The new albums I've heard this year have been pretty strong. These are the ones I've really enjoyed, though it hasn't reached 10 yet:

Black Keys - Brothers
Wolf Parade - Expo 86
Ted Leo and the Pharmacists - Brutalist Bricks
Drive-By Truckers - The Big To Do
Gaslight Anthem - American Slang
Arcade Fire - The Suburbs
Glory Glory Man United - Zombies!
Gorillaz - Plastic Beach

I wish I liked The Hold Steady's "Heaven is Whenever" more. They've been so solid with their past releases that it's unfortunate when they put out even a mediocre effort like this.

I'm not going to bother putting these in order. Too difficult. So i'll just list the albums that meant a lot to me this year and have done with it.

The National - High Violet

An album that pretty much took over my life for a number of months and still continues to give me pleasure. Seeing them live a couple of weeks ago was the culmination of many months of building excitement. And they didn't let me down.

Standout tracks for me were - Afraid Of Everyone, Bloodbuzz Ohio, England

The Walkmen - Lisbon

A number of years ago I played the hell out of The Walkmen's Bows & Arrows album (The Rat hooked me in like big juicy salmon). I dabbled in the albums between Bows & Arrows and Lisbon but none of them really took. Lisbon was immediate and has just kept growing in my estimation throughout the year.

Standout Tracks - Angela Surf City (a big adrenalin rush of a song), Blue As Your Blood, Torch Song

Grinderman - Grinderman II

This album at first sounded like it was made by a bunch of neanderthal idiot savants but that's just a mask because we all know Nick and his crew of likeminded misfits are genii of the highest order. An album made up of crunching excursions into the deeper recesses of Mr. Cave's messed up libido. Marvelous.

Standout Tracks - Worm Tamer, When My Baby Comes (disturbing), Halls Of Montezuma (a big fucking pop song no less)

The Phantom Band - The Wants

An album so full of ideas that it's a wonder it wasn't an incoherent mess. Instead it's a masterpiece that in a world the majority of people had some fucking taste would have propelled The Phantom Band into the big league and out of the tiny little venues they have been playing. For an album made up of only nine songs...this is bloody epic. If you haven't heard this...fix it.

Standout Tracks - The None Of One, Mr Natural, Into The Corn

Kanye West - My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy

This one kind of came out of nowhere for me. I try to give every highly praised album at least a cursory listen and in truth most don't make the grade. I used to be a big hip-hop/rap fan years ago but I kind of wandered away from the genre. But this album was pretty much immediate and has only grown in stature in the weeks since I first heard it. Kanye is a fucking mental case. No doubt. But he's a talented mental case.

Standout tracks - Runaway, Hell Of A Life, Lost In The World

I'll be adding more to this list later. But these were the five that instantly popped into my head.

Yeasayer - Odd Blood
Titus Andronicus - The Monitor
M.I.A - Maya
Sam Amidon - I See the Sign

Sufjan Stevens - The Age of Adz

Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti - Before Today
Brian Eno - Small Craft on a Milk Sea
Four Tet - There is Love in You
Grinderman - Grinderman II
Laura Marling - I Speak Because I Can
LCD Soundsystem - This is Happening
The Radio Dept. - Clinging to a Scheme
Sunset - Loveshines But the Moon is Shining Too
Warpaint - The Fool

That a Sufjan Stevens album ended up being my favorite album of the year is pretty unexpected but in truth it's the album that most often surprised, excited, and interested me. I've been pretty middling on Stevens for as long as he's made music, but this time around he put together some densely composed work with more intrigue and emotion than I ever expected from him, and it's certainly the album this year that spurred to stop whatever I was doing and listen up most often. I know a number of people including die hard Stevens fans really dislike this album and are rejecting it but while they're abandoning ship, I'm climbing on board.
