I got the $9.99 titles from Amazon, made sure I had three I wanted for the free shipping. THEN I wrote down other titles I was interested in and went to a nearby hole-in-the-wall store trying to get rid of HD DVD titles. For real cheap. The Amazon flicks were sold out at the store.
It's awesome, since I have a HD DVD/Blu-Ray CD-ROM drive and can do DVI to HDMI on my 46" TV. Or, I can "break down" and get a XB360 external drive for $30, which I'm gonna do to be less lazy.
So in the end, I've still saved some dough. Plus, the HD DVD releases are the same as the Blu-Ray counterparts for much less money, with THE THING having more extras actually. Also, a few aren't even on BD yet, but I have them in HD format
right now which will just be ported to BD the same way anyway. But at a higher price.
Last but not least, yes HD DVD is a dead format, but it's not like the movies will look/sound any better or worse than BD, and they can be ripped onto a BD disc in a couple/few years when drives and discs are real cheap.
Win/win/win!
