Steve Martin & Alec Baldwin to Co-Host Academy Awards this year

AMPAS press release:

Beverly Hills, CA—Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin will serve as co-hosts of the 82nd Academy Awards®, Oscar telecast producers Bill Mechanic and Adam Shankman announced today.
We think the team of Steve and Alec are the perfect pair of hosts for the Oscars,” said Shankman and Mechanic. “Steve will bring the experience of having hosted the show in the past and Alec will be a completely fresh personality for this event.”
“I am happy to co-host the Oscars with my enemy Alec Baldwin,” said Martin.
“I don’t play the banjo but I’m thrilled to be hosting the Oscars – it’s the opportunity of a lifetime,” said Baldwin.
Martin hosted the 73rd and 75th Academy Awards shows, earning an Emmy nomination for the first stint. He has also served as a presenter on the show several times, most recently at the ceremony in February when he appeared with Tina Fey. He is currently touring with the bluegrass band Steep Canyon Rangers in support of his latest album “The Crow: New Songs for the Five String Banjo.” In 1977 and 1978 Martin won Grammys for Best Comedy Recording. He earned a third Grammy in 2001 in the Best Country Instrumental Performance category. In 2007 Martin earned a Kennedy Center Honor.

Baldwin was nominated for an Academy Award in 2003 for his supporting role in “The Cooler.” That year also marked his most recent appearance as a presenter on the show. Baldwin currently stars as Jack Donaghy on the comedy “30 Rock,” a role for which he has won two Emmys (in 2008 and 2009). Baldwin earned a Tony nomination in 1992 for his performance in “A Streetcar Named Desire.”

Academy Awards for outstanding film achievements of 2009 will be presented on Sunday, March 7, 2010, at the Kodak Theatre at Hollywood & Highland Center®, and televised live by the ABC Television Network. The Oscar presentation also will be televised live in more than 200 countries worldwide.

I like that - Baldwin is a fantastic stage and comedy actor. Martin's done it before. It's also funny that they seem to be playing off their "feud" that was started on SNL when competing for the hosting record. I smell sketched galore.

Aw that Stiller RDJ combo would have made for a hilarious Oscars!

I'm happy with the choice they've made though, Steve Martin is obviously good at this kind of stuff and I'm confident that Baldwin will complement him well, I look forward to the ceremony.

It's funny, but I suggested that Alec Baldwin would be a perfect Oscar host on another thread and you all thought I was crazy in addition to calling Baldwin an asshole. I guess they see what I see.

Great choices. Both very talented, very funny, they have a good repartee (SNL, 30 Rock). Infinitely better than Hugh Jackman or another song and dance man.

I did too? Everyone? See, right here is the bane of a drunken argument I got into with a buddy, where I was insisting there was a difference between y'all and you all. "Y'all be judging me." gets a more apt point across than "You all are judging me." One demands figurativeness and the other implies accuracy. It's the damn language man. I would have been a star, but these damn insights into conventions of casual conversation kept making the lines too deep and wide. Just like my johnson. hahahahaha.

Martin has already proven himself a great oscars host. This'll be his third time. Plus, him with Baldwin? I predict comedy gold!

really?

he's brilliant...

I wouldn't care if he hosted the entire thing as Leonardo Leonardo.

Anyway, he and Martin are dripping with chemistry (see: the Martin-hosted SNL when they try to kill each other)

All of a sudden I am happy Logan dropped out.

Im most excited for Alec Baldwin. 30 Rock's really given his career a much-needed boost on top of it all. I think this news sounds very awesome.

Excellent choices. I know it's been done before but not recently, so I think it's a fresh approach to have two co-hosts instead of one - very often co-presenters for some of the awards are more entertaining than just the one host, so having two people play off one another for the entire night - and two funny and seasoned individuals such as these at that - will certainly serve up the entertainment. And I mean, it's not like I wouldn't watch the Oscars anyway, but this is just another reason that will make them worthwhile.
