![]() Le Donk and Scor-zay-zee Nothing much to say. It's just a simple fun mockumentary. It's not hilarious but it's still pretty enjoyable and I thought Paddy Considine was very entertaining. Scor-zay-zee is a great rap artist and seemed very natural in the movie. He's shy but it compliments Le Donk's over the top nature. I liked the flow of the movie and I'm really glad Shane Meadows kept it short. It was the perfect length and it didn't overstay its welcome. The subplot with Le Donk's ex-girlfriend having their kid was a nice addition. 7/10 |

The Taking Of Pelham 1 2 3
![]() A solid thriller that could've been a great one alongside Joseph Sargent's '74 original had Tony Scott had the former director's patience in letting the hostage situation build at a slower pace to milk the tension of the looming deadline. The stakes are explained and it's apparent that something bad will happen to SOMEONE when the clock ticks down to zero, so what's Scott's rush to get to the payoff? Maybe he didn't trust the average movie-goer's attention span, but whatever the case, he doesn't seem to want to let us properly savor the build-up, focusing on too many side characters whose dialogue seems to be catered to allowing the slower folks in the audience the benefit of catching up on important information every other second. It's only when Denzel and Travolta are pinging and ponging back and forth over the radio when the movie finds its groove to let it ride smoothly to an entertaining - if wholly predictable - final act. -> 7/10 |

In all honesty, I don't see the reasoning in throwing away money to see a movie that you already know you're not going to like. This is why I haven't bothered to see the new Saw VI despite positive reviews from the fanbase. I'm just tired of those films. However, hey, if you've got the spare change and time, proceed by all means. I'll wait unti it hits DVD and I can pick it up for as a $1 rental.

Vampyr (Carl Theodor Dreyer, 1932)
![]() Very creepy and atmospheric. Brilliantly directed by Dreyer and has some beautiful images but I think it kind of lost steam/effect within the last 20 minutes. Great stuff though. 7/10 |

9 - 9/10
Saw 9 on screen 9 and give it 9. I've loved the short it's based since I first came across it a few years ago and wasn't sure how it would translate into feature film form but I wasn't disappointed. Nicely animated with some good voice work and an engaing plot, I was slightly worried they'd have a whole love interest side plot when the "female" one appeared but it was nice to see they didn't go that way. Thoroughly enjoyed it. |

![]() Astro Boy(2009)-6/10...somewhat fun and fast-paced animated film based on the popular Japanese manga cartoon about a futuristic city, where a young robot boy discovers he's a hero. After humans have over-polluted the Earth a floating paradise called Metro city is created, where robots are created to live and work for them in a seemingly harmonious place. Nic Cage voices Doctor Tenma, a genius at robotics and the head of the ministry of science. After a terrible accident kills his young son Toby, he trys to replace him with a robotoc replica. This film has an odd tone to it, its all based on a rather dark and disturbing premise. Sure it has some of the zany physical gags and the obligetory cutesy sidekick that you find in almost every animated kids film these days, but it also explores some rather adult themes and ideas...there is even a hint of Oliver Tiwst in there. The animation is bright and colorful and visually there are some nice moments. Overall its not a great film, but it has more to offer than most of the standard animation that's force-fed as good entertainment for the kids. Voice cast includes Freddie Highmore, Kristen Bell, Charlize Theron, Donald Sutherland, Samuel L. Jackson, Eugene Levy, Bill Nighy and Nathan Lane. |

The Sensation Of Sight
![]() So incurably boring that the more meaningful elements of the script and the impassioned performances from most of the well-rounded cast are lost in the haze of mind-numbing pretension that permeates the entire film. It's a shame, too, because David Strathairn really brings his top chops to the role of haunted English teacher turned travelling encyclopedia salesman Finn and his quest to find hope and meaning in a world of despair. It actually sounds like a much better story than the one I eventually ended up seeing on the screen, but it definitely feels like one of those densely layered dramas that requires at least two viewings before it can be fully appreciated. I'll keep my mind open in the future, because there's plenty going on in the nuances of the performances that I have no doubt would play more smoothly the second time around, but right now I'm not feeling the overall profundity that the filmmakers seemed so desperate to communicate. -> 5/10 |

Surveillance - ***
Pretty good thriller even though I saw the twist coming a mile away. It's nice to see a bunch of talented has-beens in this movie. People like Bill Pullman, Julia Ormand, French Stewart, Michael Ironside, ect. Pullman and Ormand are especially good here and I've always been a big fan of them both. Have to say though, the ending left me feeling a little empty. When it was initially over, I wasn't sure if I liked the movie. But after sitting on it, I've reached the conclusion that I did like it despite it's flaws. Though the acting shift by a couple of actors whose names I won't say so I don't spoil the twist, is a bit jarring. It makes sense, but it DID feel jarring at first. I also saw the first 40 minutes of Black Dynamite. I won't give it a rating until I finish it, but thus far, I'm not a fan. I like the music but I only find it to be intermittently amusing. It's not nearly as much fun as the trailer suggested. I think the reason being is that this movie would have worked better as a short film or skit. The material is simply too thin for a feature length movie. |

The Lives of Others (Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck, 2006)
![]() Really good film. I always like the matter-of-fact direction you seem get with German films that makes them seem more real and intimate. I didn't really like the dramatic way the story turned out eventually and was hoping for a better ending, but up until then it was totally intriguing and actually quite upsetting, the latter most likely thanks to the brilliant performance from Ulrich Muhe (RIP), aided by a great supporting cast. 8/10 |

![]() I shouldve known that after watching Ultimatum I was going to go back and watch the first two. A great opening to the franchise but I actually find the sequels better. 8/10 ![]() Like I said I actually think the sequels are an improvement from the first which is a rarity. The shaky cam doesnt even bother me in these movies. 9/10 |

Command Performance (Dolph lundgren) = Very Entertaining,by the numbers cheesefest. If action is your formula, espicially vintage, check it.
The Tournament (Kelly Hu,Ving Rhames) = AWESOME. Why didn't this go to theaters? Highly recommended. Mutant Chronicles (Thomas Jane,Ron Perlman) = Another solid cheesefest. I love futuristic sci-fi flicks, call me a sucker. 3 for 3 on renting at Blockbuster. Heres hoping my luck continues. |

Transformers: Revenge Of The Fallen
![]() Yeah, I know, the critical inclination is to follow the herd and completely shit all over it and move on, but the fact is I knew what I was getting and what kind of expectations to have (specifically - "low"), and voluntarily went from there. As such, it wasn't all bad using that criteria, and there are a few things I actually really liked about it. The score is again phenomenal blood-pumping awesomeness (Jablonsky might just be second only to Hans Zimmer at this point for scoring big budget action pics), the final battle sequences in Egypt are well done considering all the mind/endless ones preceding it, and the movie still strangely works well when it's not blowing shit up and doing its effectively puerile comedy shtick, namely the scenes with Sam and his parents and any time John Turturro is onscreen. Basically, it knows what it is and flaunts it, and that kind of honesty should count for something, however bloated and flagrantly moronic it can be. -> 6/10 |
