![]() A Christmas Carol - 7/10 Pretty good Christmas movie. I'll start with the negatives. This is NOT a kids film. The story is very dark, not relatable to young kids and features many creepy elements. But, because the film costs so much to make and must look like it would appeal to kids, there must be these little unnecessary jokes (the chipmunk voice) and prolonged action sequences to get kids to go see it. If the film got rid of the unnecessary jokes and the prolonged action sequences, this film would have been much sharper and tighter. That's the main problem with the film. On a lesser note, the motion capture thing is getting a bit old. Zemeckis needs to stop doing it. Sure, the film does look visually stunning and there are some really, really nice shots, but this film could have been so much cheaper and efficient to make had it just been a live-action film. Without the motion capture, the long-winded action sequences could have been removed. And though it doesn't really relate to the quality of the film itself, 3D needs to die. This film would have been better in 2D, straight up. The illusion that it is snowing in the theatre or that Jim Carrey is flying toward me just isn't interesting or exciting. Now, on to the positives, and there are quite a few. Jim Carrey is great as Scrooge. In fact, all of the actors do a great job. Visually, even with the motion capture, it looks magnificent. Very gorgeous scenery throughout. The story (minus the action sequences) is told very well. There are some truly great scenes here and I certainly connected with the film on a much higher emotional level than I expected. There are some pretty powerful scenes as well, especially the scene with Scrooge and Bell. The only thing about the story that was a tad disappointing is that we never get to see the family receive their turkey that Scrooge gives to them. If that scene had been there, the quality of the story would have elevated to an even higher level. So overall, the film is very well-made, acted and tells the classic story very well. Its only downfalls are the unnecessary additions to make the film appeal to kids and the fact that motion capture probably should not have been used. Solid film though, and it certainly got me in the Christmas spirit! |

Aliens (James Cameron, 1986)
Haven't seen this flick in many years and thoroughly enjoyed revisiting it. I think it may be a little dated as it's filled with lots of 80s cheese, but it's a shoot-em-up sci-fi flick so what's not to like? James Cameron puts the skills learned in Terminator to good use (so many similarities that I never realised) and crafts a film that never skimps on the excitement. Sigourney Weaver is damn brilliant as Ripley as well. Only flaw (though I can't totally blame her) is the child actor, who annoyed the hell out of me, mostly. 7/10 |

![]() 10/10 I love this movie. Every rewatch makes it better and better. The extended version is the only way to go. This is what movies are about. The Abyss has everything. A great cast who gives great performances, engaging characters, thrilling action, genuine tension, engaging story...and its probably Cameron's most visually impressive film. On a technical standpoint this film is flawless imo. Not to mention the "wave" ending in the extended version is mindblowing. Pure spectacle. |

![]() The Men Who Stare at Goats - 7/10 I haven't laughed that hard in a long time. This movie is fucking hilarious. Clooney, McGregor, Bridges and Spacey are all a hoot and all do a great job. The story is completely crazy. It's amazing that some of it is actually true. But as crazy and stupid as some of the stuff is, the film is very intelligently written, even if it is a tad unfocused at times. It's a breezy, hilarious, well-acted and intelligent comedy that flies by in no time. I definitely recommend it. |

![]() Westworld (Written & Directed by Micheal Crichton) Interesting premise. But it felt dragged out by a couple of ultimately uninteresting side-plots that wore out their length. It's essentially Jurassic Park (Also written by Crichton) but substituting human androids for dinosaurs. But not as tight or compelling. Points to Yul Brynner as a creepy, gunsliger/killer. 7/10 Last edited by drc5145; 11-10-2009 at 08:45 PM.. |

REQUIEM
Compelling film concerning the same real life possession case The Exorcism of Emily Rose is based one. Only this one doesn't sensationalist the situation, instead it handles the theological aspects from a psychological point of view. 8/10 |

Capsule reviews:
A PERFECT GETAWAY (2009) - 5/10 The twist is fairly obvious very quickly, but doing a quick rewatch of some early scenes of dialogue, I don't think it holds up too well and doesn't work in the double edged way Twohy intends. The meta, too, falls really flat. I did enjoy Timothy Olyphant and the energy in some of the final scenes. JENNIFER'S BODY (2009) - 4/10 I liked Juno and I thought Diablo Cody's script wasn't that distracting except for a couple of scenes. Here, it's very very distracting. I think the actors just can't pull it off. Scenes screech to a halt as Megan Fox struggles to deliver clunky one-liners. Plus, the movie is not all that interesting. TERMINATOR: SALVATION (2009) - 6/10 The main issue I have with this franchise is that it explores very little new territory and this film is quite derivative of classic sci-fi and action movies. It's still pretty solid and Sam Worthington is very good. And while the overall look of the film is dull, McG does a nice job directing some action sequences with long takes. MY SISTER'S KEEPER (2009) - 3/10 When the central character in a film is a young girl with terminal cancer, the least you hope for is some subtlety and a low-key approach. Instead, the melodrama and sentimentality is cranked up to 11 and everything about this film is so contrived and manipulative, that not a moment feels sincere. Despite the abundance of sad montages set to Sarah McLachlan type songs, I didn't shed a tear. I just felt appalled that the filmmakers could be this blatant and transparent. THE DAMNED UNITED (2009) - 8/10 Michael Sheen is scintillating in this movie and the script is just terrific. Very engaging and beautifully put together. It's funny though -- they took a legend like Brian Clough and made a movie about the 44 days when he was at the lowest point in his life. That takes balls. It sorta reminded me of Patton Oswalt's routine about the 'Einstein taking a dump' movie. BLACK DYNAMITE (2009) - 7/10 Hilarious sendup of bad blaxploitation movies that has a lot of affection for its source material and the look, music, dialogue, fight sequences and amateur filmmaking all add to the authentic feel and atmosphere. Sometimes it feels like there's not enough for a full-length movie, but then the plot starts coming together and there's more weight to it than most summer blockbusters. Kung-fu Nixon is killer. |

![]() Team America: World Police(2004)-6/10...completely silly, absolutely absurd, utterly wrong, but often hilarious animated film from the creators of South Park about ass-kicking American puppets saving the world from terrorists, Kim Jong Il and the Film Actors Guild(F.A.G.)..."Matt Damon!" |

Gomorra
![]() The Italian gangster film (and source novel) so authentic that it actually pissed off the largest criminal organization in Italy and forced the author into police protection. It took some a-spicy a-meat-a-balls to even make something like this, but the effort shows on the screen. There's a fatalistic hopelessness hanging over the piece that suggests no one, guilty and innocent alike, can escape or overcome the influence of the omnipotent syndicate, and every scene reflects that harsh reality. There's not a shred of glamour to be found in the depiction of the life the mafia members lead, either, several scenes of shocking violence literally shooting to shit the notion of a romanticized, tight-knit family of corrupt sophisticates over one of the bleakest two and a quarter hours of unrepentent gangland cruelty that I've seen since the brilliant City Of God and The Wire. If you're having a good day, by all means pack a lunch - this one will ruin the rest of it. -> 9/10 |

Last couple weeks:
$5 A Day - 8/10 Christopher Walken rules. The Vanishing ('88) - 8/10 I assume they changed the ending in the remake as I recall that ending differently. Good thriller. Michael Jackson's This Is It - 8/10 That would have been one hell of a show. Le Donk & Scof-zay-zee - 2/10 Shane Meadows should just give up. Julie & Julia - 8/10 Much more enjoyable than I thought it would be. The Open Road - 8/10 Timberlake might eventually become a decent actor. Christmas Town - 2/10 The Troll 2 of christmas movies. Funny People - 6/10 Overly long and not that funny. |

![]() Great film. Loved the characters. Loved the story. I wanted more. Lindsay Anderson really crafts a realistic world and then starts playing with it by giving it off-the-wall touches. I loved the cutting between the black and white and color scenes. It becomes more bold as it progresses, with the musical cues becoming louder and more prominent. This was the kind of film I needed to see to push me into writing a script I've been toying with for a few years now. 9/10 |
