99% chance it will just be the same previous releases with a slip case around it, so might as well pick it up since its a nice discount compared to getting them individually

Bottle Rocket

Is Wes Anderson making it a point to get ALL his films released by Criterion -- past, present and future?

I've pretty much been waiting to hear this Bottle Rocket Criterion news since I first saw it after The Royal Tenenbaums came out 6 years ago.

Apparently getting a release next year on Criterion will Jean-Jacques Beineix's Diva (1981). To me that is GREAT news. One of my favorite films. Very stylish, at times more style than substance, but its amazing, regardless

I believe they also had it in their laserdisc catalog too. Didn't know that until after I'd seen the film a couple years back. But yeah, definitely check it out if it comes out quickly.

It's an interesting movie. Felt like Jean Pierre Jeunet film toned down on the style and focused more on the bizarre characters (including Jeunet regular Dominique Pinon in a small role).

It's worth a look.

Ah, I still haven't looked it up on IMDB but it sounds promising. I think I'm going to do that now.

It's Jean-Jacques Beineix . But yeah, Pinon is indeed a Jeunet regular

I'm in the midst of cleaning up my DVD collection, so I put all my Criterion and Eclipse titles together for you to see:

That last one is 4 x Agnes Varda.

These aren't on the Coming Soon page yet, though, for whatever reason.

Well, a couple of titles have gone out of print so I managed to get a couple more to sell. Others I didn't realize I had doubles until I organized all my Criterions...

That's pretty awesome. Though I've only heard of three of those, and seen none. Does anyone know if they're any good/worth buying?

It's Kurosawa. Anything by that guy is worth it.

Probably true. But still, I'd like to have some idea of what they're like or how good they are before getting it, except for a few which I'm definitely interested in (most notably The Idiot). But yeah, it is Kurosawa, so it'll probably be worth it.

I own both The Idiot and Scandal on Region 2 Masters of Cinema....good stuff. I Live In Fear has been long speculated to be released as a Criterion, I haven't seen it, but its one I've been waiting for a while. While I haven't seen the other two either, they may generally be considered "minor works" but still 5 unreleased Region 1 Kurosawa Films in one-set for a reasonable price is good news.

Ah, thanks. That's helpful. And yeah, it's still exciting news regardless.

From the new newsletter. I haven't seen the film, but people seem to believe its a hint for Ang Lee's THE ICE STORM.

I love the Ice Storm and that's what I thought it was (I posted my excitement 2 times on dvdtalk lol). I mean, it just HAS to be the Ice Storm, unless there's a great film with a key party that I don't know about.

And Sam, color me surprised. The Ice Storm is amazing. Be sure to get it when Criterion releases it (and if).

It IS The Ice Storm

Also, The Last Emperor is tentatively scheduled for February.

Yay, thanks Mister Christian. That's great news.

Also great news on the Last Emperor.

You are so helpful.

Do you know if Pierrot Le Fou is coming out in February? Or Last Year in Marienbad? Any word on those?

-- On a side note, somone over at dvdtalk brought up that it's very likely Darjeeling will be a Criterion because of the Ice Storm on Criterion (newer Fox film?). That's an interesting thought...even if it doesn't have too much logic behind it.

Don't know of any other titles for February right now...

I wouldn't dismiss a Darjeeling release as all of Anderson's films have the Criterion treatment. Bottle Rocket is coming (think in Feb actually) - maybe an Anderson box set is on the horizon.

Thanks anyway.

And yeah, I figured Darjeeling would get one, but it's relation to The Ice Storm is still uncertain in my mind at this point. lol

An Anderson box would be pretty cool...even if I'm not exactly one to be excited over it.

I'd much prefer a PT Anderson box, or a Sam Mendes box of Criterion re-releases. That'd be great.

OUT OF PRINT NOTICES:

So I read at a couple other boards that Variety Lights, Port of Shadows, Le Corbeau, and Quai des orfevres have all now gone out of print. It has been confirmed now on the Criterion website as well (ex. http://www.criterion.com/asp/release.asp?id=245)

Luckily, I own all four already, but just a heads up

the only one that looks like it could at least have some re-release potential is Variety Lights, but I also doubt that I would be re-released. If I were you, and assuming that they will remain OOP, I would probably just go out and pick them up/order them while they are still available just in case.

All right, thanks Sam.

100 bucks is a lot though, I don't know. There's other stuff I really want right now. Hmm.
Maybe I'll just rent them and get them in like 10 years when they come out again (if, lol).
I haven't seen three of them -- and Variety Lights isn't that good.
Plus I'm not a die hard criterion collector. So, rationality tells me not to blow a hundred.
