Boycott "Boycott Trending Horror"
(I origninally posted this in "Rants", but only one person responded. Thought I might get more action here.)
What is this "Boycott Trendy Horror" campaign? Give me a break. This is as useless as that over-impassioned "Quite Horror" vs "Splatterpunk" debate about horror fiction in the 80s. I am sick of people who think horror is no good unless it is one thing. Anything that is not Italian giallo or Fulci misogyny is crap. Anything that does not include a Classic Universal monster is crap. Anything that does include a Universal monster is crap. Any movie that isn't a bloodbath from frame one is crap. A budget? Crap. No budget? Crap. Plot? Acting? Coherency? Crap.
A true fan appreciates everything from Last Man on Earth to Zombie; from The Thing from Another World to John Carpenter's The Thing; from Black Sunday to Blair Witch; from The Haunting (original) to The Sixth Sense; from Nosferatu to Bram Stoker's Dracula; from Psycho to American Psycho; and yes, even everything from Texas Chainsaw Massacre to Scream. Horror should be inclusive, not exclusive. A movie ought to be judged on its own merits, not whether it has big stars or makes big bucks. "Trendy Horror" doesn't harm anything. Scream paved the way for the horror boom at the end of the last decade. Without it we might not have seen The Sixth Sense, Blair Witch, or American Psycho. Man cannot live on bread alone, and horror cannot survive on blood alone.
Broaden your horizons.
