Any LA Residents in Here?

Hey whats up... i was just wondering if any schmoe lives out in LA right now.. i am about to move out there by the end of the year, and was just wondering if anyone can give me some good pointers about the good areas to get an apartment, where rent may be cheapest.. all that good stuff!

Also if anyone knows anything about Second City or Groundlings out there, id be interested in all of that.. as i plan on doing that (was going to move to Chicago to do Second City out there, but figured my degree (in film) would best be served in LA!

I live in the San Fernando Valley, which is just north (over the hill) of LA (LA County). Do you have a job? It is best to live nearest where you work. Traffic is a bitch. What are your interests there? Do you want to be near the Hollywood club or movie scene? Magic Mountain? Beach? Desert? Skiing? Farms? Are you living alone or with a wife and family?

Give me some info and I will tell you what I know and guide you. LA County is huge. Just south and east is Orange County. West is Ventura county.

If you want to do comedy, Hollywood be the place you want to hang out. Pauly Shore's place is there.

I live in LA County around the San Gabriel Valley. I live more in a suburb than the actual city of LA, but I'm 10 mins out of downtown LA.

To answer your question...it really depends. What you may not realize is how huge LA County really is. Without traffic, it would take you an hour and a half to go from one end of LA County to another through the 10 frwy. With traffic....it'd be a good 2.5 hrs plus.

So where you choose to live should be around where it is that you work and what it is that you want to do (professionally and socially). You will have to decide what you feel is a reasonable commute and you have to decide your budget.

Hopefully you have a reliable car, because everything in los angeles is spread out. My cousin in the film industry (she's a small-time actress looking to break in) chooses to live around the West Hollywood area so that she has convenient access to auditions.

Thing is, the bus / rail system is a pretty dependable way to get around out here, and if you're not living somewhere that's too far flung from everything (i.e. Orange Co.) than you're pretty close to everything.

For example, I live close to Universal City, and Hollywood and Highland is one Metrorail stop away. In the beginning I lived out here for 6 months with no car, granted I was working in my neighborhood. I actually don't recommend not having a car.

The San Fernando Valley is an okay place to live--it's spread out. It offers virtually nothing in the way of night life but it's close enough to everywhere. I guess another drawback is that this area traps all of the heat here in the basin in the summer.

Sounds like Hollywood is your best bet if you want to be close to the comedy though--expect to have to live with roommates if you're coming out alone.
