Miss Bala played for the first time in public theaters in the U.S. on January 20th, 2012.

Just so you know magjournal, you can edit your lists instead of reposting each minor change separately and that is the preferred method for updating.

Sorry, lol. I try to update as infrequently as possible so as not to flood the thread or anything. I really only update like once a month and only if there are substantial changes to my list.

How can you have a best films of 2012 thread that is first posted in 2011? That is cheating. What if I were to post a best of 2014, 2015, 2016, etc...threads today. Then every other best of the year thread for those years would be closed? That's ridiculous. I think this is the thread that should have been closed and my thread should have remained open.

Disappointments
Moonrise Kingdom
Holy Motors

Movies I'll see soon regardless of what's happening in the world:
Compliance
The House That I Live In
Amour
This Is Not a Film
The Comedy
Cosmopolis [still my most-anticipated pure 2012 release]

Exhilirating but haven't the foggiest as to what to Think
Killer Joe

The only movie I saw this year in which I possess pure vitriol
Marvel's The Avengers

Started but could not finish but will finish even though I'll hate it
Beasts of the Southern Wild

I won't have time to watch films soon so I'll have to catch Argo, Lincoln, Zero Dark Thirty, and Django Unchained on DVD.

01. The Turin Horse
02. Once Upon a Time in Anatolia
03. Damsels in Distress
04. The Master
05. The Kid with a Bike

1. The Raid-This movie kicks all kinds of ass. Relentless from about 5 mins in. Yes it was straight action and yes there was zero character development. This was not a film with "lofty" goals, it was not trying to be Citizen Kane. It does one thing (action) and does it better than any movie has done anything this year, IMO.

2. Killer Joe-Sick, twisted, and trashy. If these are traits you like to see in characters in stories, movies, shows, etc. than this film is for you. It delivers the goods better than most. I personally loved it and like movies with characters like these (despicable and sympathetic at the same time). I have recommended it to people who say it was terrible and now wonder if there is something wrong with me, lol. Basically, you will either love it or hate it.

3. Flight-Mr Washington almost always makes great movies. He has had a couple clunkers but far more rarely than most A-lister's do. Whoever he has for a team, whoever picks his scripts, does an impeccable job. This is my favorite roll by him since Training Day. Here we get a fascinating character study of a man that is not only despicable and sympathetic, but also contemptible and admirable as well. In fact, this was previously 4 on my list but has moved up to 3. Another re-watch could vault it past Joe.

4. The Paperboy-This was the flick that came out of nowhere to blow me away this year, my surprise hit. Every year there are one or two movies that completely fly under the radar and hit me like a ton of lead. This was the one this year. Great cast, great characters, great story, and an overall quality film. I liked everything about this movie.

5a. Killing Them Softly-I would have to think back a moment to be sure but this very well may be the best gangster flick since Goodfellas. It sure felt that way to me shortly after watching it. The only downside, the only thing to me personally that keeps it from being a good as Scorcese's classics (Casino and Goodfellas) was Brad Pitt. I just don't believe him as a bad ass. But even with that, to me this was much better than the many recent attempts to make another great gangster flick (The Departed, American Gangster, Road To Perdition, Eastern Promises, Public Enemies, etc).

5b. Argo-It didn't break any new ground, it doesn't redefine the thriller genre, but it does do two things really well; thrill and entertain. Mr Affleck is rapidly becoming this generations Eastwood minus the "starring in sappy romantic movies". He is just as solid and reliable behind the camera as he is in front of it.

Honorable mentions, all very good movies just not quite top 5 material.

The Grey
Skyfall
Kill List
Goon
End of Watch
Jeff Who Lives at Home
Rock of Ages
Easy Money (Snabba cash)
This is 40

Also of note, I haven't seen The Master yet. So that will probably bump Argo down to the honorable list.

Favorite films of 2012 so far

Most...
Arbitrage
Killer Joe

Also enjoyed...
Chronicle
The Master

FYI, I haven't seen a lot of the films released at the end of the year yet. Django, Zero Dark, Argo, Avengers, Moon Rise, Silver Lining....were quality films but didn't make my list. I watched Dark Knight Rises twice and can comfortably say it wasn't one of the best films of 2012--too many issues with the screenplay for me and Bane's voice was screwed up.

Least Favorite Films of 2012
Red Lights
Wrath of the Titans
Men in Black III
