ... and those jeans honestly , best duo ballad ever.

Ratt - Round & Round ... you know it's a classic when Supernatural plays you !

WASP - Fuck like a beast ... caught this one late but it defined what the RCMP was all about !

Atrocity are raping the 80's

Send me an angel Original by Real Life

Here Comes The Rain Again Original by Eurythmics

Smalltown Boys Original by Bronski Beats

People are people Original by Depeche Mode

Shout Original by Tears For Fear

I'm sitting on the fence here ... original were good enough. All songs have better cover but they still have balls to do it metal.

I LOVE the 80s. Especially the first half (80-85). Ultravox is my favorite band of that era.

Ultravox-Dancing with Tears in my Eyes

Ultravox-Rage In Eden

Ultravox-I Remember (Death In The Afternoon)

Ultravox-When The Scream Subsides

Ultravox-Visions In Blue

Ultravox-The Song (We Go)

Okay, I'll stop there. That just barely scratches the surface of their greatness.

Here are some other great ones from the 80s...

Peter Godwin-Images of Heaven

Spandau Ballet-To Cut A Long Story Short

The Cure-The Same Deep Water As You

The Cure-Just Like Heaven

Depeche Mode-Stripped

Depeche Mode-A Question of Lust

I could post so many more, but I think I've posted more than enough already so I'll leave it at this...

Is Devin here?

Billy Idol’s Cradle of Love.

I asked someone if they remembered what song had a hot blonde girl named Devin an no one could remember. It was making me crazy.

My vote for the most criminally underrated song of the '80s:

Burning Sensations - "Belly of the Whale" (1983); an intriguing mixture of punk, new wave, and Caribbean:

Ah, the '80s -- the last decade in which songwriters still actually cared about writing good melodies and not trying to build a new song around other people's songs and there wasn't a single whiny-voiced singer to be found.
