anyone know how yesterday went? i have a slight feeling that xmas carol (all right movie, BTW.) may tank. when i saw it last night, there was NO ONE there. either people are tired of jim and his schtick, zemickis' MOCAP b.s, christmas movies being released so early or they are holding off for now until later in the month. with a new "end of the world" movie and another twilight on the way, i don't blame them.

Apparently A Christmas Carol made around $10 million Friday. Not bad, but not as good as some were expecting. A lot will depend on how it increases on Saturday. And also, The Polar Express opened on the same weekend 5 years ago to a disappointing $23 million, only to go on to gross $180 million by the end of its run. So even if the numbers are a bit lower than expected, it should have some strong holds as we get closer and closer to Christmas.
I, or someone else, will post some more concrete estimates later. |

thanks, bourne. i actually just got a fax moments ago at my office from some analysts upstate. a christmas carol bagged number one with 33 mil. not bad, but not great either. this is it took a 40% drop from last week and is at 60 mil nationwide since last wednesday. men who look at goats did swell with 13 mil in 3rd place. box and fourth kind rounded out the top 5 and did what everyone thought they would do. so all in all, the holiday season is off to a good start.

Weekend Estimates
1. A Christmas Carol- $31 million 2. Michael Jackson's This Is It- $14 million 3. The Men Who Stare at Goats- $13.4 million 4. The Fourth Kind- $12.6 million 5. Paranormal Activity- $8.6 million 6. The Box- $7.9 million 7. Couples Retreat- $6.5 million 8. Law Abiding Citizen- $6.2 million 9. Where the Wild Things Are- $4.3 million 10. Astro Boy- $2.6 million A bit disappointing for A Christmas Carol. It's going to have to have some strong legs, which is certainly possible. This Is It held up well. The Men Who Stare at Goats managed a decent opening. The Fourth Kind did alright. Paranormal Activity is still doing well. The Box did pretty poorly. Precious also made $1.8 million in 18 theatres. That's a massive $100,000 PTA. Last edited by Bourne101; 11-08-2009 at 03:00 PM.. |

2012 did $23.7 Million on Friday... ahead of expectations
bad ass! Cuz that flick is super bad ass, and is a big screen movie like none other! here is the article from The Wrap.com Mayhem master Roland Emmerich’s latest disaster piece “2012” opened to $23.7 million at the domestic box office Friday, putting it on pace for a $60 million weekend that would exceed pre-release projections. Finishing in second place Friday, Disney’s Robert Zemeckis 3D Charles Dickens adaptation of “A Christmas Carol” dropped 38 percent from its premiere a week prior with $5.5 million. Playing in only 174 venues, meanwhile, Lionsgate awards hopeful “Precious: Based on the Novel ‘Push’ By Sapphire” continued to pack houses, generating $1.9 million Friday. As for “2012,” it’s an auspicious start for a $200 million apocalyptic-themed film, which stars John Cusack, Amanda Peet and Woody Harrelson. Opening simultaneously in 107 foreign territories, the action-packed, easily translatable movie is expected to do what Emmerich offerings do best – play big abroad. Emmerich’s 2004 disaster movie, “The Day After Tomorrow,” for example, earned 66 percent of its $544.3 million global box-office haul in international ticket sales. It opened to $68.7 million on a Memorial Day weekend. Sony reported Friday that "2012" has already gotten off to a hot start in France, where it enjoyed the second biggest non-sequel opening. With global prints and advertising costs exceeding $100 million, it will probably need to match or exceed "Day After Tomorrow's" performance to be considered profitable. For its part, “A Christmas Carol” also has a comparable model from 2004 that foretells decent things. Director Zemeckis’ last holiday-themed motion-capture-animated film, “The Polar Express,” dropped 32 percent in its second week after an unspectacular $23.3 million early-November opening. However, with no additional play dates, the movie spiked 24 percent in its third week, to $19.4 million, as Thanksgiving drew near. After getting off to a soft $31.5 million start last weekend, Disney hopes “A Christmas Carol,” shot for $200 million, enjoys a similar arc. Here’s how the top 10 shaped up Friday at the box office: 2012 ($23.7 mil.) Disney’s A Christmas Carol ($5.5 mil.) The Men Who Stare at Goats ($2.0 mil.) Precious: Based on the Novel 'Push' By Sapphire ($1.9 mil.) The Fourth Kind ($1.8 mil.) Michael Jackson’s This Is It ($1.5 mil.) Paranormal Activity ($1.5 mil.) Couples Retreat ($1.4 mil.) Law Abiding Citizen ($1.3 mil.) The Box ($1.1 mil.) |

2012 did excellent, i never doubted it would, the marketing was spot on, and the trailers were intriguing. I'm not sure how well it will hold up, but since it did so well this weekend, it won't matter. It's doing great overseas also( i imagine the rest of the world loves to see the US get decimated in cgi fashion), looks like Emm has another hit on his hands.
Small drop for CC, that's in line with what past early Nov. Xmas themed films have done, it will hang around in the top 10 for a while. These type of films normally don't open with huge numbers but consistently add to their box office over a two month period. Precious is acting like PA, racking up some huge psa numbers. It's psa dropped since last weekend, but it expanded so that's expected. The more it expands the more it's psa will drop, although there may be some weekends when it increases from the previous one. It doesn't own the psa record, that one belongs to Dreamgirls(126,316), a film that went on to make about 100 mil, i don't know if Precious can do that, it's appeal may be deceptive because of it's limited release. |

yeah, but it won't make a dent over thanksgiving when it goes wide. it will be cool to watch but it will be overshadowed by the cgi kid fests planet 51 and xmas carol. princess and the frog will do very well hopefully at christmastime.

A few sites are reporting that New Moon took in $70-80 million for Friday (including midnights).
Which would destroy the previous record set last year by The Dark Knight. Opening weekend might be $130m + Jesus. H. Christ. |

Wow. That's pretty incredible. The sequel actually made more money in it's opening day than the first film did in it's opening weekend. That's amazing.
You know, even though I have no interest in this franchise whatsoever, I have to say I'm kind of glad that something is doing this well and giving the boxoffice some much needed excitement. Would I rather it be something that was better? Of course. But it's still nice to see hear about movies setting records and generating some real excitement and buzz. |

DK's one day and soon, it's weekend record is toast. Anyone that doesn't think it's a foregone conclusion at this point is a bit bonkers.
This is a pg 13 film, they almost always jump on Sat., or at least equal opening day numbers, so the fekkin turd will be at 140 plus by the end of Sat nite. We're probably looking at a 180 mil opening weekend now. I said in the past, every year records are being broken, looks like the streak is intact. I'm just glad i have Let the right One In to console me, because this Twilight claptrap is on a whole other level of disturbing now, those numbers can't be right .It kind of makes sense though, DK and Twilight both appeal to a large emocentric crowd. This makes my blood boil, i loathe this franchise, this isn't horror, it only pretends to have anything to do with the genre. Godfuckin awful |
