Why, PinchMyDiscos, Brock, you forgot CHINESE GHOST STORY! And TAMPOPO! Sex & food, how can anyone not love a funny movie about sex & food? You hear that, young'uns? Yes, there are subtitles but you won't need to look at them when the director, the brilliant Juzo Itami, shows what can be done with a raw egg.

SLEUTH. It's been years since I've seen that one. Brilliant brilliant.

Dear god Brock! I mean it was a great list (though there was some movies to high or to low), but damn! How long did that take you?!?

Brock, I must assume that the order of the films wasn't exact. Some films were definitely too high and some too low.

Anyway, it was an impressive list, but where were all the foreign and silent films?

A film like Birth of a nation might have had a huge influence on filmmaking, but is it really one of the greatest silent films of all time? I don't think so...

Also there was a lack of foreign cinema in your list. I don't know how available foreign film are in states, but it was a bit sad that only about 1/10 or 1/15 of the films were outside USA...

Thanks for the feedback fellas...

...just remember that I did that list "stream-of-consciousness"-style in about an hour or so..."stream-of-conciousness" meaning "to brainstorm" or "off-the-top-of-my-head"...I mean, the films are in no particular order and the numbering is only there to keep track of how many films...that is why some may seem a bit high or low on my list...

These are only films that I really enjoyed...I mean, after I posted it I kept typing and have a little over 1000 films (films that I like) now...there are just so many great films out there...I have added lots more foreign films (ex: "Aguirre: Wrath Of God", "The Tin Drum") and some more silent films I enjoyed (ex: "The Kid", "Napolean")...thanks for the thought though fellas...

Admittedly, being an American, I do tend to list a lot of American Films, but that's what's great about this board...diversity...good call on those films NomoPutzy I will definitely have to add Chinese Ghost Story to my TOP 5000 OF THE CENTURY...often when I list or talk about foreign, silent, etc...nobody shows any interest...too bad.

Anybody can make one of these lists, it's really no big deal, when all you watch is films and all you talk about is films and when you sleep, you dream about films and you eat food from a certain film and you drink when the characters drink and you fuck how the characters ...um...er...well, you catch my drift...Tyler Durden rubber gloves monkey-love style...(sly smirk)...more later...

(Note: ya know, sometimes I wonder just how many films I have seen, I mean I remember watching films when I was a toddler...damn...the good ol' days...)

#161 THE CHOCOLATE WAR
#429 S.F.W.

And here I thought I was the only one who has seen flicks like the two above. You chose an interesting five hundred.

Question: # 498 BUSTIN' LOOSE wouldn't happen to be that movie with Richard Pryor and a bus-load of disturbed kids would it? Just wondering. Admittedly, I always get sucked into the version with Richard Pryor when it is on.

You also had three flicks that had great performances by three actors that seem to have no trouble getting work:

#250 PERMANENT MIDNIGHT--Ben Stiller
#499 SLC PUNK--Matthew Lillard
#176 THE BASKETBALL DIARIES--Leonardo DiCaprio

#7 MY LIFE AS A DOG--Man, I love that movie!

Raena..."The Chocolate War" was what got me through a year of boarding school...man, I mean, it's like a David Mamet flick for young confused kids...the writing is superb, the direction is magnificent and the actors are simply kick-ass...It's like every "School Ties"-style film gone perfect...I love it...

Yes, that was the Pryor/Busdriver flick. I tried to fit in every Richard Pryor flick I could remember, I just love the guy, even though he's all messed up now...I only left off "Jo Jo Dancer"...which is the autobiographical flick of his life, performed by him. By the way, Eddie Griffin ("The Walking Dead" and that new flick with Orlando Jones [the Sprite commercial guy and "Magnolia"]) was recently hand-picked by Richard Pryor to do a new full-length feature film of Richard Pryor's life...

"S.F.W." was the first flick I remember seeing Stephen Dorff in after he was a child star...my favorite performances rom him are definitely "BackBeat", "City Of Industry" "Blade" & "Cecil B. Demented"...

I thought DiCaprio was good in "The Basketball Diaries" and really love it for introducing P.T. Anderson to the talent that is Mark Wahlberg...P.T. Said that "The Basketball Diaries" and "FEAR" proved to him that Mark could act...

"Permanent Midnight" is great for me cause I dug "Alf" as a kid and has great performances all around...including another solid bit part from Owen Wilson...

"SLC PUNK!" is such a great film...the best ever acid trip filmed ever except for the New Orleans graveyard sequence in "Easy Rider". Lillard is another talented actor who gets wrangled into playing the same "hyper" role...think "The Curve" which I personally dug and has some cool film references like the "Russian Roulette" scene in "The Deer Hunter"...

"My Life As A Dog" is the first foreign film I remember seeing and liking (ok..the second...the first was "The Red Balloon"). It is pretty much a perfect retelling of my life, my mother's death, puberty, etc...

thanks for the input...

It's a brilliant drama with great performances. It's sad and very honest.

By the way, I do have balls, most guys wouldn't have the balls to even list it, like you!!!!!!

Thanks for the explanation, Brock.

#181 SCHOOL DAZE--Is my favorite Spike Lee Joint. Sad, but true (Unless you are talking about a different flick, which is quite possible.).

#420 THE LOVER--I have the book from Marguerite Duras (Unless again you are talking about another movie. Is this the movie about the French girl and the Chinese Businessman?).

Ever see a flick with Stephen Dorff called ENTROPY? It's about this young director (he directs videos for U2--or something along those lines) who scores a job shooting a flick in New York where he meets a girl. I don't know why this flick comes to mind. . .

As they say in "Lock, Stock & Two Smoking Barrels" (8.5/10)..."Chill Win...ston." No need to get pissed off about a mediocre mainstream flick that cashed in on the notoriety of the relationship between the stars..."Bounce" (6/10)

Raena..."School Daze" (7.5/10) was definitely the Spike Lee Joint about the black college experience. It does get mixed up with the less ideal flick starring Ben Affleck titled "Glory Daze" (5/10) sometimes. Spike Lee really did a great job portraying the cliches that form in college surrounding...ex: fratboys, serious students, slackers, etc...I like to think of it as a predecessor to films like John Singleton's "Higher Learning" (6.5/10) and an important step in Spike Lee's convaluted career...

"The Lover" (9/10)...I've never read the book, but I have fallen in love with the amazing cinematography and story in the film, I will have to check out the book. It is indeed about the chinese businessman and the young french girl...If memory serves me correct, the chinese businessman is played by Tony Leung (I remember he was in John Woo's Hong-Kong gangster epic "A Better Tomorrow" (7/10) and the first film from the director of the recent flick "The Emperor & The Assassin" (8/10), I mean, he was in "Farewell My Concubine" (9/10)...of course my memory is not so great these days). The young French girl is a vision of beauty and the story of her loss of innocence reminds me of the Joan Chen movie "Xiu Xiu: The Sent Down Girl" (9.5/10), where the lead female character becomes disillusioned after breaking the mythical barrier between romance and sex, meaning simply that she learns that sex is just sex, not love... Very sad and very beautiful...

I have seen "Entropy" at my local video store a few times (the box is blue with Stephen Dorff sitting in a director's chair), but sometimes those boxes just look cheap if you catch my drift, like it was a straight-to-video release or something (after buying videos and browsing shops for years, I can usually tell the difference). I would be interested to know if it is any good, since I dig Dorff and didn't give it a chance yet.

Thanks for asking me about some of my favorites, it brings back lots of memories and makes me want to dig back through my movie-closet for some repeat viewings. I am willing to go into great detail about any one of the flicks on my list...if anyone gives a damn...

I didn't think that Bounce was a chick flick at all. Saying that Bounce is a chick flick is like saying What Women Want is a chick flick which it is not.

And saying "So Fuck You" is very very mature now. I may only be 18 but at least I'm mature enough not to curse at someone.

Bounce isn't even a romance, it's more of a drama if anything. It may have romantic elements but it is by no means a chick flick in my opinion. A chick is like Fried Green Tomatoes.

Seriously, it's ok to like tell me to mess off which is well immature to say the least but to state to me "So fuck You" is just very very well I'll be blunt stupid.

I don't know if "What Women Want" or "Bounce" are technically "chick flicks", but I would have to be really P-whipped or castrated to be dragged to either one...

"Fried Green Tomatoes" on the other hand is a lesbian chick flick...just like "If These Walls Could Talk 2"...

FYI,

If you take the average length of a movie - around 2 hours - and you watched 2 movies a day (so 4 hours a day) - it would take you almost 7 years to watch 5000 films.

I have been known to watch up to eight films a day on free days (weekends, holidays, etc...) Also I have been watching films since I was a child and I am 26 years old. Not to mention that I spent 1998 doing nothing but living off of my savings and investments and watching films all day, no work, no nothing...except a marriage, a kid, and a divorce...I promise you, that I love films and have seen them all. I still haven't completed my Top 5000 anywho...I'm only to # 2,857...it's taking a while because I forget the ones I already put on and have to go through the list to make sure I don't put the same one on twice...

#399: The Shawshank Redemption

Now I understand the way you did the list, but come on. This movie, an I think many if not most would agree, belongs AT LEAST in the top 100, if not the top 50 or top 25. No grudges or anything, because I couldn't make a list like that of people I know(which is a lot). You know your movie shit, which has never been in dispute, and I know that you have a lot of time on your hands, so how about going back over the list to make some revisions, considering how you keep saying it was just the order they came to you. Great list, otherwise(except for Magnolia).

I appreciate the input retard...I will definitely go back and try to make some sense of the numbering when I get a chance...although, I still don't think I would put "The Shawshank Redemption" in my Top 100 let alone Top 50 or 25...I truly don't believe, in my opinion...and this is MY Top 500 list, that it deserves to be one of the top 100 films of the past 100 years...no way...still, I liked it and I appreciate that you think so highly of it. Thanks for the suggestion anyway bra...

Ideal discount dude -

BLISS, with Craig Shaeffer, Terrence Stamp & Sheryl Lee? If so, good for you, as this film's subject matter is superb, but meant for a selective audience. Though the film is a bit one-dimensioinal at times, and elliptical, it's impressive handling of difficult, marginalized content overrides it's defects.

Will -

Uh oh, I foresee another sparring match... in the near future... in your head... the next time you try and formulate a thought... "in this corner we have the brain-cell in red shorts"... in this corner is the one remaining brain-cell in blue shorts."

BOUNCE wasn't very good by my standards, but if you got your two brain-cells to shut the fuck up for a second, and put them to good use, you would have taken the intelligence to read the complete list, and find that his other selections were smart, and well-chosen.

Get it together

Jon Lap, Yes that is the Bliss I listed. It was a very engrossing and at times disturbing film. Terence Stamp was great as always and Craig Sheffer and Sheryl Lee's performance's were surprisingly very good.

Just wanted you all to know that Will has been given a warning for his FUCK YOU comment and that I appreciate the rest of you (at least MOST of you!) NOT stooping down to that level in order to make your points.

I have two simple rules on this board and I think that one of the reasons why this all works so well, is because pretty much ALL of the schmoes respect one another and know how to keep things on a mature and diplomatic level.

Special tip of the hat goes out to Ideal for respecting the board, rather than lowering himself to another's level.

"Gossip"...was a beautifully photographed film about excess drinking...pretty much. The soundtrack was great and there never was a shortage of liquor...Norman Reedus was fantastic and is a favorite of mine as of late. The rest of the cast including Joshua Jackson was sufficient if not competent. I only dig it because of the superficial brilliance...

"Happy, Texas"...I have one major reason I love this film...Steve Zahn. He is hilarious as Wayne Wayne Wayne Jr...a redneck sociopath who is dumber than a sack of wet hammers...Jeremy Northam makes a good leading man and William H. Macy as the gay sheriff is once again outstanding, proving what a great actor he is...The plot was a little strange but fun nonetheless...it was definitely a feel good flick...

Hey Caleb... thanks for mentioning the great 1986 film "The Boys Next Door"...it has been a favorite of mine since high school. I bet you didn't know that it was written by James Wong (director of "Final Destination") and Glen Morgan (co-writer of "Final Destination")...they sure made it all right. Hell, even the director of "The Boys Next Door" (Penelope Spheeris) went on to direct some nominal successes like "Wayne's World", "The Beverly Hillbillies", "The Little rascals" & "Black Sheep". I really like this film and think that Charlie Sheen and Maxwell Caulfield had some good performances overall...
