The Others Gone Baby Gone The Town American Splendor Jackass: The Movie The Descent Bad Santa Wedding Crashers Knocked Up Old School Superbad I like my movies gritty, edgy, and dark. I like movies that examine the darker side of human nature, the difficult choices reality forces upon us, and how people react to difficult times. And I prefer my films more grounded in reality. In fact, when they are based upon a true story I like them even more. Psycho's, serial killers, criminals, and generally psychotic people make the most interesting characters, IMO. And good people forced into incredibly difficult situations make for great stories. Gangster films are my favorite, Goodfellas being my favorite ever. I didn't put The Departed number one although it was my most anticipated of the 2000's. I was letdown by it. And I don't have City of God because it bored me to tears. Overall the 2000's have been very weak in the Gangster film department. Outside of History of Violence and Training Day they have all let me down. Hopefully the 3 upcoming mob movies buck that trend. I know I am missing some that I will probably add to the honorable mentions. But my top 10-15 are pretty much locked in. Last edited by rustysyringe; 09-03-2012 at 09:44 PM.. |

I can't really make lists. But one thing no one mentions in this thread is which films they think are the potential masterpieces so far coming out of this Millennium. I keep trying to think about what the films are I have seen that I think could really truly stick with me ten or twenty years down the road. For me I think it's perhaps something like
La Commune (Paris, 1871) Le Fabuleux Destin d'Amélie Poulain There Will Be Blood The White Ribbon Then there are a whole bunch of films I want to love but I feel I will forget. Things like Mysteries of Lisbon, A Serious Man, The Lives of Others, Children of Men, Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter... and Spring. Also, mega points to the next person that constructs a list and includes Fulltime Killer, far and away the best action movie so far this century. |

I think The Tree of Life will go down as a masterpiece and No Country For Old Men will probably be a classic many years down the line.

It's harder when it comes to movies that the general population would view as a classic though. The above movies are hardly populist choices. I don't see like a Shawshank Redemption anytime soon that's beloved by everybody. Quote:

There were a lot of films I considered listing before I realized I hadn't seen them in like seven years and more remember the feeling/reaction as opposed to the film's particulars. I guess that's an advantage of time; you get to re-experience films for the first time. On the third screening, I'm sure there is a significant mental imprint.
I don't think I'm being needlessly pedantic by excluding films from the year 2000. If I included that year, Tarr's Werckmeister Harmonies would be my number one. I want to rewatch the millennial output of Wong, Desplechin, Godard, Sokurov, Dardennes, Zhangke, Costa, Alonso, and Denis. And The New World and Children of Men. Also, as said elsewhere, 2007 was fantastic for cinema. 2009, though...my number one film from that year (A Serious Man) did not crack this twenty-five. I guess I was not looking hard enough. Take Shelter would've made this list if it ended in the doctor's office. 01. The Tree of Life [Terrence Malick] 02. Mulholland Drive [David Lynch] 03. Caché [Michael Haneke] 04. My Joy [Sergei Loznitsa] 05. Zodiac [David Fincher] 06. The Turin Horse [Béla Tarr] 07. 4 Months, 3 Weeks, 2 Days [Cristian Mungiu] 08. Che [Steven Soderbergh] 09. Syndromes and a Century [Apichatpong Weerasethakul] 10. Once Upon a Time in Anatolia [Nuri Bilge Ceylan] 11. Dogville [Lars von Trier] 12. I'm Not There [Todd Haynes] 13. Last Days [Gus Van Sant] 14. The Social Network [David Fincher] 15. The Holy Girl [Lucrecia Martel] 16. Silent Light [Carlos Reygadas] 17. Punch-Drunk Love [Paul Thomas Anderson] 18. Three Times [Hou Hsiao-hsien] 19. A Dangerous Method [David Cronenberg] 20. Import/Export [Ulrich Seidl] 21. The Royal Tenenbaums [Wes Anderson] 22. Meek's Cutoff [Kelly Reichardt] 23. The Headless Woman [Lucrecia Martel] 24. The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada [Tommy Lee Jones] 25. Goodbye, Dragon Inn [Tsai Ming-liang] |
