Layne Stanley blows them all away, IMO.
I'd go in this order: 1. Layne Stanley of Alice In Chains 2. Chris Cornell of Soundgarden 3. Dax Riggs of Acid Bath (Some of their stuff can be called grunge) 4. Phil Anselmo of Down (Ditto) 5. Eddie Vedder of Pearl Jam 6. Kurt Cobain of Nirvana 7. Mark Arm of Mudhoney 8. Mark Lanegan of Screaming Trees 9. Scott Weiland of STP (Stole too much from Vedder's voice) 10. Buzz Osbourne of The Melvins |

I dont think anything Phil Anselmo has ever done can be called grunge but what the fuck do I know.
Id give the call to Kurt, only because he was in the band that exploded the catagory. Cornell was amazing as was Stanley/Cantrell. Vedder lost me with his whole "against the world" crap he pulled. Once they fought Ticketmaster and didnt tour I was off the band wagon, didnt help that the next album was boring...but damn they had some energy at the start...their unplugged performance is amazing still. Porch is a great fn song. |

Down is southern-fried rock/metal. I don't hear any grunge on NOLA or Down II. And who the fuck is Layne Stanley????? It's Staley, people. Staley.
Sorry. I'm an AIC enthusiast, and I regard them as the best grunge outfit, bar none. In spite of this, Cornell is my favorite grunge vocalist. In his prime, he couldn't be touched. He hasn't made an impression on me since the underrated Euphoria Morning, though. Listen to Temple of the Dog and then listen to Audioslave. The gross downshift in his range is staggering. |

My top three...
1. Mark Lanegan - possesses one of the greatest rock'n'roll growls ever 2. Kurt Cobain - of course 3. J. Mascis - unconventional to say the least...but I absolutely love his lazy way with a melody |

Easily my favorite is Chris Cornell. Soundgarden was incredible.
1. Chris Cornell, Soundgarden, Temple Of The Dog, Audioslave 2. Scott Weiland, Stone Temple Pilots, Velvet Revolver (I love Interstate Love Song) 3. Eddie Vedder, Pearl Jam, Temple Of The Dog (Black is a real showcase of Vedder's talent, but Dissident is good too. Nothing Pearl Jam has done in the last ten years merits praise to me. It ended after Vitalogy.) 4. Layne Staley/Jerry Cantrell, Alice In Chains 5. Kurt Cobain, Nirvana 6. Dave Grohl, Foo Fighters, Nirvana 7. Daniel Johns, Silverchair (Laugh all you want...Silverchair kicked ass from about the time they forced their way out of the womb, so they make the list.) 8. Mark Lanegan, Screaming Trees 9. Anthony Keidis, The Red Hot Chili Peppers 10. Billy Corgan, Smashing Pumpkins (It could be argued they aren't grunge, but they really don't fit into one category.) I love how some of you have mention the Temple of the Dog album. Chris Cornell and Eddie Vetter on vocals for the song "Hunger Strike" is amazing.

Everyones gotta love Eddie vedder
1 Vedder (he is the pinacle of grunge singers, my 3rd fav singer of all time, under Mercury and possibly Jim Morrison, anyone listen to Black or Release and then get back to me) 2. Cornell (I love Soundgarden, I do digress, that Audioslave is pretty damn good, I'd buy there CD if I had money.) 3. Cobain (although his band, Nirvana is my 2nd favorite band of all time, cornell and Vedder blew his ass outta the water) 4. Staley (never listened to much Alice in Chains, but the name is cool and they have a few great songs, I'm gonna listen to them more.) Temple of The Dog rules. |

The singer from Audioslave is pretty good, but I'll have to go with Kurt Cobain and Gavin Rossdale.

Kurt Cobain is my favorite, followed by Eddie Vedder and Lane Staley. I'm entirly too sure what is considered grunge, I had always thought it was plad shirts and cut off pants, Doc Martins and chains hanging from your wallet. Well fashion at least.
